Title: "I want a gun.... but not black"
Post by: SpartanRN on May 28, 2015, 05:16:11 PM
So out of the blue, my wife wants a gun (YESSS). So I started showing her these different guns...

Starting with the Glock 43.
She says, "But that's a Glock." Uh.. yes, it is. "You don't like Glocks." I mean.. they're reliable guns, they will work. "But it's ugly."

Ugh.. ok, moving on. Showed her the Walther PPS.
She says, "Ehh... I like your Walther more (PPQ)"

Let's put that as a maybe. Moving on.... what about another CZ 75 Compact (cross fingers)?
She says, "But I don't want black." Well.... bleep...

Suggestions?!

Something in stainless? My wife's eyes gravitated towards a bunch of large frame revolvers, especially the ones with the long barrels. She pointed to them and said, "Now, those are real guns." sigh...

Mine fell for 75B matte stainless.  Once she had it, she decided we should join a local range as full members ( ;D)

TELL her to temporarily ignore the "looks" of the gun and go for fit. Then once she finds something she likes, then look for the window dressing.

Black is the new orange.

This has got to be the best thing I've heard all day.

She really likes the RAMI. Doesn't mind that it's black. I think we found the gun!

Safety or BD?

She feels more comfortable with a safety.

My wife likes shooting our CZ, but there is no way in hell her hands can chamber that first round. She has some luck with pushing the rear sight against a table edge, but that seems a bit much. Wish I could get her on board with owning a CZ but she just can't work them. Probably have to get some kind of revolver. You guys' wives can load the first round??

When I injured my Ulnar Nerve, Joe(75plus) gave me the idea of using a piece of rubber hose that slipped over the Barrel but fit inside the Dust Cover, then cut to just the right length
Push that against the bench to rack the Slide
Also, cocking the Hammer first helps a bit
Try locking the Slide back first, insert the loaded Mag, then release the Slide dropping the Slide Stop

Not at first. The way she tried to rack the slide was the way you see them do it in movies -- barrel pointed up, index and thumb trying to pull the slide back. Taught her to hold the gun tight close to her chest (barrel pointed away and down of course), palm on top of the slide near the rear, fingers on serrations, finger off trigger, and then violently pull slide back. I think the key term there is "violently" as she was too gentle with the process.

Then you can let her pick out some custom grips for half what a cerakote job would cost.

First off, congrats! Secondly, how did you get her to that point? I can barely convince my wife to come to the range with me sometimes.

I agreed to do cooking classes with her. So now she's interested in guns, and I've expanded my culinary knowledge beyond Ramen.

If she wants a pretty gun then it is simple.
She gets exactly what my wife did CZ75B S.S. polished.

You get the CZ goodness and a gun that does not need to be refinished.
Also the Stainless models have an extremely tight fit, much tighter than my other CZ's.

Just saying! shiney gun, some grips and she can have her fashion accessory covered.
And still have one of the best shooting guns out there.

EDIT;
Just read the your comment on the RAMI.
Another excellent gun, I had one for a while then my wife stole it from me!!
Now it is her daily carry gun in her purse, and the one she shoots the most at the range.

Yeah it's a good choice for her because she's going to ne starting home health nursing and from experience I know they sometimes get sent to bad neighborhoods. She actually said that they told her that if someone is staring at her, she just needs to acknowledge them and they'll leave her alone. Uh no, I'm not entrusting her life to a friendly nod.

I teach women all the time how to rack guns they never thought they could. Close to the chest is right on and so is palm on top of slide. I also tell them to try to snug their index finger right up to the rear sight. That hand is used to hold the gun. Then with the pistol grip hand push down hard on the frame of the gun. Pushing away especially down is much easier. If you would like I can make a video demonstrating the technique.
