Title: Popular 9mm Bullet Lengths
Post by: 1SOW on March 15, 2014, 08:41:47 PM
Moderator Note
Gentlemen, we are still seeking 9mm bullet length data to add to this listing. The very first post has been edited to contain all the contributed suggestions on the follow-up pages. Post #1 has been reformatted for easier editing. A more "printer friendly" version can be found on page 5.

To calculate the bullet seating depth of a 9x19 Luger cartridge use this formula... [Bullet Length + 0.745] - Cartridge OAL

I've found knowing various bullet lengths useful in developing new loads by type (Plated/Jacketed), weight, nose shape and a known seating depth for that weight bullet.

If other Manufacturers, weights and types of of bullet are posted,  I'll try to add to this list----or not. :D

Guys,  do me a favor as formatting this is a PITA.  I'm clumsy with the computer at the best of times.
Provide your info , single spaced, "Weight"--number only (124), Nose type (RN), Length (.XXX)
EG.:  Berry's,
124 RN    .XXX"
130 FP     .XXX"

After I add your enties to the first post,  please double check them for accuracy.  The modify page doesn't always format the same when save is hit. ::)

Good stuff to have available.

Riptide,

Can you check your Berry's HP again?  I'm out of them now, but sure thought they were shorter than that.  I wonder if they were .590" instead of .690".

I'm gpoing from memory of 9 sample bullets,  and I believe you're correct.  They weren't near that long.

I just type and that doesn't leave any spare brain matter.  :-[ :D

Blue Bullet Coated
125 RN    .606"
147 FP     .665"

These had more bullet to bullet variation than I've seen before.   RN were .600 to .612.   FP were .662 to .670.   Nothing else I've checked had more than a .004" ES for 10 bullets.

That is a LOT of length variation.

My BBI 135 had a spread of .011.

Well, I find all this information about the blue bullets annoying, mostly because I ordered 500 each of those two Blue Bullets earlier today.    :P

You have this one listed already.    But I get the measurement a tad shorter.

BBI Coated
147 FP  .665   ES was .004" for 10 Bullets.    I think the mold for these is the same as the Blue Bullet 147s.    Push test in my CZ85 differed by .002"

Most likely due to the powdercoating on the bullet.  It doesn't get applied evenly every time.  IDescribe and I discussed this issue before with other types of coated bullets.

The bullet diameter should all be consistent, since they are sized after coating.

I'm buying as many different coated bullets as I can.   Here's some data I've compiled.   Push test is in my CZ85.   I won't use the Precision 147s as I have to load them too deep

Mr, 1SOW...

Painter,  I'll post any bullet lengths of interest to the forum members;  but I'm not smart about loading lead.  I suspect diameters and composition play a roll in determining seating depth.  I really DON't know if comparing lengths of an assortment of various brands, weights and diameters of lead bullets benefit our lead reloaders.  If it does,  I'll post them.   All I'm going to post is bullet length info..

I personally, am unlikely to be loading anything but jacketted and plated.  You "fully leaded, high octane" guys can choose yea or nay.  ;)

Brand new bullet.   Just out from SNS.

SNS Coated
125 RN  .583

Bullets had an ES of .005".   A little better than I've been seeing.   Push test was 1.1.   Most were a little over 1.11.   But one was 1.096 so I will load these at 1.085.

Comments ?  Ideas ?

So I pulled some bullets from rounds I made a month ago.  They are Xtreme 124gr FP.  I measured them and they are consistently 0.002" longer than new bullets  0.525".  I wonder if anyone experienced the same and if this normal.

I probably should clarify, these are from the same lot that I originally measured and submitted for this thread.  So 0.525" appears to the average length for new bullets. I then pulled a few bullets which can from the same lot and they measure 0.527"-0.528". So the pulled bullets elongated while in the case?  I could be making a mountain out of a mole hill but thought the community may have an explanation.

Thanks,
Ben

Is there also a difference in diameter between the new ones and the ones you pulled?
Title: Re: 9mm Bullet Lengths

I've found .002"  bullet length variations with several brands of bullets,  but not due to being reloaded.

If the bullet diameters are oversized and seated in thick cases,  the LEE FCD MIGHT be tight enough to squish the bullet longer if you use the FCD.   I do use it and why I mentioned it..
Other than these possibilities,  I would suspect coincidence inyour test for bullet lengths.

Not sure if you want to "trust" non cz forum users, but I found more lengths in this post.

http://www.thehighroad.org/archive/index.php/t-752422.html (http://www.thehighroad.org/archive/index.php/t-752422.html)

Extracted:

Sierra 125gr FMJ OAL= .574-.576, bearing surface(BS)= .290-.292 (Base to ogive length)
Hornady 125gr HAP OAL= .571-.573 bearing surface= .306-.309
Nosler 125gr JHP OAL= .543-.547 bearing surface= .324-.327
Sierra 125gr JHP OAL= .545-.548 bearing surface= .339-.341

Lengths are posted 6 from the bottom by RAT807.  I'm bringing this up because my Lyman's Manual contains lots of Sierra JHP and FMJ pistol load data and has made me a bit stir crazy not knowing their lengths to use as reference points.

Thanks for maintaining this thread. It had been invaluable for me.

benq, I started,  but members maintain this thread.  It can be useful for those building new-to-them loads.

Please just list the "Bullet Maker,Plated/Jacketted/Coated, Nose Type, Weight and the length(s)"   Same format as those posted now.  I'll then move your data to the cover page 1.
Bring forward from trusted sites those you want to see added. You do that 'leg-work'  and to simplify my entering them on the front page-.  ;)

0.561
0.565

Of the hand full of Berry's plated RN 115g, most measured :
0.555 to 0.556

Most of your variation in length comes at the nose, especially with coated bullets.

