Title: Cautionary tail from the village idiot
Post by: Atl_Matt on January 02, 2017, 07:34:54 PM
Ok, generally I'm pretty informed, mechanically inclined and firearm safety focused... but I'm working on updating my Bren SBR with new parts - one of which are some nice, new keymod rails. I pulled the original rails off the check fit on the new ones before having them Cerakoted to match my FDE Bren. With a new Eotech in tow, headed to the range Saturday to get the Eotech sighted in. I was in a hurry so I simply left the rails - and screws off - didn't need them and the new rails are due in next week. No biggie - I thunk ( this is what village idiots do from time to time right before they take steps to self select out of the gene pool ;-).

So, there I was with my very tacticool Bren SBR, ready to put the first rounds down range, mag in and as I go to charge the gun, my trigger pack simply falls out of the back of the gun. Those of you who have atually read the manual are laughing no doubt as basically the entire barrel, trunnion, lower rail are now sliding back and forth freely in the gun since in removing the rails I apparently removed the barrel mounting screws. I sheepishly unload the gun and thank my lucky stars I didn't chamber and fire a round. Lesson learned and this village idiot is signing off now.

Anyone contemplating a no rails Bren shoot probably needs to think again. Best, Matt

Wow, that was close one. Glad you didn't get hurt and learned a lesson. I'm going to go read my manual tomorrow just for kicks now.

Most everyone has probably done something similar.  Good learning experience, too.

Sometimes, it's easy to miss that "this piece not only holds this piece in but also these other two as well."

Anyone whose take a gun apart (or anything else) only to have unexpected parts fall in your lap/on the floor knows what I mean.

The day I brought my Colt Series 80 Government Model home I sat down in the floor and field stripped it.  Then I started taking everything out of the frame and slide to wipe them off and lube them properly (no way to know how long it had lain on a shelf (distributor, shipping, store) before I lucked into it).  When I turned the frame upside down some pieces I'd never laid eyes on with any other 1911 I've owned fell out (the firing pin block parts).  Then I had to figure out how to get them back in there.  Years later I took them out anyway.  My other three Colts don't have those parts and since I don't have a way to drop it muzzle down on a hard surface from 5 or 10 feet in the air there's not much need for those parts anyway.  As they say, your mileage may vary.

We've all done something stupid - it goes with the territory.  Glad it ended well.

could have been worse, we have all done similar things
