Title: If not a 9mm, what other pistol cartridges do you love?
Post by: Scarlett Pistol on November 29, 2017, 12:29:55 PM
The thread I started to ask about other pistol manufacturers outside of CZ has been really interesting and is still alive. I was thinking about that and how the majority of CZ pistols are in 9mm. Furthermore, when I started shooting pistols I started reloading quickly to afford the hobby and I stuck exclusively with 9mm for a long time!

SO, if not 9mm, what other pistol cartridges do you love, why, and what do you use them for? What cartridges do you really want to try?

Me?

Not long after posting that other thread I brought in a NON CZ pistol into my family. A Tanfoglio Witness Hunter in 10mm!!!! Yeah, yeah, ya'll can make a good argument that this pistol barely counts as NOT being a CZ, BUT 10mm is entirely different than 9mm! To be clear, just 2 years ago I hated shooting 45 ACP, but since putting in some purposeful practice in the last year and a half-ish my focus has broken away from recoil and I can enjoy these larger cartridges.

That being said I LOVE 10mm! Powerful, accurate, plenty of velocity, tons of bullet weights and designs available, and just a fun time! Furthermore, 10mm seems to have a cult following, much like CZ is known for (people seem to be referencing us when they say such things). Good group of guys on the 10mm forum with lots of helpful information!

I got the pistol chambered in this cartridge for bear protection during a family trip where I couldn't open carry something like a 45-70 rifle. Now, I use it for a woods gun where I live and I have been practicing to use it for pistol hunting. Maybe I'll save up some brass and use it for a USPSA match just because (I just need to find someone who makes a freaking holster for this thing!).

I am getting worried though... With my 10mm and 9mm cartridges and pistols spending so much along time together a barrel chambered in 9x25 Dillon and the reloading equipment may just appear one day!!!  O0 Can't wait for that to happen!

45ACP , .357 Sig and 10mm

I am going in the opposite direction.  I really like my FN FiveSeven, which I picked up after I got a P90.  Down side is the round is not cheap.  On the upside, even though they will not confirm it, the Secret Service uses both the FN FiveSeven pistol and the FN P90.  But if the truth be known the Secret Service really does not have much of a problem with bears.  I have to say shooting both the FiveSeven and the P90 (really the PS90 which is full auto and has a short barrel) almost seems like cheating compared to anything else but a .22.  Easy on the ears and for old weak white guys like me easier to hold steady and deal with the recoil.

My favorite cartridge besides 9mm is the 10mm. I feel that between the two they cover anything that could be required in an autopistol. My 10mm launcher of choice is also the EAA Witness.

I'm also really interested in the high velocity 9mm cartridges like 9x23 Winchester or .38 supercomp (loaded to high pressures). I think its cool to see what a pistol can do at long range and these cartridges essentially add a good 50-75 yards of effective range compared to a standard 9mm.

I have the popular ones 9mm, 45, 357/38, and 22.

To be honest I almost exclusively shoot the 9s but my second favorite has to be 22.

45 ACP in 1911 for paper punching. 9mm for multiple steel targets.

I like the 9mm for defense.....but I really enjoy shooting the 22 lr. and I have some accurate pistols and rifles that chamber it. Th 17 Winchester is another

I think the future is in smaller high powered super fast 22 and 17's

I was a .45 acp guy for over 30 years.  Shot it, carried it, worked with it, reloaded for it and swore by it.

I could say the same for the .357 magnum and the .44 magnum.

The .22 and my Ruger Mk1 5.5" is special to me, too.

A few years ago I got a .357 SIG in a not very accurate pistol.  I like the cartridge but neither of the pistols I've bought that shoot it are up to my accuracy standards (or to my CZs accuracy standards).  If CZ made a .357 SIG pistol I'd have to buy it/try it.

While I carry a CZ in .40 S&W that was an "accident" that turned out to be one of the most accurate pistols I've every owned.  I bought the P07 in .40 to get it rebarreled to .357 SIG only to find out that wasn't as simple/easy as just buying a .357 SIG barrel for it (like I could if it were a Glock, an M&P, a SIG, etc.)

The most accurate semi auto pistol I've ever owned is my P09 9MM.  These days I hardly shoot it.

