Title: SP-01 in 40 caliber?
Post by: targa88 on May 20, 2006, 10:56:50 AM
I already have a 9mm ( I know you can never have too many guns) - but I was hoping, maybe against all odds, that since the CZ75 comes in a 40cal maybe there are plans for the SP-01 to have that option also.
It really has more to do with major vs minor loads for competitive shooting.
Thx.

I think Angus said he's been working (with the factory) on a .40 prototype.  It may be coming, but don't expect it soon.

What would be the difference between a CZ SP-01 in 40 caliber and a CZ 40P?

The SP-01 is a full-size gun with larger capacity mags, night sights{?}, and a better trigger.

Depending on the model, it can have a safety rather than a decocker.  And the SP-01 has a steel frame (although CZ may be about to introduce an alloy-framed model.)

Don't know if the new alloy-framed model will be available in .40, though.

The dustcover would run full-length, be same length as the slide.
The frame would be steel
Possible one version would be with manual safety, not just a decocker version.

I would guess that the current SP-01 would have a capacity of 15 or possibly 16 in .40 S&W.

I have seen the alloy version of the SP01 it has a square trigger guard somehing very new for CZ. Similar to a sqaure off 1911. A Mod that people did to 1911 for years. It definitly is s lot lighter and might be a option for police, basically the actual big brother of the P01.
Not sure what the option was the  one I saw was an SA DA

I'll be in line for a couple of SP-01s in .40 with full trigger work, after the design has been completely hashed out -- I've always thought that the weight makes it a perfect platform for the .40.

An alloy frame SP-01 would be an interesting idea for duty carry.  The weak link for uniform carry is getting Safariland to make it's standard holsters (eg 6280 and 6004) for the model.

I'd really like to see a P-01 in 9mm with a manual safety instead of a decocker.  From years with a 1911, my thumb always wants to ride the decocking lever, so none of the CZ decocker models work for me.

Off topic, it's interesting that Irlene Mandrell is the CZ spokes person.  I remember watching the Mandrell Sisters on tv years ago.

I agree on the P-01 with the manual safety, that would be the perfect carry pistol for me.  Instead, I had to go with a RAMI because of its manual safety.

Why not go with the CZ Compact .40 (http://cz-usa.com/product_detail.php?id=63)? It has the safety instead of the decocker. I guess if you needed 9mm then it would be a waiting game to see if CZ will introduce the pistol in that caliber.

1) it's not a 9mm
2) at 37.8 ounces unloaded, it is way too heavy for a 10+1 capacity CCW weapon

It does look cool though.

I don't believe that it is too heavy.

most carry guns weight less than 30 ounces.  38 ounces is more than the majority of competition guns out there (Glock 34/35, EAA Witness pistols, etc.)  If it had an alloy frame it would be just about right.

I agree that an alloy compact 9mm with manual safety would be just right.  Generally, I prefer full-sized heavy guns in larger calibers (.45, .40), or compact light guns in smaller calibers (9mm).

Other variations, like a heavy full-size 9mm can be good for duty/service carry because of negligible recoil, but for me isn't a great option for concealed carry.  Heavy compact guns in large calibers can work well, like the 75 Compact in .40, because the extra weight helps to reduce recoil.

I took a Glock 23 through some training a few years ago, and to my frustration a buddy with a Glock 19 out shot me in double and triple taps.  The next day when I shot my CZ85 combat, I easily turned in the best groups on the line in double taps, strong/weak hand, and low light flashlight.

My ideal CZs would be the 85 Combat, of which I own two, an SP-01 in .40 with a trigger job, and a manual safety P-01.  I like my 9mm SP-01s, but given a choice between 9mm and .40 in a 40+ oz full-size pistol, I'd prefer the .40.

I suppose I will have to wait for the 40 caliber.... North of the border
