Ordered one of these CZ 75 Compacts that are basically an SP-01 Compact. I wanted to get suggestions on upgrades. What would YOU upgrade if you bought one of these (or what will you upgrade if you did already)?

Replace the mainspring with a 13# spring and go shoot the gun.
Take Care

I plan to at least install an extended firing pin and reduced power firing pin spring as well as a reduced power hammer spring and VZ grips. Depending on how the trigger feels, I may install a competition hammer and short reset disco along with a reduced power trigger return spring and floating trigger pin. An 85C trigger may be needed. Maybe night sights or other better sights.

That will make it shoot a lot better.

These are good, keep em coming! I sort of want to just polish it up really nice inside and then shoot it without changes, just to see what it's like. But I have a problem wanting to install all the goodies!

Polishing up all contact points and moving parts will be a first perfect mod for a brand new firearm. While it's apart, that'll be a good time to gut the factory lube, put in some nice clean oil and shoot the pants off it. I'd recommend before ANY mods go into the gun, you at least put a few hundred rds down the pipe as to better inform you of what you do and do not like about the new CZ. As well, and most important, before any mods you should just make sure the weapon functions as designed and there aren't any factory bugs that need to be worked out. If it runs well and goes a few hundred rds without weapon related malfunctions, (ammo and magazine enduced malfunctions don't count) I think you'd have no second guesses about starting to address the things about the firearm you want to change. The trigger, trigger pin, spring, disconnector, firing pin spring, hammer spring, ditch the factory plastic guiderod etc. after a polish, clean, shoot, and then another cleaning, you should address what stands out to you most.

That's the only good reason I've ever heard for holding off on making mods to a gun. I never thought of it that way in terms of CZs since they rarely (in my experience never) have issues requiring return. I have always put a couple of hundred rounds through a new gun while waiting on upgrade parts to arrive so by then I have a pretty good feel for the gun. I never bought into running a thousand rounds or so through a gun with a stiff trigger which could cause one to develop bad habits in the process of compensating for a gun's weaknesses.
-
Good points srREXed. I didn't think of it that way either since my CZ's have always been 100% from day one.
-
Agreed!
I never make modifications to an out of box gun!
I run 3-4-500 rounds through them before changing anything to make sure they are running correctly from the manufacture, if not return them for repair.
-
If there is some minor issue with a new gun that a little tweaking I can do can correct it, I will fix it myself rather than sending it not to be seen for weeks.
-
The hardest part for me is that I love doing the improvements so I rarely have the patience to wait to do at least the polishing...

I was working on my shopping list. Springs and what not add up but then I just have to have the competition hammer! I thought I would try and keep this on the cheap but with the hammer I break $100. Eventually I'll get fiber optic sights and thin aluminum grips, but that just has to wait as this was an unplanned child coming into the family so soon.

I'm going to wait and see how the overall trigger is with just an extended firing pin and reduced power hammer spring before I jump into a new hammer. The last CZ I bought new, the trigger was "good enough" for me. Although it was a stock Shadow I am wondering if CZ is finally making their hammer/sear fit better on all their guns.

My SOP is a hundred round function check and then the CGW Pro Package. Life's too short to put up with a mediocre trigger. YMMV.

Bob, I think that I'm missing something here. Wolff lists the factory standard as 19Lbs. They offer reduced 16Lb, 17Lb and 18Lb mainsprings. Where would you even get a 13Lb mainspring? If you do replace the mainspring with a lighter one, wouldn't you need to install a heavier recoil spring to offset the recoil (assuming that you're going with factory standard ammo and not light reloads) since the recoil spring and mainspring work together to absorb the recoil?
-
CZ Custom has an extended firing pin. Cajun Gun Works has a lightened Firing Pin Spring or you can get their extended firing pin and the lightened firing pin spring. 13# and even less can be ordered and accomplished. As for a heavier recoil spring, check with one of the shops or someone can chime in. I have asked that before and was told that it wasn't an issue with the weight of my recoil spring, but I am not a gunsmith so I don't want to give advice that may not apply to other pistols with different springs. I do have a few different recoil springs on hand though for different loads.

I am going to do CZC Fiber optic sights, a narrowed Shadow hammer from CZC, a CGW Type 2 Disconnector, a CGW Short Reset, VZ Grips, an 85 Combat trigger, and call it good. I've been kicking myself for missing out on the Shadow Line Compacts that came over a year or two ago and this will be my replacement instead of hunting one down and paying big $$$.

You could just remove the firing pin block system and throw in a type 3 disconnector and have it like this shadow.... then instead of a short reset system you could get the reach reduction and have a shorter Double Action pull. Just food for thought if you are going for the pure Shadow copy.

After receiving mine today and shooting it, I plan the following:
1) New hammer, disco, and lighter hammer spring (probably an adjustable sear).
2) Extended firing pin with light spring and new firing pin retaining pin for dry-fire.
3) 85C trigger with RP spring and floating trigger pin.
4) G10 grips

What? No pictures?

Check the other two threads, pics have been posted.

Are you kidding? I don't even have a camera. I don't even have a computer. My 2-year old grandson is working this one for me... ;D

Yeah, I posted a bunch to the other two threads. Dups on both, don't wanna triple up on the same pics. Here's one though.

After dry firing mine that's about the same list of upgrades. Thought I would try it without doing the competition hammer but the SA break is pretty bad and I don't care to mess with it. Easier to order the good stuff.

Mine's not horrid - I'm just spoiled by CGW parts.
-
I hate to say it, but I rushed to judgment in my haste to let others here on this forum know my first impressions. After dry-firing it SA about three hundred times and then cleaning and lubing it for the first time (yes, I shot it before cleaning/lubing it) the SA is really not bad at all. A tad long but it smoothed right out and with a lighter hammer spring I think it will be acceptable in the short term. It still cams back a very little but it feels lighter and smoother now.

Good to know, I'll have to keep dry firing mine while I wait for my package from CGW. Mine is still pretty gritty after about 100 trigger pulls.
