Title: Old school stocks - Some nice stocks appearing online.
Post by: CitizenPete on February 24, 2015, 04:08:40 PM
Lots of nice wood stocks on eBay as of late: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Czechoslovakia-army-Original-Wood-complete-kit-VZ58-SA58-With-Hardware-/301538885184?ssPageName=ADME:B:WNA:US:1653

VZ58Rifle has them for a relatively decent price as well.

I picked up a set of wood on eBay and have been wittling on them with sand paper here and there when I have the time and gumption to get dusty.  Picked up some polyurathane based stain today along with other bits at the HoDe, gonna do mine a redish color instead of the red-brownish/yellow. Its going on a wall rifle for looks and will not be intended to be used "in anger", as they say.

Also saw on Zahal and elsewhere that there is a black polmer stock stock of the same profile as the BB and wood stock.  That might be a good option for bargin builds to R&R the 58V para folder.

Great to see all these options for accessories and furniture for the Samopal Vz.58 variants everywhere.  AKMs always got all the attention  :(

I'm about to place an order with Zahal right now for some goodies.  ;D

Looks nice, but cannot justify a $200 wood stock set on a $300 rifle.

That's like saying "I can't out $500 worth of tires on my $1000 car"

+1 -- though I equate tires more with barrels on rifles, and furniture more w/ a car interior...

Regardless, what you paid for the rifle isn't what it's worth...  It's a $500-700 rifle whose value you increased by a couple hundred dollars adding a great set of wood furniture to...  Granted, I personally have a set of wood set away for part of a collection rifle, not a work one, so can't necessarily recommend it due to durability and cost issues unless you already have shooters...  Stocks are cheaper than the rifles and personally would go with a wood stock and modern railed forend any day before the beaver barf...

Here we go again.  I've heard this tune before.  Thank god it wasn't free as a gift.  Then you couldn't justify a new sling for it.

Funny how many $450 WASRs are fully upgraded with $1000 worth of parts.

I'm rolling into $5000 on parts and accessories for my VZ.58 SBR build.

I did not say it was for everybody, just me.  Then consider I will dump well over $1000 in ammo through each.  Different strokes for different folks.

Maybe you can understand the mindset if I explain the perspective of some people, or "strokes" as you say.

Thinking like an investor in realitively low cost guns: A "401G"

I have tactical shooters that are pretty scratched up from operating them and they probably will get some rattle can treatment this year.  They have  highly functional, adjustable  ergonomic FAB Defense tactical polymer stocks on them that I can run over with a truck.  They fit my body style to a T.  I am built like the Adonis, just a lot heavier, wider, hairier and shorter . ;D

When CzechPoint recently sold those few gorgeous SA VZ.58 rifles with 50 year old wood stocks on them, even they stated on their web site that they recommended a polymer stock over the wood if you were going to operate this weapon heavily.  They sold out in days (if not hours).  Two forum members were lucky enough to snag them for their collections.

Stocks improve the functionality, ergonomics, and looks of the rifle, thus increasing the value. (The wood furniture I bought is actually going on a "wall gun" a.k.a. "safe queen" - an unfired VZ2000 in the collection that will probably not get fired more than once every two years from the bench. I see it as enhancing the "beauty"  :-* of the rifle in an original configuration - albiet fancied up a bit. It's a hobby and an investment.  The antique wood stock can increase the future resale value of the rifle considerably.

I put an unfired Russian Molot VEPR AKM47 with beautiful Deep Redwood (Ironwood) furniture on display at my gunshow booth a few years back.  While it was a flawless unfired AK47 beast and a superior AKM (1.5 mm RPK style receiver, etc etc), it was the red wood furniture that really made it special.   It was prominantly displayed horizontally on the center table, raised up 3 feet on a covered support.  When you saw this rifle, the fracking Russian national anthem started playing in your head.  I put a tag on it with a ridiculous F/U price on it - over 2X what I paid for it a year early, with absolutely no (zero) delusions of anyone buying it at that ridiculous price.  The rifle was just there as a conversation piece and an attention getter to draw folks to the table to see other rifles, ammo, parts etc...   Early in the day from 20 feet down the isle I see two middle aged casually dressed guys (no camo between them) make a B-line to the rifle. And the big gentleman says - "I'll take that AK47, I have to have it", and pulled a roll of hundreds out of his pocket.    He paid full price, no discussion.  I literally cried (tears running down my face) as I packed it in the box for him, but everything has a price I guess.   Bottom line -- it was the ultra-"authentic" look of the red wood that made this special rifle even more special as AN INVESTMENT.  I doubt he has ever shot it.

Ammo doesn't count as a capital investment (unless your buying pallet loads, or speciality ammo intended for for WROL stash), Target ammo does not enhance functionality, ergonomics, looks, or increase the resale value of the rifle.  It's like gas for the car - it's a consumable that is part of the necessary cost of operation.

CP - We are on the same page, buddy!  As you know, I have a couple US made cherry wood sets I'll probably never get my money back on - but they are gorgeous!  Now this thread has me wanting some original Czech wood stocks again!  argh!!!   The Czechpoint build I snagged (and ALL those wood rifles sold out in less than 24 hours) has the beaver barf stock - but it's still a beaut!

I think "Hard Corps" collectors add to their rifle as they want and don't care about base price vs upgrades....   Thanks for posting the link!  Now I just need my wife to go visit her family and leave the credit card..... ;)

PS - shooting my CSA that has the US curly cherry is the most comfortable shooting VZ I have ever shot...

Good news is that VEPRs actually are not banned from import...

Atlantic has been getting them in as apparently they hadn't fully transferred whatever to Kalash Concern when Obama's ban hammer came down...  And they've had some plum wood ones too...

So I stained my wood furniture I purchased from OOW. I sanded out the original varnish and applied 3 coats of polyurethane dark-wood stain and 4 coats of clear coat. After a single day of handling though,  the stock shows some dings already sigh...

Maybe I should have just left it without stain it and just applied several layers of clear top coat. Then the dings wont show up that obvious?! I plan to use this on a carbine course and make it a daily shooter so I am sure it'll get worse. I  don't  particularly handle  my guns with kid gloves...

But I do love the  *feel* of the wood stock on my cheek!
