But, hey, every once in a while even I gotta color outside the lines. ;)
I've not been to the range as often as I would like, and here is one incredible reason why. Ladies and gentlemen, meet Dino!
(http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b13/armoredman/Pets/Dino_zpstlh6b3r4.jpg) (http://s16.photobucket.com/user/armoredman/media/Pets/Dino_zpstlh6b3r4.jpg.html)
No, Dino isn't mine; here he is with his actual owner, showing me one way to do ground work.
(http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b13/armoredman/Pets/Dino%20with%20Christene_zpsmqw4zbh8.jpg) (http://s16.photobucket.com/user/armoredman/media/Pets/Dino%20with%20Christene_zpsmqw4zbh8.jpg.html)
Dino was a rescued horse from an abusive situation, and his owner wanted him to try to bond with someone. She's a former employee of mine, and she knew I have always wished I had a horse - too expensive to buy and keep up. So she made me a deal - form a connection with a horse who needs a human he can trust, and she'll pay the bills, plus teach me how to ride. I got to actually ride him yesterday, (no pics, left my phone at home!), and we discovered I need a different saddle. I also discovered this guy kinda likes me already. Not the same as a dog or a cat by any means and I have a LOT to learn, but me and Mrs. Armoredman are having the time of our lives every time I go out for a lesson - she's next, BTW. ;)
-
What Mr. Armoredman didn't say is when I am out there with the horses I have never been so at peace when I am out there listening to nothing but horses and goats.
-
Taco the goat - attention goat, he is. 8)
-
Nice! Man's 2nd Best Friend.
-
Beautiful horse, when he trusts you, there will be many adventures ahead. He will take you wherever you want to go, but warn you of a path that should not be followed.
Please keep us updated.
-
To quote a friend of mine: All you need for happiness is a good gun, a good horse, and a good wife.
Good Luck with the Horse! 8)
-
Congratulations! My brother brought home a horse a few years back and now I think he has four of them. Be careful, this may be your next addiction :)
-
As a former horse owner you're gonna be hooked!! Enjoy.
-
I'm hooked, I'm hooked already - probably gonna need to buy a football helmet for the times I fall off.
-
That's awesome, grew up with many horses; enjoy your time with him ;D
-
I've always wanted to ride a horse but then I watch Top Gear and see them fall off a horse every single time one shows up.
-
I know lots of folks that love their horses and ride at least twice a week. I just consider them pasture ornaments. I always find myself walking into hunt camps when the rest of the group ride. I end up so saddle sore I can't hunt for 2 days if I try to ride in.

I love horses and really miss them alot. Riding horses kept me sane when work was crazy. It also gave me time away from the world.
I never owned a horse (but would like to one day) but leased them for years on end. I didnt want the 24/7/365 responsibility of the ownership due to more than horses and guns interest/hobbies. Leasing was the 2nd best to owning since it was like owning w/o any hassle....if i didnt or couldn't ride or get down to the barn, the owner or other lessee did it. when i went on vacation ,the other parties took care of the horse.
with most/all of my $$ going to travel now i just try to hitch a ride on my travels. I originally wanted to ride in each country, but after putting some thought into if i got hurt on my vacation, i decided to tone it down and try to do a ride at the end of my trip instead of beginning or middle.
This horse is "Shayle" he was a Quarter/Thoroughbred cross. He was a great school master jumper, unfortunately i wasnt that good to take advantage of his abilities. He was an honest jumper too and I never seen him refuse a jump. He's in horse heaven now enjoying all of the apples he can get.
This is "Toby". He was the last horse i leased and is a Lipizzan. Never thought i would be able to ride a Lipizzan in my lifetime.. He's happily semi-retired in sunny Prescott.

Remember...."the outside of the horse is good for the inside of man (or woman)"....
also, "the worse day in the saddle beats the best day in the office".

Bang Bang, Your horses are beautiful. I am sorry to hear that your big boy is now in heaven. Thank you for the pictures and the story's behind them with us.

