Hi guys,
For those of you that shoot the SP-01 in production class, I'd like to hear your feedback on any performance gains you've seen since moving to this gun. I'm thinking about getting one to test.
Any thoughts? Would like to hear from Matt on this one if possible.
Thanks,

It took a while for me to notice any differences. I was shooting an 85 Combat previously and it took some time to transition. The gun is heavier so the timing is a little different, but once I got used to it, I really like it a lot. I have started knocking out 100% classifiers with it, and even made GM in Limited with it, shooting out of Production gear, minor ammo and all. I have never shot better than I am right now, so I am happy I made the switch.
I would also be interested to hear from some B and C class shooters who started using the SP-01.

I am a D class shooter. Spent last year with a 75BD. The extra weight is nice. Barrel stays put when transition and the larger controls are a plus.
But my big thing was the sights. I up graded to the fiber optic and competition rear. I could have added it to my old gun too.
Maybe I will be a C class shooter someday...

jeeez..
nice shooting Matt on the GM in limited...
no need to get a TS if it can be done with a SP01
I am really happy with the SP01..set up with the new sights and a good action..pretty solid A class shooter in production..

Thanks for the replies guys -
Matt - that's impressive on the GM card in Limited with a production gun. I have one too but it certainly didn't happen with a minor gun - very impressive.
I have no CZ experience - glock shooter, but a friend just bought one from Angus and I've played with it a little - it certainly has potential. The only downside I see is getting accustomed to the weight as I am sure it drives very different during high speed tranisitions than the lighter guns. Typically, I prefer a lighter gun because they drive better, IMO. However, what I little I did shoot the gun it seemed very flat and the recoil impulse was very nice. I'd really have to spend some time benchmarking the gun on some drills to learn more.
I think I'm going to buy one from Angus. In fact, I have one ordered right now from him.
Thanks again for the input guys.

Matt asked to hear from some C & B shooters; I am currently a B class USPSA shooter; I switched from Limited after last Nationals.
The SP-01 shoots as well as I expected in our sport. I have had mine for about 5 months now but only focused on it for the last three.
How good is it?
Over the weekend I shot it at a USPSA season opener in Fredericksberg, VA (results for members on www.uspsa.com Fredericksberg VA, March Match). There were 120 shooters at this local match. The only people who shot better than my SP-01 were Julie Goloski's boyfriend, Simon and some Grand Master Limited shooter who decided to shoot Production - the gun really is THAT good!
This match also featured the two famous IDPA champions (ha ha), Phil Strader and Todd Jarret (though they were competing in Limited, NOT production). Point is, it was a tough match with some long/tough shots but the SP-01 easily held its own. The match was 130 rounds - plus a lot of running & shooting & some mental games (stages that saw some shooters FTE one target & engage other 4x by mistake). THe SP-01 never missed a beat!
I have also used the SP-01 to shoot 2 classifiers; one in the 75% range last weekend and another in the 77% range at the lastYork pa classifier; my number is TY-44934. I am telling you, its the gun; it really is that good.
Regards,
Douglas
PS - my gun is set up similar to SP-01 Shadow - but without the "fiber optic" sight. I do not like FO sights on a handgun, though they are OK on 3gunshotgun. It is also covered in grip tape (which I like) and is well broken in w/ all the dry firing & some live fire practice.
-
Douglas..
I always thought they said its the shooter not the gun..
Hope my SP01 makes me look that good..
-
Thanks EERW!
I confess that I become more serious about my dry firing over the past few months.
I also made up 3 dry fire magazines that are filled w/ actual lead bullet dummy rounds to simulate real loaded magazine weight for reload practice.
I sometimes practice my reloads in a pitch dark room & sometimes I use a mirror to try to catch mistakes; I need to work on:
-shooting on the move
-faster reload on the move
-slowing for the entry to firing position
-last shot before moving/reloading and first shot after
-fewer alpha/charlies & more 2alpha
-patience
So much room to improve!
I am also signed up for Are 6, 7, and 8 as well as Summer Blast & hopefully Nationals.
I think the SP-01 can take me as far as I want to go.

