Title: My project
Post by: Eugene Onegin on June 03, 2014, 03:10:39 PM
What I have is a VZ2008 and as you know the later receivers will not accommodate the side rails that Czechpoint sells but I still want to put a side rail on this rifle so my question is, is there a gunsmith  out there that will mill this rail so that it will fit ?

I think you're ahead to to modify your receiver to be honest.  Finding a good gunsmith is very difficult.  Many gunsmith these days are like the quick change oil place's tech folks -- can pull an oil plug, but ask them to weld or time w/ a timing light and they're SOL.  Same goes for gunsmith's if it's more than just a cleaning and basic part swap...

Rather than gunsmiths, I'd look for a quality builder that's well experience in milling.

First one that comes to mind is from the galil world and that's Jeff Miller/Tennagalil/Hillbilly Firearms.  http://hillbillyfirearms.com/

There are many, many pictures of his work over the Uzitalk galil forums and probably elsewhere on the interwebs.  He's built a few VZ58s too.

Here's a recent one: http://www.uzitalk.com/forums/showthread.php?75386-Latest-Aquisition-from-TennGalil

He does lightening cuts on Galil receivers for R4 builds, engraving, all sorts of various finishes.  Highly detailed.

I'm sure there are others, but my advice is to look to receivers with experience building/modifying milled receivers -- FALs, possibly 80% lower AR builders (though a lot of them just freehand dremel), Galils, M14/M1 builders are the ones that come to mind offhand.

P.S. If you want refinishing, a nitrided barrel, or any of the other fancy/need a competent person to do it, you're probably ahead pricewise to have it all done in the same trip...

I love the furniture on that VZ in that pic up there!

Allegedly it's original czech.  I've never seen anything like it unless it's beech stained to match the beaver barf color.

Ironwood designs has some newer stuff too...

If anyone finds out, I'd love to hear it.

Other options other than modifying the receiver -- top covers and alternative rails -- are discussed in this thread:
http://www.czfirearms.us/index.php?topic=64419.0

I did forget to mention the:

Corwin Arms Dragunov mount:
http://www.corwin-arms.com/product/cz-858vz-58-side-mounted-dragunov-type-scope-rail

And the VZ58Rifle.com Posp Mount:
http://www.vz58rifle.com/products/montazni-lista-tz-pro-optiky-posp/

This also has a deflector available:
http://www.vz58rifle.com/products/usmernovac-nabojnic-blatnik-pro-puskohledy-posp

Corwin, you'll need to make sure that your scope mount rail protects the scope during ejection -- need to run a full flat bottom protection, not just open with rings...

Either of these should work on the VZ2008 receiver w/o modification.

Do you by chance know if the Corwin Arms Dragunov side rail will work with the RS Vz-304 mount made specifically for the Vz58?

Thanks
Rob

I don't think it will, SVD side rails are different then AK type rails and the VZ 58 rail that I have .

If it is SVD spec then the VZ-304 will mount to it fine.  The question will be how high and where will it place the optic.  I suppose the advantage is that with any of our lowers you can move the optic front-to-back as needed to get around that.

I'm sure Corwin can answer any of your questions on the mount.  He sells several scope mounts over there too.  No idea what's "best"...

How do we know any of these side rails will
position a POSP over the center of the bore?

Have you looked at any of these Side Rails?

I'm think one of these has to work.

http://kalinkaoptics.com/firearm-accessories/side-rails.html

Zenit Universal AK/SKS/SVD Side Mounting Rail, Undrilled
Zenit Advanced Universal AK/SKS/SVD Side Mounting Rail
SKS/SVD Thick Side Mounting Rail for SKS, Mauser and Other Rifles w/ hardware
Narrow SKS, Mosin-Nagant, Other Rifle Universal Side Mounting Rail for AK/SKS/SVD Side Mounts.

That's how it goes. O0 I was looking at buying one, then noticed a few days ago that they were out. But they were available for about a month this time around.

Mr. Eugene, if I may ask, what mount are you using? It looks like the red dot sits really low, the way I'd prefer.

Also, is the optic centered on the rifle or offset to either side?

It's a LPM-1H mount from CSA.
