Title: Caniks in competition?
Post by: noway on June 05, 2017, 12:54:22 PM
Does anyone shoot their Canik in IDPA, etc.? On a whim I took mine to a USPSA match and found it reasonably accurate. The major issue would be the ease (or lack thereof) of mag changes. Any simple suggestions?

I do like showing up with my budget clone, and many are carrying pricey race guns. Of course I get smoked, but that's on me...   :P

I've shot my TriStar/Canik T120 and my Canik TP9V1 in a few USPSA practice Matches and both did very well, provided I did my part.
Magazine Changes went smooth for both Pistols.

I run my P120 occasionally, they are on the uspsa production list. However, they don't fit in the box with the factory 19 round magazines. The stock sights are also pretty pathetic IMO.

Shoot in Limited Hi-Cap Minor Class.

That is what I go with when I use it. You could always get some 17 rounders and you would be good to go.

If your mags are sticking try gently sanding the ridges on either side of the magwell with emory cloth or a strip of fine(ish) sandpaper wrapped around the end of a paint stir stick, only as much as needed until mags drop freely. Be sure to clean the magwell afterwards. Hope this helps  :)

I already have several SP-01 18 rounders. It's kind of stupid to load them down just to shoot Production or Limited 10. Thanks for the suggestion!

A little sanding might help too. I always use 1000 grit, so doubt I will remove too much metal...

Hmmm, I made the assumption you were shooting one of the newer polymer framed Caniks, if I'd known you meant metal frame
I would have kept my mouth shut lol

S-120, sorry. But there's always smoothing to be done...  ;)

As long as the gun/magazines have been reliable, I would say go for it!

Like the old saying goes, "It's the Indian, not the Arrow!"  I honestly don't think it matters what brand you shoot, as long as the gun runs.  Watching guys fumble with double feeds and stovepipes and poor ejection can be devastating for a competitor.

I just purchase a P120 and was wondering what fiber rear and front set up do you guys have?
My gun is shooting low, so I want to replace both sights.
I decided on this rear sight

and this matching front sight

If you haven't checked out Dawson Precision for a sight set, I would encourage you to do so. There is a F/O set listed for the SP 01 for $89.00. You mentioned that your pistol is shooting low. Dawson will guaranty POA=POI in the sets. If you need to adjust the POI they will replace the front sight free as long as you supply the data that they require to send the correct sight. You will not be disappointed.

So the SP01 sight are a direct swap?

That's what I have heard. If you hang around for a week or so, I will report if it worked.

I haven't find "one place" to go to get informations about accessories for the P120, here or anywhere else.
I can gather few bits and pieces from people talking about the L120 or C100 or even EAA Witness.
Even CGW has limited informations and parts, even so we are very lucky to have them. Are the Tristar and EAA (Tanfoglio) so small in the US market that nobody, except CGW, interested in getting into the after market parts?
The magazine fit is a prime example of that debacle. People all over are asking for magazine compatibility for their newly purchase handgun, and JWC007 is often there to point them in the right direction, but few of those people come back with the results of their tests and findings. So, the same questions get asked over and over again.

I don't really see the magazine situation as a debacle since i have two Canik made compacts, being the T100 and the Shark C and my P120.The longer mags for the P will operate in the compacts. I have factory issue mags as well as Meggar and CZ s mags and they work fine.
As issued after a few hundred rounds I'm extremely satisfied with the operation on my Caniks. May go for some sights on the P120 but not a priority.

Finally got the internals and feed ramp polished, new springs and Dawson Precision front FO sight. This is one fun gun to shoot. Have played in IDPA and USPSA and having a blast. Now if my technique were only better... ;)
