Title: New Tisas 1911 is here!
Post by: badjuijui on September 18, 2014, 09:55:33 AM
First impressions:  I expected a lot of machine marks, etc, but the gun has a pretty good fit and finish.  It's hard to rack the slide, like one review put it, you have to be King Kong to rack it.  It's not that bad (I had a RIA officers that was worse) but I do cock the trigger before racking the slide as I have arthritic fingers.  The safety works but seems to be a little loose or something.  It's like there is a catch halfway, like it's set, but it's not and you have to push it up further.  The only other problem I have seen is that when racking the slide, it will sometimes catch on the notch that you align to take down the weapon.  May have to smooth that out a little.  Other than that, I am very pleased. The Walnut grips are not smooth finished, but much better than the ones that came with my son's Girsan 1911. For $357 it's the bargain of the year IF it shoots like it looks.  That's always a big IF, huh?  Hope to get it to the range soon.  I have cleaned it with Frog Lube solvent and treated it with Seal 1 paste.  In fact, I did it three times over. so it's seasoned with the Seal 1. I have never used Frog lube or Seal 1 (which is like Frog lube, but better imo as it works better in cold and stays on metal better) on a 1911.
It only came with one Mecgar Mag, so I bought two more of the same from Buds when I ordered it. It also came with a nyon brush on a wire handle, and a plastic rod for running patches thru the barrel.  Also comes with a little manual, a cheap case, and the fired bullet in a plastic bag.  There is no date on the bag so I have no idea when it was test fired.
Ok, now for the obligatory gun porn:

I have been debating getting one of these and then giving it as a gift to my dad for Christmas or something. He has always wanted a 1911 but balked at the prices when I showed him Dan Wessons and even Springfields. He has some German revolver right now, but he has always fawned over the 1911 he shot in the service.

Being a Navy vet myself, I couldn't resist these grips I got on the pic below.  They are Hogue grips that I got on discount on the web.

How is the slide to frame fit?  Looking forward to an accuracy report!

The slide to frame fit is great!  I suspect that after I shoot a couple of three hundred rounds thru it that the recoil spring will loosen up a little.  Thinking of getting an 18 pound and 16 pound spring though, as the one that is in it feels like at least 20 or more. Trying to get to the range today, but it's looking like I may not get cut loose in time.  Oh well, going tomorrow for sure if not.

I believe I'll keep my American-made Auto-Ordnance 1911A1. 500 rounds, so far, and absolutely zero problems or complaints.

I'm not sure this will translate into a shooting problem either.  No offense, but if this thing shoots anything like my Turkish Sar B6 Hawk, it will give any American made 1911 besides the custom jobs a run for their money.  And it cost under $400, shipping, lifetime warranty and ffl fee included. I have had American made guns have problems and I have had foreign made guns have problems.  For the money, you want find a 1911 that can touch this one imo.

The good new is that the gun is very accurate.  The bad news is that I had several failure to feed out of 125 rounds. The spent case ejected but the new round jammed against the feed ramp every time.  Very easy to finish loading, so not that big of a deal if it quits.  I didn't polish the feed ramp, my bad.  I used Seal 1, which is an improved froglube type substance, and maybe I should have used the Weapon shield oil and grease for the slide ramps instead.  I also have a Wilson 18 pound recoil spring coming.  I swear, the recoil spring in the Tisas could double as a car leaf spring.  A little disappointed, but not every pistol starts out well.  Not giving up just yet as the fit is very tight on this thing and I won't make any more changes after the recoil spring and polishing the feed ramp until I get at least 500 rounds thru it.  Tisas doesn't give a recommendation for a break in period, but my last 1911 made by Armscor, had a 500 round break in period.

I think I remember seeing Hickok45 do a review of the Tisas 1911. He was pretty impressed with the accuracy, fit, and finish for the price point they're at. I don't recall him having any hiccups with the gun either.
