here in kalifornia the handgun roster means only very few models are available
http://certguns.doj.ca.gov/safeguns.asp
those not on the roster even if only because of different caliber or color finish can be obtained vary rarely and only at insane prices, used.
Wanting to have an sp-01 or shadow in .40 the only option seems buying a 9 and converting
I would not mind of course getting a 40 slide and barrel for this purpose (+mags) but
What is necessary to convert the frame ?

There are a few things you can do. The bolt face on the 9 is not the same as the 40. The 40 SA barrel is the same diameter as the 9mm SPO1.
1. Have the bolt face widened to accommodate the 40 by a gun smith/machinist.
2. Buy a 40 cal BSA and upgrade to target level performance, get an SP01 9mm barrel and mags, adjust recoil spring weight for your loads.
3. Buy an entire top end complete with slide, barrel and all the rest and then have one frame and two top ends.
The BSA frame is essentially the same as the SP01 except for the extended front.
I use a 9mm in my 40 often and the 40 extractor works just fine.

I believe the problem is the slide (serial number). The 75B in 40 is on the roster, I wonder if the slide from it would fit the SP-01?

The only S/N that matters is the one on the frame (since that part is the firearm under Federal Law). The slide by itself is not a firearm, so it shouldn't be affected by Kalifornistan's bizarre laws.

hmm
maybe I should clarify
is there an issue with putting a complete sp-01 40 slide on a 9mm sp-01 frame ?
if so, how does one get around it?
-
A complete 40 slide may or may not fit a 9mm sp01 frame without tweaking. Based on my experience trying to get a 40 SP01, in CA anyway...
My 40 75B slide fit the sp01, and even worked with the 9mm barrel in it, but when I would try the complete assembly (.40 barrel, slide, springs) on the SP01 frame, it would bind up.
I think I just need to relieve the frame in a couple spots, but have not really figured out where yet. I needed to do sone polishing on the SP01 frame to get my Kadet kit to fit, so my guess is the tolerances are just a bit tight on the one I got.

Sorry Senior Brain Fart, (SBF for short)! You're right the serial number is on the frame not the slide. :-\

I have gone from 40 frame to 9 upper with complete interchangeability. I cannot think of any reason it would not work the other way.
All four of the uppers will interchange with either of the two frames.
Second from top is BSA 40 with SP01 9 top end. The slide has custom sight cut with adjustable.

Mine CZ75B 40SW frame will accept any of CZ75 9mm slides, but 40SW slide will not fit in the 9mm frames. The locking lug is wider.
All frames also accept Kadet kits with no problem.

Any problem with relieving the 9mm frames to accept the wider locking lugs?

Why? I don?t even shooting it anymore. Geting ready to sell it. Never liked this caliber and have many 9mm to shoot.

Stuart has a Tac Sport slide(no barrel) for sale in the classified forum. There's a used TS .40 barrel on GB right now. A long slide .40 on an SP-01 frame wood be neat.

Ha!
Yes, lots of folks dropping 40 right now.
Don't know the OP's reasons. I'd like to have a 40 da/sa with a rail. Right now, my .40 75B does the trick with me wearing a headlamp, but I would like to get a light more forward.
Personal preferences I guess.

well it's certainly not because of some silly fashion trend
the reasoning is simple
here in kalifornia...
the high capacity advantage of the 9mm is nullified with 10 round mag limit
therefore it makes sense (to me) to get the most out of the lonely 10 rounds and in a larger pistol like the sp-01 which makes recoil a non-issue 40 is a bleepcat.
I have a P-01 for 9mm anyway which seems more size/weight efficient for the caliber - again considering the capacity restrictions

I've always felt the same. I also like the .40 with lead free projectiles, another CA specific issue...
