Title: CZ 75 cold weather FAIL in Nutnfancy vid; what could be the cause?
Post by: RNA on December 06, 2015, 12:18:11 PM
Not sure if anyone else has seen it, but Nutnfancy's CZ 75 Cold War commemorative simply would not go into battery after a few rounds in cold weather! Starting at 8:05...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xk7N7jFFHO0

Now I know Nutnfancy is a polarizing figure, but objectively from what we can tell:

-the CZ 75 was sitting in freezing weather for an hour to an hour-and-a-half
-fired fine for 3 rounds
-started failing at the 4th round; failed to go into battery
-shooter dropped mag and tried clearing several times; continued to fail to go into battery

What could be the cause of this fail? I'll continue to rely on my CZ PCR because I don't ever think I'll be putting my weapons in that condition, but still. That's quite a failure that more than a few of the comments suggest were totally a bummer/surprise. Possibly an ice box or cooler test next time I'm at the range might be in order to see if I could duplicate the failure. Has anyone else experienced anything like this?

If you watch closely you can see that the cause of this malfunction was a squib load. That guy is lucky that the pistol did not go back into battery...

CZ has been cleared of all charges. <Gavel Gavel>

Yea that certainly looks like a squib. I don't watch this guys vids as a rule but I do like the reviews hickok 45 does on youtube.

What would lead you to believe that it's a squib? I really don't think that's the case, and even if it was, what would cause the slide not to go into battery? I don't think cz is off the hook yet.

Without watching the video, I will say that improper lube in cold weather can have a negative impact on gun function.

To me, if you watch carefully round #4 has just a blip of flash at the top of the muzzle, and then the trouble begins.
I agree squib, and would like to see if the bullet was not even moved forward enough to allow the next round to go to battery. (Luckily)

First you can hear the squib. Second you can see a little bit of stuff come out of the end of the barrel from the pressure that made it past the round as it jammed in the barrel.

Some squibs can stop just inside the rifling. This can stop the next round from fully cambering because the squib is blocking the space that it requires to chamber.

Personally i do not think CZ was ever on the hook. A random malfunction in a video with allot of unknown factors dose not call for a reevaluation of ones faith in their firearm. My faith in CZ reliability is based on my personal experiences with the platform.

Yeah, shot #4 was really weird.  It never cambered another.  I thought it did at a later point, but he had dropped the mag to check the slide; then inserted the mag and didn't rack it, just pulled the trigger on an empty(ish) chamber...

Finally watched it. Yes, I see a small flash on #4. Had to back it up a couple times, but when he finally gets that round out it just barely rolls out over his shooting hand. Hard to see, but it looks like an empty case to me. Immediately after that, he ejects another round and it drops right out.
This is why I don't watch a lot of videos. Training or not, it doesn't seem right trying to slam the slide forward with your hand. If it ain't going forward STOP. There's an issue. Either squib or to long OAL. Just my opinion anyways.
Earlier I couldn't see the vid, so I took a guess at using grease instead of oil on the slide in cold weather. I really need to quit guessing and watch the video first. [emoji17][emoji17]

Oh dang! Now that you guys said it, i totally saw the small muzzle flash! The squib being stuck in the chamber would totally explain why the round couldn't seat/go into battery. But if that's the case, why wouldn't Nutn talk about that? Seems like a big factor to omit. Possibly because he was afraid of getting ragged for letting his little run and gun roll on despite a very dangerous situation? The plot thickens, gentlemen!

If the ammo used was his reloads, he would be in a world of liability problems if the shooter had managed to force the slide forward and fire one more time.

Nutn dose not reload as far as i know. They shoot factory ammo or ammo from their sponsor Tactical Ammunition as far as i have gathered. It may also have been the shooters ammo that he brought with him.

Looks like a squib to me.  In warm weather, I would say primer only.  In the cold it might have just a skosh of powder,  but I doubt it.  I've had a squib in very cold conditions;  but I did have had a primer only squib that behaved 'exactly' as shown.  I didn't try to pound the next rd in though. :o

It wouldn't make his sponsor look good either, so I'm not surprised he doesn't admit the cause.
