Title: Is This Normal?
Post by: murphmatic on February 09, 2016, 04:21:46 PM
Greetings!
New to the world of CZs and need some help.
I just purchased a TriStar C100 9mm from Academy four days ago. I have not even fired it yet.
Yesterday I field stripped it for the first time. I saw what looked like gouges on the shoulder of the hole blocks inside the frame.
Is this normal for CZs? I have contacted TriStar and sent them these pictures. But it seems odd that without ever having fired the weapon it would make marks like that(http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160209/2c7d8ac9cce169da435ef0825b30130e.jpg)(http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160209/06fcfd804e748535c7c3bfdd90cc23f8.jpg)(http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160209/23ef8784c2f06e9b38ef7888268f0e63.jpg)

The guns are test fired before they're shipped.  The marks are probably the result of that.  I have a RM380 that had similar wear from the factory, ran fine.

I have the full size companion to your's, the S-120. It is still flawless in that area after 500+ rounds. My barrel lug that slides through there is also flawless.

I don't really see how firing the gun would cause gouges of that sort, and so I wouldn't expect marks like that from the test firing at the factory.  I would ask them about it and see what they say.

I purchased three Tristars over the past several months. In that same spot, the C-100 and P-100 have light scuff marks on the cerakote,  and my L-120 has a deeper abrasion, but only the cerakote was removed.  My L-120 and C-100 have ~550 rounds through them, and the P-100 has ~400. Based on your pictures, I would be concerned/upset if the metal alloy is gouged, and I wouldn't consider that normal.

None of my Cz's, Tanfoglio's, or Sarsilmaz Pistols have tool marks or deformations on the Frame Barrel Supports.  My Canik/TriStar T-120 does have some very light Mill swirl marks on the inner edge of the Right Frame Barrel Support, but that's about it.

:( While I would agree that those marks are ugly, so long as there are no raised burs on the upper flats of the Frame Barrel Supports, your Pistol should function just fine.  I believe that those marks were made during the manufacture process. Let us know how it does when you get it to the Range!  :)

My C-100 does not have those marks, and I have a number of rounds through it.

JWC is correct except for the marks happening during manufacturing. Those marks occurred during slide cycling.

Those marks occurred during slide cycling.

Just how would that happen? Enlighten us, please!

Spoke with someone at TriStar. Also sent them these hi-res, cropped in pics I took with my dSLR. You can see the damage much better:

UPDATE #1: spoke with TriStar. Agrees that it is abnormal. Had me take it back to Academy. Academy will ship it back to TriStar. Will update once I hear back from TriStar.

I have 2 TriStars and they have no marks like this. I agree that this looks like it happened while it was being manufactured. Even though these rough spots could be smoothed out, you shouldn't have to deal with this since this is a brand new pistol that you've never fired. I believe TriStar will correct this problem for you. They've been very responsive when I contacted them in the past. I would guess that they will give you a new C-100. Let us know how you come out on this.

FINAL UPDATE:
Got a call from Academy today. TriStar replaced the gun! So from returning it to Academy for shipping to back it has been about 10 days. Outstanding customer service on TriStar's part.
Just know that if you have an issue TriStar stands behind their product.

Did you inspect the replacement to make sure it doesn't have the same problem?

Yes! Not a mark on it.
Ran 100 rounds of Federal 115 gr and 30 rounds of Monarch 115 gr steel casing. Ate both no problem though the Federal was more accurate. (http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160228/05653a6e606a839a270a72fb988c4de3.jpg)
