...how about the plastic body? With 00 sand paper, elbow grease and two or three thin coat of a black laquer the slides on my pair of CZ-82's look pretty sharp, but I'd like to get rid of a few superficial gouges in the gun's plastic body. Assuming it too can be sanded down how would you finish the surface?

If by 'body' you mean the grips (the only plastic things I know of on the 82), I would forget refinishing them.
Instead, get some truck bed repair spray and spray the grips. Not only will you cover any imperfections, but the finish is far easier to obtain a better grip with. I have it on my 82 and love it. Try it on a block of wood to see if you would like it first.

The grips are not the issue. (Those could simply be replaced). I'm referring to the rest of the gun exclusive of metal - ie. the molded portion above the grips where the thumb rests.

I also am not sure what you talking about as the only plastic parts on a CZ82 are the grips. please post a pic and show the parts your taking about and we maybe able to help.
here is a link to a good site with lots of info about the CZ82 with some refinishing threads and a gunsmith section with step by step break instructions that might be of help to you.

The rest of the gun is exclusively metal. You sure you've got a cz82 cuz you ain't makin' no sense. ;)

I have been waiting to see where this goes.
Very curious if someone has started making a polymer framed CZ-82 :D
