Title: Need info on CZ-83 in 9X18 Mak
Post by: Trebor1415 on August 23, 2002, 12:00:58 PM
Empire Arms is advertising the CZ-83 in 9mm Mak. I've stayed away from the 83 because I didn't want to add another caliber (.380) to my stable. I already shoot 9mm Mak though, and I was thinking that the 83 would make a better carry gun then the Makarov, which is what I use now.

Does anyone have any experience with the 83 in 9mm Mak? Does it use the same mags as the .380? If I can score some .380 Hi-caps, will they work in the 9mm Mak pistol?

Besides Empire Arms, is there any other source for the 83 in 9MM Mak?

Also, I've seen actually handled, or even seen, a CZ-83. Any other info would be helpful. I hear they have very nice triggers, but that is about all I know about them.

 Thanks

Trebor, they share the same exact magazines as the Cz-83 in .380 caliber. The only thing I noticed was the 9mm mak rounds take up a tad more space than the .380s, so a ten round magazine only holds 9 9x18s, and the 13 rounders hold 12.

The other difference is in the barrel. Not only is the barrel a tad larger to accomodate the 9x18 ammo, the Makarov CZ-83 barrel has polygonal rifling. The thing looks as if it is smooth bore, and it cleans up really easily.

The cz83's sights are much easier to see than the PM; the magazine has the new style button release behind the trigger on both sides of the stock. The safety is also ambidextrous. CZ83s are da/sa with no decocker. Speaking of the triggers, they are very nice right out of the box. And they age very well. I have a 1988-built surplus cz83 .380 which has the sweetest trigger I've ever used.

Plastic grip panels have gentle thumb rests on each side and are comfortable righty or lefty (I'm left handed).

There is a dealer with a link here called "CZ Connection" in Georgia who also sells these mak cz83s. If Empire says he has them, then he does.  The supply is limited, so don't wait forever.

Any more questions, just ask. I own CZ83 and Bulgarian PM.

Thanks for the info guys. I'm using a EG Mak as a carry gun right now and I agree that the sights suck. I actually have a set of Novak sights, including a night sight for the front, that a buddy of mine is going to put on my Bulgarian mak for me. Even with better sights, and the Nolan hi-drop safety, I'm still thinking that the 83 might make a better carry gun since it will hold more rounds and have a better mag release.

A couple more questions:

How does the safety operate? Is it cocked and locked like the 75 or a decocker?

What finish should I get? Any advantages to either choice?

 Thanks

Trebor,
I have a 9x18 CZ83 in Satin Nickel.  I'm very happy with the gun.  I've put 400 rounds through it with no problems or failures.  I've been using S&B ammo which I bought from Natchez.  I got 1000 rounds for $6.80/box.  Trigger has been great from round 1 and continues to get better.  It makes a great companion for my 75B and kadet adapter.  Buy it.  You'll have no regrets.  I got mine from CZ Connection.  My wife shoots it very well and she's an inexperienced shooter.  It may be a bit big for a Mak caliber but it fits my small hand real well and is very comfortable to shoot.  It has a regular safety just like the 75 but on both sides along with an ambi mag release.  Good luck!
Tom

Totally cool guns. My '83 MAk has a great trigger, nad
you really have something to take notice of with the
Barnual JHP.

Both of my 83s are nice companions to my other CZs.

Now i just need PTs on my '83 MAK.Kinda wish i had a
glossy blue '83 to go with my 97B-SA.

Hopefully DAN's will get some .380 + P Sentry ammo
in soon.