If you are using a seating die with an anvil that seats off the ogive, that variation in bullet length isn't going to mean anything ballistically.  Your OALs won't be super consistent, but your seating depth will be, and your standard deviations in velocity should be consistent as well, all else being equal.

On the other hand, if you're using an anvil that seats off the nose/meplat, it will result in consistent OALs, but inconsistent seating depths, which is going to increase your standard deviations on muzzle velocity.  Will those differences in velocity result in significant differences in performance at the shorter ranges common to pistol shooting?  Probably not.  But if you're looking to produce the most consistent ammo possible in terms of performance, or if you're chasing the power factor floor, you'd be better off seating off the ogive with such bullets (with any bullets, really).

IMHO, it's the manufacturing method that delivers the wide length tolerance. These bullets are plated in an agitated plating tank. The bullets are tumbling over and around, similar to cleaning cases in a vibratory tumbler, while the copper is being deposited onto the lead. Due to the process, copper is deposited at random thicknesses over the entire bullet, but guess which dimension tells the plater his job is done? Well, it's not the length!

Length is certianly nice to know, but it's far from being the controlling dimension on the bullet. No, the plater is watching for the time when the bullets get to the correct diameter  and then he pulls the lot from the tank.

Jacketed bullets will be a lot closer, but plated are going to vary much, much more.

Blue bullet 147's are .671" long.   They are meant for the powder shortage.   The max I can load them to, for a CZ, is 1.09.   At that OAL, I'm using 3.25 gns to make 132PF.

1SOW, I had a couple of MBC bullets to add, and I wanted to see if I could get the data into more of table format.  The above post is what I came to.  If you're interested, and if you have both Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word, I can tell you how to do it.  It's super simple.  ;)

Push test says to load at 1.075 C.O.L. (this is after SUBTRACTING a .015 SAFETY FACTOR)
on my CZ P-01.

I have to push test my CZ SP-01 now.

1SOW,

I edited the info above in my post about ACME 147 RNFP.
I had my CZ P-01 C.O.L. listed as possibly 1.100 to 1.090.
Just finished THE PUSH TEST with 8 different cartridges multiple times.
The C.O.L. for MY CZ P-01 will be 1.075 (with .015 SAFETY FACTOR) with the
ACME 147 RNFP (No Lube Groove).
HI-TEK Coated projectile.

Moonman,  I really appreciate the offer for bullet length compilation,  but I personally believe the reloaders should find their own Max OALs.
Some in a hurry might just use what's posted without testing their chamber.  Just my typing errors could cause serious problems.  ::)
The bullet lengths, types and nose shapes provide a "leg up" for those interested.

The Xtreme 147 HP (hollow point) is .623, while the Xtreme HPCB (heavy plate concave base) is .668".

So in my search for a bullet length I came across this forum that had this factory pull down thread with a ton of good info in it.  I thought it might be useful for this thread.

Lot's of different bullet length's and weights listed there.  Along with OAL's and velocities!

Cheers,
Toby

Gentlemen, here?s a set of ?equivalent? lengths for Rainier Plated HP.

115 gr HP, 0.515
124 gr HP, 0.547

Rationale and methodology: The Rainier HP bullets have concave bottoms. Physical length isn?t meaningful because there is a concave volume down there. For the purpose of figuring out bullet seating depth, the length of an equivalent flat bottom bullet is good enough to calculate the remaining case volume.

You can check my math.

1.   Average of 5 bullets is 115.0 gr. The length is 0.525, BUT the bottom is concave.
2.   I sanded off the concave bottom of a 115 gr Rainier HP. The bottom is now flat. The bullet weigh in at 111.7 gr and 0.503 long.
3.   That means the removed lead from the concave bottom is 3.3 gr.
4.   Question: We want to add that same volume of lead back to the bottom of the bullet in the form of a 0.355 diameter disk. What would that length be?
5.   1 gm = 15.4 gr.              So 3.3 grain = 0.214 gm
6.   Lead has a density of 11.34 gm/cm3.   So  0.214 gm =>0.0189 cm3.
7.   1 in3 =16.39 cm3.          So 0.0189 cm3 => 0.001153 in3
8.   The area of a 0.355 disk (added to the bottom of the bullet) is 0.0989 in2. 0.001153 in3 would fit in 0.0117 in length.
9.   Add that 0.0117 to the 0.503 from the shortened 111.7 gr gives 0.5147. round off to 0.515.

Do the same thing for the 124 gr bullet. You need to shave off 12.3 grain. That extra length comes out to 0.0436. Add that to 0.503, we get 0.547.

I just bought some 124g round nose projectiles from Bayou Bullets. They have change the profile of their bullet considerably, their new bullet is much shorter and has no grease ring in it and I measured it today at .572. I shoot a Tanfoglio Limited Custom in Competition.
I loaded the old Bayou 124's (.605 long)to 1.109 OAL and they plunked and shot very accurately and cycled 100%
The new projectiles (.572 long) I have to load to 1.081 ( .028 shorter ) for my gun to cycle the newer projectiles.
I have had to do some adjusting on the bell and powder for these as well.

It has taken me a while to get this right. I really liked the old ones and had the recipe dialed in perfect.
The new ones have been hit and miss until now and I think I have finally developed the new ticket for my gun.
I will need to shoot 500 or so to know they are reliable.
I will keep you posted. Wish me luck.

RCG

The attached quote refers to Bayou 124g RN as the projectile I was referring to. So in case anyone may not have realized I was still talking about the same items
I apologize. The new profile of the projectile that caused me some difficulty was the 124g RN Bayou. Sorry I may have inadvertently caused some confusion.
