Title: An almost Fifty Year Old .22 Rifle Came Back Home,
Post by: 1SOW on October 02, 2014, 07:36:19 PM: Back in the '60s, I bought a cheap bolt .22 for West Texas jack rabbit shoots. 10 years or so later, I gave it to my son for his first rifle.
Recently my son moved and found that old .22 when packing for the move. He brought it back and said he wouldn't be using it and wanted to return it..

The O.F. Mossberg 340C came with 7rd mags adjustable for short, long or long rifle ammo. ::). The rifle is in very good shape, but part of the rear sight is missing and the adjustable mags were a pita, so I found a source and ordered the part, a 10rd LR mag and a printed Owners Manual.. 8)

I'm hoping it still shoots, and look forward to playing with it. The receiver is dovetailed for a scope or other, so maybe ......

I gave him my Marlin 39a lever action .22 that I got when I was 10 years old in 1952. Two years ago, I gave him a Thompson Center .45 Hawken muzzleloader. Two weeks ago I gave my son my Ithaca 37 12 gauge shotgun that belonged to my dad.

Post by: 1SOW on October 02, 2014, 09:16:31 PM: The wood surprised me how well the coating has held up. It virtually looks new. The bbl has some pits and light corrosion ahead of the stock--but not bad.
I don't think it's maple, but will have to get my wood reference charts out to compare the wood grain.

This rifle was less than $60 back then. The ONE 10rd mag today was $32 and felt lucky to get it.. ;D

That bolt handle won't clear a 1" tube scope, but for a mere $60 they sell a high mount adapter to offset a 1# tube back to a normal eye relief distances. ::) a mini 2moa red dot would fit as is.

It has crappy sights, butI did win some turkey and thick sliced bacon at 'Turkey Shoots' in the 70s'. ;D ;D

In the mix was Ely and Stingers along with Remington .

Lakota, THAT is very cool. A lever action tube fed, neat!
Some of my very best memories are shooting with my son. He will get my inherited Sweet 16 AFTER I'm gone.
P.S. I was born in Deaconess Hospital on Jefferson Ave.. ;)

We've still got my dad's 39A from the early 50's. I liked shooting it so much I bought myself one in the early 80's before they added the cross bolt safety. They are real tack drivers. The only difference between the two rifles was 8 groove rifling in the old gun and the micro groove rifling (16 grooves) in the model I have. Mine now sports a Leupold scope and my 10 year old son loves to shoot it. My brother now has my dad's rifle and I assume my son will one day get mine.

Lakota169, there's an original Marlin model 39 (1920's vintage, with octagon barrel and color case hardened receiver) hanging on the wall above me as I type this and an Ithaca model 37 in the safe ::)
