Title: Can't decide which 10mm to go.
Post by: biozzcx on April 21, 2006, 07:46:33 AM
my options are:  witness match, witness limited, and witness hunting in blue finish.  the main purpose I want for is deer hunting, plus home defense, and target shooting.  I don't need another Dan Wesson in 10 mm, since i have one of Patriot in 45.  the alternative is to have a Dan Wesson revolver in 44 mag/445 super mag.  Can you guys who have experience with above listed guns provide some inputs for me?
thanks in advance.

If you're thinking of hunting, check your state regulations.  Some states have barrel length regulations.  Were it me, based on what you want, I would go with the Witness Hunter: you've got a combat arm in the DW, and the Witness has had several good write-ups as a field/hunting gun.  I think the SuperMag is a good revolver, but might be overkill for what you want.  That's just my 2 cents.

The Hunter to me is a bit of a strange bird.  The muzzle thingy is not a compensator, just a weight.  So what you have is a Stock in SA with no chrome finish and a weight on the end.  I don't see what that gains, rather it seems to lose many features.  10mm is certainly controllable without weighting down the front of the gun, and the chrome finish is better for durability.  One also has many more holster issues with the Hunter.  The longer barrel may add a little velocity out to the end of the slide, but I doubt the space in the weight does much.  Of course it is setup for a scope mount but Marc Galli indicated to me that the mounts are less than ideal in configuration.  Eric Grauffel is using his own mount of that gives you any idea.

I would suggest you get a Match.  It gives you a longer barrel than a base gun, most of the Hunter features, chrome frame, and costs much less.  A Limited would give you a fancier gun, but really is more IPSC oriented.  You could run it for that too if you wanted.  I see no reason why 10mm loaded down to the same specs as the 40 most IPSC shooters use would not be fine for competition.  In fact I have long thought it might have advantages in terms of feeding and lower pressure (less recoil).  I need to experiment with my Match in a match one of these days.

Grayrider,  the Match model comes with a 5'' barrel.  EAA has 6'' match barrels as parts. will this barrel fit in the Match model? i have not checked with wild life pepole yet, not sure if there is any barrel length requirement in MO. i love two tune guns, the Match model looks really nice.

I would think it would fit fine.  The Match does not have a bull barrel like the Stock or Limited.  Despite that it is easily my most accurate Witness.  I don't really get that given that the other guns have extra steps taken to improve accuracy.  It may be that the Match has a higher grade barrel, or I just got lucky.

Sooo... can a 6" match barrel be dropped into my run-of-the-mill witness 10mm?

That should work fine.  Alex Olenski used to sell those for that purpose.  I have not tried it but would assume the dimensions have not changed.  You never know with Tanfoglio though.
