Title: Who has cut and rethreaded their scorpion barrel?
Post by: e1911 on December 18, 2016, 11:51:08 AM
I have a new scorpion pistol and bought the hkparts 3 lug adapter.  I'm not thrilled how it fits and sticks out so far and am wondering if I should have the barrel cut and properly threaded for 1/2 x 28?  How much would need to be cut off to properly thread it?  I assume after cutting and adding the 3 lug adapter it would still stick out past the hand guard enough to shoot without a can?

Thoughts and pics appreciated.

The 18x1 threads can be turned down to 1/2x28 while leaving enough 18x1 threads to use the retaining nut for the handguard still.

You would lose zero barrel length doing this since the 18x1 threads can be turned to 1/2x28. Nothing needs to be shortened barrel wise.

Using a 1/2x28 adapter would save you about an inch on length vs the 18x1 adapters.

Lugs would be in front of the handguard so no issue using or servicing them.

This is what it would look like:

I had mine threaded to 1/2-28 by a local smith, basically the same as pictured above.  I think it's the best way to go and a much better solution than messing around with adapters.

I have the 2016 model but the 1/2 x 28 is terrible in terms of depth.  Still rethread?

If the threading were damaged, you'd be able to chase it with a tap,

With a die...  If you try to chase it with a tap, you will bleep up your barrel.   ;)

If you do need to run a die over your threads, maybe use one of these; they are designed to repair existing threads, rather than cut new ones:

I sent mine to eMGunslinger about a month ago.  Cutting to around 6.5", just behind the flare for the barrel nut, rethreading to 1/2 x 28, and adding a 3-lug.  Should be perfect with my HB Carbine handguard.  Will take pics when it gets back.

Going the same route as earlan357. Haven't even started my Form1 yet, though, so I've got plenty of time to consider every detail

Can the barrel be cut/threaded with the fixation attached?

If you do not go with a suppressor it seems more muzzle accessories are available for the 18 M vs 1/2 x 28.??

I like mine with the 18mm thread, Silencerco adapter, and Obsidian silencer.
Granted I have not fired it yet with the Obsidian, but screwing it all together, I like it.
The Obsidian may be a bit long, and I now believe the Omega 9K would be ideal.
Guess I just like the original design with the 18mm threads, a bit beefier than the 1/2 x 28.

I got the 1/2 x 28 for my micro/k conversion (the guy in NH)  In hindsight I think I would have got the 18M.  If you don't run a high end suppressor, I think there is more muzzle stuff for the 18M.  I saw a "Kaw Valley" muzzle brake for a good price.  Not sure about that product.  I bought a knurled barrel nut for the end, which works on Glocks too..  I am trying to keep the CZ compact, so I am not going to pay $300 for the Micro/k conversion, anf then add 2 inches back to it.  Now I guess someone has a pre cut 4 inch barrel? and another short aluminum hand guard is out?  Who makes that? I forget??

Class 3 machining cut mine to 5" and attached a griffin three lug. I love it!

That looks great.  I am jealous.  If the "hearing protection" legislation goes through, people will go on a buying spree, manufacturers, after market suppliers and gunsmiths, machine shops will benefit too.  Some of the community colleges could train new people to in the gunsmith trade, etc.  The tax on SBRs is also due for a change.  Seniors, disabled and others should be able to have a stock on their firearm without paying a big $200 tax.

I had the guy I used in NH cut a barrel I bought on eBay, and I retained the original barrel and guard, but will I ever convert it back?

Thanks, John A. I'll likely go ahead and buy an aftermarket shorty barrel with 1/2 x 28 threads for my suppressor. SBR Form 1 has already been submitted for that barrel length anyway. Price difference should be insignificant

Mine was cut with the other common 9mm thread pitch,  1/2 x 36.

Primarily because this is now a host for a Gemtech MK9K i have with that thread pattern.

Yankee Hill Machine makes flash hiders and brakes in this pattern, but I just use a thread protector.
