Title: My solution to the overheating beaver barf handguard....
Post by: GrendelGene on June 16, 2015, 10:36:27 PM
A friend has a mill, so I milled a flat edge on the bottom handguard...

I used a magpul rail...

This is is how it looked when finished

With a rail, now I can install a rail grip!!!!

It also works for a bipod....

Good thinking on the full length metal supporting the plate inside the bb. All I used was large washers, and it felt kind of weak with a full hand grip. I have a angled grip on mine, and I feel confident with it. I like the beaver barf look, so I left it on the 2nd VZ. A little lighter to. Think I will add the plate like you did. Good thinking paskeCZ. Don't worry Grendelgene. It wont melt  8).

I purchased the $20 heat shield on Ebay and it helped dissipate  the heat, enough that I was able to shoot without gloves doing rapid fire and mag dumps in 91 degree weather.

Some fitment is required on my wood handguard but on the beaver barf hand guard the fitment was spot-on!

Grendel - I like your approach to the mounting of the bracket. Any chance I could get you do the same for me if I supplied the hand guard?

Felix, I don't own a mill. Sorry
A friend did this as a favor to me.

But if I had to do it over again, i would do what Paske CZ did above. its easier and stronger... and requires no milling!!!!

That hand guard looks perfect on that Uzi.

I like the idea of metal reinforcement on the inside of the lower BB handguard.

How about drilling through both the BB and the internal heat shield for reinforcement? Or maybe a small strip of steel if there is room under or over the heat shield?

I like the Beaver Barf stuff too....though I am trying a Zahal pistol grip.

Good work guys!

I know this is old but. I added a fire resistant header wrap that is used to keep heat in the exhaust to the black plastic type lower hand guard. After some extensive mag dumps I can say this is a solid fix for the hand guard heat problem. However it does not help when your thumb or finger touch a piece of the nearby hot metal.  :o

the magpul zhukov handguard has a real nice heatshield:

I've done 4 back to back mag dumps (all my mags) without gloves without issue. The hand guard felt about as warm as a cup of coffee.

Did you purchase and install or is this a new CSA?

If the former, can you post how you accomplished that feat?

I installed it
That rifle is a vz 2008, other brands might vary.
Modifications to the rifle- remove lower hanguard, handguard retainer, and sling loop.

Modifications to handguard- the four mounting screws must be replaced with longer screws. Buy 4 10-24, 1 1/2" long button head machine screws at the hardware store. Also from the hardware store, you will need 4 aluminum unthreaded spacers, 1/2 inch long, with an inside diameter to fit the 10-24 screws. I paid $4.60 for all these parts.

When you mount the handguard, the spacers go on the screws between the heat shield and the barrel clamp.

Depending upon your choice of upper handguard, you might have some interference. I had to grind a very little bit out of the lower handguard right at the front of the upper handguard, and an even smaller amount out of the upper handguard where it was hitting the rear barrel clamp.

I have seen some other vz-58 rifles that fit the handguard much higher. It would take a lot more cutting and trimming, but it is possible. In that case, no spacers, use the factory screws, and I think you would need a lower profile upper handguard, like one of the small cowitness railed handguards.
Here is another one where the handguard sits higher (not mine)

Thank you for the reply and post.  I think Gary on the forum was asking about this a while back.  Does your hand guard have a specific model number or designation since it is different from the black one in the pic you posted?

Same handguard, just a different color. Mine is Flat Dark Earth.

I definetly like that. Nice job.

There is also a way to modify the zhukov stock to mount on the vz-58. I don't know how its done though. I'm pretty happy with the stock folder on my rifle, but the zhukov is a really nice stock.

I'm thinking of swapping for a railed upper handguard, so maybe when I swap it, I'll see if I can tuck the handguard up more.