Mrs Armoredman
no problem. I happy i had the chance/opportunity to be part of his herd before he died.
When you have a horse nicker to you when they see you, you know you are part of their herd. Its also heartwarming when they prefer to be with you instead of eating the chow at their feet. Its something that takes time but something i remember. Sometimes you bond, sometimes you dont.
-
I'm happy for you. I had a horse growing up....although I never was a good rider. My wife has a wall of trophy's from showing Western and barrel racing. I feel safer on a bike doing 150mph plus, that I control, over a Horse that may spook and hurl me to the ground when it wants........but again I'm not a good rider. A Horse can tell if your in control or he is.....and if I'm on his back and worried about my old arse ending up on the ground...he's in control. ;D
-
While not horse related, I had 2 rescue Brittanys over the past 2 decades and feel that I was blessed to have those dogs "adopt" me.
One was a stray who we determined was abused by a garden hose the other was too rambunctious for his first family. Both were spectacular bird dogs who "taught" me how to bird hunt and more so were great family pets.
The first one, Tanner, was the special pal to my youngest daughter when I was assigned to Saudi Arabia for a year, the other, Dazzel, hunted for my oldest daughter, giving us great memories.
Both are gone now, but will always be in my heart & memories.
My hat is off to you two for taking the time to work with a rescue. You won't regret it. I certainly didnt
-
Mr and Mrs A. Congrats!
They really grow on you. Riptide was my first. We also rescued 2 more off the track. Although I don't ride, my wife has ridden since she was 7. We are lucky enough to have a few local girls to ride and keep them in shape. They are very, very therapeutic. Enjoy him....
Cheers!

You think I gave awa y a good Christmas present today...I got mine a day late, too. First, these pics of today ; the Mrs doesn't like taking pictures, so we don't have any photos of me riding Dino today, but I got up to a trot - that took some fast getting used to! He felt like he didn't want to trot until I was ready, which was odd - it was almost like he was worried he might unseat me. But before that Mrs A got to practice leading Sadie, a 14 year old saddle mare, and a very beautiful horse. VERY loving animal, using the usual precautions, of course. She had a blast.
This is Sadie, behind her owner,

Sadie's not that big - her owner is that small. Small like a Compact CZ, I might say, lots of dynamite in a small package!
Mrs Armoredman leading her with instruction,

She had a great time! But how does this translate to a late Christmas present to me? Remember this guy?

She gave him to me. Seriously. She keeps him on her property, and I don't have to pay board. But Dino is mine. :) Discovered he has purple highlights in his coat and tail!
Merry Christmas!!

At the first barn i road at there was an mare that was used teach all of the new students. She knew when there was a 6 y/o kid or an adult on her and if they were a good rider. She also knew voice commands so when the instructor asked the rider to "trot" or whatever, she would be doing it faster than the student could give the ques. So the instructor ended up spelling what was wanted. afaik, the horse didnt learn to spell, but i wouldnt have put it past her. If any rider was about to fall off, she would stop dead in her tracks. sometimes good or bad depending on where you were in the saddle but you didn't have to ask her to stop, she knew better.
i had rode her alot and she taught me alot. She also taught me that she had limits. I would have been airborne if it wasnt for the instructor telling me i was POing her and i was a few second from being tossed. luckily everything worked out.

Congrats Mr.A.
Enjoy your new steed!

Not the same as a dog or a cat by any means and I have a LOT to learn, but me and Mrs. Armoredman are having the time of our lives every time I go out for a lesson - she's next, BTW. ;)
Does this mean your Forum alias will be changing to something like SpurMan, or Mr Ed, some some such foolishness ?
-
No it's not going to change anything. We are sharing this with everyone here for us being proud. No changing the name of the board at all.

Many of my ancestors fought from horseback, and wore armor, so I think my name still works. ;) Maybe I need to find some chain mail. :D

I'm hooked, I'm hooked already - probably gonna need to buy a football helmet for the times I fall off.
Just get back on again... ;D
Very cool. Had Horses in my family several times in my life. From Pony's as a child to Show Arabians. Awesome animals.
Been kicked in the chest & knocked on my ass, shocked by the electric fence, shoveled more Poo than I could make in my life time. Had a male pony named Hippy that liked to escape & was usually found on the Neighbors porch. Yeah... And the porch was just big enough for him alone. Memories....
Good luck!