Douglas

Douglas,
Thanks a bunch for your replies - I found them to be very helpful. It certainly appears you have a lot of confidence in your SP-01.
I've been impressed with what SP01 owners have been saying about their guns in terms of their use in competitive shooting events.
Thanks again and good luck with your 06 shooting season!
Matt - I noticed you nailed a 100% classifer score on 99-11 El Prez recently. Do you mind me asking what your run score/time was on that? Thanks again!

Bryan..
what gun are you going to shoot at the Dbl Tap match???
just curious..
-
Will be shooting a G17 w/Dawson fixed sights - Zero 147JHP VVN320 load, out of a DOH rig - This is my current production set up. I do have my friends SP-01 and I plan on shooting it some this weekend - I think he wants to sell it to me now - it's an Angus upgrade w/spare mags. Only problem is it has a FO front site, and I don't shoot FO sights - They are fine up to a point, but I tend to drop too many points when I shot them, especially at distance at IPSC speed. I'm not sure I could make the transition in 2 weeks but I will shoot it some this weekend just to get a feel for the gun.
Once the DTC is done, my plan is to make the transition and start getting ready for some of the Area matches - I think Area 4 will be my next major match...not sure yet.

Bryan, went and looked at the match results it was a 5.43sec 56pts. Missed the draw a little bit and had to shuffle the gun around, missed the reload a bit and had to stop and insert the mag, but the shooting part went great.
According to the timer I gave up almost .7 on the draw and .8 on the load....probably would have been a 4-flat run.
-
Thanks Matt - 4 flat and great points with a production gun is SMOKIN good. Your match run was great as is at 5.43.
That's just impressive, that's all I can say- I think Sevigny won the El Prez stage at the Nats a few years back and it wasn't that fast - 5.6 I think. I can usually hit the low 5's in practice after warming up some but I've never broke the 5 second barrier with a production gun and kept all of my hits.
Thanks again for sharing that Matt.

Okay, I had a chance today to shoot the SP-01 in a practice session along with my G17. I decided to run the two guns back to back on the El Prez - CM 99-11.
My load for these runs were a precision 124JHP VVN320 that chrono'd an average of 1040-1050 out of each gun. This load is much softer than any 115FMJ factory stuff.
Gear was production legal, and the drill was set up to spec.
My best run was with the SP-01 and given that I hadn't shot this gun until today, I was very impressed.
The SP-01 run on El Prez was 58 pts in 5.65 which factors out to 10.265 - It's fair to note here that I really missed the draw and hit a first shot of 1.7, and the reload shot to shot time was 1.5 flat. Not great on either for sure but the overall run was certainly good for production division. In fact, the HF on this run would be a 100% or very close to it.
With my G17, my best run was 54 pts in 5.79.
I shot some other drills using the SP01 too and was equally impressed with its shootability and especially its accuracy.
I think with some transition practice and some dry fire work, I could really like this gun for a production platform. I can see now why so many folks are either shooting this gun or wanting to get one. It certainly seems to deliver the goods.
Just thought I'd share my findings from todays practice session.

Shot the York classifier again & SP-01 never missed a beat. I love this gun! If you take out the classifier "baseball standards" (where mikes are not counted) then I had zero mikes, zero no shoots all day (and there were 3 field courses as well as the 4 classifiers). I felt certain I had pulled a few Ds that actually turned out the be A's - don't ask me how. I also switched to the Angus load of N320 under a 124 Zero JHP. I am still in B so far as I know but A class is not far away thanks to the SP-01.

Can't wait it get my twicked sp-01 from Matt.
I plan to shoot production with it in KY,TN and GA state uspsa matchs.
I am currently A limited and B production. This will be my first CZ.

You guys have started to get me going and now I think Id like to try a SP01. You like the 124gr load instead of 147? Any reason. I currently shoot my G34, but the 147 gr load is by far better in the Glock than the 124 or 125.
Thanks,
Kevin
