Title: CZ 527 Varmint - Scope / Ring Combinations ? Without Bolt Handle Modification
Post by: 2320_Parker on April 30, 2013, 10:10:09 AM
I?m new to the forum and CZ rifles. I just purchased a CZ 527 Varmint walnut stock in .223.

Not to beat a dead horse but a have another scope outfitting question.

I will be mostly target shooting this gun and maybe a few trips to the field for groundhogs.  I figure my range work will be 200-300 yards.

I?m looking for scope / ring combinations that will work without bolt handle modification.  I would like to find the lowest mounting ring with the highest power scope.

Is it possible to find something that satisfies the requirement in a variable power scope up to 12X with a BDC reticle?

Thanks in advance.

Std CZ rings should work fine with a Weaver V16 or similar.

Thanks for the reply ZG47.

I was hoping for lower rings.

Got my eye on a Nikon P-223 4-12 X 40 setting on top of Warne medium ring.

Anyone have any experience with this combination?

The Millet high rings for CZ 527 are really high, probably to work with 50mm objectives. Bolt clearance should be OK with most scopes.

The Weaver V-Series are very good scopes made in Japan by OLW (Optical Light Works), and the V-16 which is 4-16x42mm AO scope and is a very good varmint scope and has a smaller ocular bell that works well with CZ supplied rings or Burris high rings. It is my scope on my CZ 527 .204 Ruger and has accounted for many prairie dogs the past 2 years. The objective is recessed enough that a lens hood is not necessary. Slightly over $300 and worth every penny.

The Burris 4.5-14x32 Timberline has 1/8" adjustments at 100 yards and can't be beat for the money if you want a compact scope. The lens coatings are equal to Leupold VX-3 or Burris Signature Select, and you can get one for under $300 if you shop around. This scope sits on my CZ 452 .22LR and it has very wide usefulness as a mountain rifle scope or air rifle scope as well. The AO adjusts down to about 20 feet, so it is what is known as a "bug blaster" in the air rifle camps. A GREAT scope to switch between an air rifle, rimfire, mountain or varmint rifle. Long eye relief means never any brow bashing even under heavy recoil.

Any of the OLW produced brands are excellent if the eyebell is on the smaller side. These are Bushnell Elite, Sightron and Vortex branded, besides Weaver V and T series. OLW probably makes a higher volume of good scopes than anybody in the world.

SWFA offers a fixed 10X tactical scope that gets rave reviews. Probably the best deal in an economical tactical style scope.

I needed to grind down both bolt handles on my 527s to use warne med rings.

I have a brand new set of Warne Mediums for sale. Wouldn't fit my Nikon P-223 4-12x.  :-\

Problem with ringmounts is that U.S. manufacturers/marketers tend to always classify them as if they are for full size centrefire receivers. The CZ527 receiver is basically the same size as a heavy duty rimfire receiver, i.e. CZ527 medium and std rimfire medium are a similar height to most centrefire high rings.

Once you understand the sizing issue it is much easier to deduce what will work (or not).

Finalized my 527 set-up and couldn't be happier.

Wound up with CZ mounts (came with the gun) and a Nikon Buckmaster BDC 6-18 SF.

I bought a clearanced Bolt Handle directly from CZ USA.

All is good - under 1 MOA at 100 yrd.  Will try some 200 yrd targets when the wind settles down.

Thanks for your help guys.

Good decision.  I like the Buckmaster scopes.  I only have about half a dozen of them. ;D

Newcomer with belated response, but perhaps useful for future reference.  Warne high rings with a Sightron 3-12x42mm scope is a great fit for my CZ 527 varmint 223, gray laminate stock. No modifications to bolt required. "Magic" with 69gr Sierra MK BTHP, 25.1 Varget, and CCI BR4 primers for those who reload.