Developing a relationship with an animal is very therapeutic, I think. When each of our sons left home, we got another dog. Thankfully, we only had two sons, staggered 4 years, so the dogs were staggered, which worked out fine as each pet passed on and we took on another one. Animals are unconditional, they know your feelings and react accordingly, good or bad.
I got to study in detail how our 8 year old Labradoodle interracted with our 1 year old grandson over Christmas. At first, each was cautious and tentative. After one day of supervised but not overly constrained interraction, the 75 lb Labradoodle was bringing the 1 year old her toys and very gently touching the baby's face with them, just like she does with the adults, just much more carefully. When the baby wasn't interested, he pushed the toy back towards the dog and the dog calmly walked off and waited for another opportunity. When the baby was upset, the dog was concerned. When the baby was asleep, the dog napped. Very enjoyable to observe. We are blessed. God is good.

I was just told some of the expense I'm picking up...really not what I was expecting, not bad at all. The original owner has friends all over the state and nation in the horse community and is able to get some amazing deals. Still stoked, even though I know just enough that owning a horse is about 10% riding and 90% horse care. :)

Joe, if he wants to give them away, I won't argue - not sure yet WHAT it is I'm looking for...what is a snaffle bit?
I know the saddle rack and saddle cover would come in handy, and the hoof pick and curry mitt would get instant use. :)

this has been my experience. If i put the hoof pick up for sale on craiglist for 0.25 someone will try to knock me down to 0.05. why? just because they can brag to their friends ? Even when 0.25 is a good deal too boot.
when i sell things i sell them to move and what i feel is a good price. No haggling. If i want to haggle, i will go to a car dealership.
I rather see the stuff go to being used instead of the landfill. i have a complete B&W & Color darkroom setup with 2 35mm cameras and lenses i would like to sell for cheap. My local photo shops told me to dump it all. Our society is at the "dump" mentality. Get a flat on your car, just dump it and buy a new one. i dont like to fill up our limited land with stuff thats re-usable. Im sure some of you dont mind dumping alot of stuff, but just wait until they decide to put one in your backyard and then you will have a different mindset. As long as its "not in my backyard" people are ok. I would ship it to anyone that can use it, but the cost of shipping would be too much for all of you out there and i dont want to spend more $$$ on it.
Armoredman
The snaffle bit is more or less used in the NON-western riding. IMO riding is riding. Its just the getup that makes the difference.
you can talk to the horses owner and see if the bit can be used. When it comes to bits, what it comes down to is Leverage. As a novice rider using the wrong (harsh) tools can do more harm than good. Although horses can be really tolerant and forgiving I'm sure you dont want to do more harm than good.
iirc, the bits i have are the "eggbutt" style. pic below.
The size is important since if its too wide, it will hang outside of the mouth and the opposite is not good either.
as far as the saddle rack goes, you may want to again ask the owner of the stable if they would mind having the rack mounted on the wall. If its your barn, then no issue, but i always asked when drilling holes or mounting things on other peoples property.
here is a pic off the web for a SIMILAR rack. It pivots to a raised position as shown and the diagonal support can be moved and the rack lowered to against the wall. Again its similar, but the one i have is older and i think heavier duty. I havent used any western saddles on it tho.
let me know what you want, but you may want to check with the horses owner and the bit size.
-
Oh, bits for the mouth - we do non bit riding right now. :) The rack and cover could be used, that's for certain. 8)

Some pics from today's lesson. I was on him in a Pirelli saddle, much better rig, and the Mrs got some good pics, plus I did a little movie.

i should be able to get it boxed up for next week.

I haven't been on the back of a horse in 20 years. I sure miss them.
-
The original owner decided that my wife was insulting her and that I was too lazy to provide for a horse, and decided to repudiate the gift. Needless to say, we're both stunned and hurt. It was a great deal of fun for a short time, and I am really going to miss that guy.
-
WOW! I'm really sorry to hear that A-man. Looks like the owner has shown her true colors.
-
I had just spent most of the weekend there, both days, sick as a dog, but still shoveling manure to show that I was committed to being a good owner. Gave him a shampoo bath yesterday and a good brushing today, but apparently I missed something, like a comment she made a week ago about how she could get 6-700 for him on the market. All I can say was it was a heady three weeks, but some good things aren't meant to last.