I know this is supposed to be a discussion/thread on handgun calibers but I find I carry what is accurate and reliable, but those pistols are not in a caliber I'd prefer to carry.  The .40 is okay.  I carry my P07 just about every time I go somewhere in the car/truck (went to Cabela's today and got some small pistol primers and bullets.)

If I could only have one semi auto cartridge/pistol it would be my Colt 1911 in .45 acp.

If I could get a P07 in .357 SIG then it might replace the 1911.

Sorry to break into this thread but how do you compare your cz P09 to your P07...I have a P07 and was thinking about buying the P09 for target.......is the P07 close to the p09 in accuracy?

I am curious to hear M1A4ME. I know Joe L thinks the world of his P09 and then got a P07 that lived up to his expectations based on the P09. He shoots bullseye and his posts have some great footage and pics of the P07. If you go search through his posts you'll find tons of his shooting and his thoughts on the P07, to compliment what M1A4ME has to say.

Thanks for the heads up, my CZ's are not replaceable but I've heard so many good things about the P09 and since I love the P07, I'd be up for the P09 if it offered considerably more accuracy.....

I reload 9mm, 38 special, and .45 ACP.

I carry .32 acp and .22mag.

I may add a 10mm, but I think I have most of the pistol bases covered.

The only other pistol caliber I have is the classy 45 auto.  Shoot it through a Sig 1911 nitron tactical.  I want to sell it but it keeps holding on because it?s just an easy shooter and can?t bring myself to let it go.

If I were to head into another pistol caliber I?d go 10mm.  It is currently what I consider to be the best candidate for the old school philosophy of a pistol and rifle using the same Ammo as I could get a glock and a Kriss carbine and use common ammo and mags, then optimistically I think with some handload work ups that it could be a potent 300 yd carbine and a pistol that could deliver a thump at closer range.  I?ve got a lot of time to think to myself

Had lots of different calibers but once I started reloading focused on 9mm and 45ACP. Still have a Ruger Blackhawk in 357 but use the 9mm cylinder at the range. During the ammo shortage I noticed I could always find 40 so I have a 40P tucked away and a stash of ammo - just in case. Also have cz83 that is a safe queen. Not sure why I keep except I love the grips on it.

I always want a revolver in 30 carbine. If I find a deal I might have to give it whirl just for grins.

I started years ago with .40 S&W but it was getting expensive and hard to find...so I decided to "standardize" on NATO calibers i.e 9mm for pistols and 5.56 for rifle.
Roll forward to present day; my second choice to shoot is .22LR (pistol and rifle)...good ammo is relatively cheap and accurate. Then lastly .380 ACP for CCW, not so much for range outings.

10mm ........... I had a DW Silverback, STI Nitro, and Sig P220 all in 10mm......all were excellent!!!   In an attempt to scale down an ever growing collection and variation in rounds those made the chopping block along with other firearms, in lieu of other comparable calibers.  I still "struggle" with not trying to replace them  :-\    As far as use, my intent was for outdoors...hunting, hiking, camping, as well as range.....not so much for personal defense, its a bit too much of a round for populated areas IMHO  ;)

There's no need to struggle any longer.... You deserve getting a 10mm again! Here's my baby to help you along in going and getting another. The guns (.40 S&W P07 and 9MM P09) are more accurate than I am.  I need two things.  More practice and much, much more exercise.  I'm out of shape and it's my fault.  I get tired much too quickly at the range.

My best groups have been with the P09 9MM.  My .40 S&W is close, but not exactly like the P09 on paper.  You have to realize that you can buy two identical pistols and one will be more, or less, accurate than the other one.  I have a P09 in .40 S&W that is not as accurate as the .40 S&W P07 or the 9MM P09.  It just isn't, from the factory, the equal of the P07.  Could it be with different loads?  Maybe.  I've not spent the time to try to develop a .40 S&W load just for that P09.  If I decide, some day, to sacrifice a .40 S&W CZ pistol and spend the money for a .357 SIG conversion, it would be that P09.

May not be great by target/competition comparison but so far above what my Glock, XDM and M&P pistols (and the lone Browning) I own and used to shoot that all those guns "live" in a safe these days.

The first target is the P07 at 12 yds. with Nosler 135 grain HPs over a charge of Blue Dot (lots of BANG, lots of FLASH and the empties fly 12 or 15 ft. if I don't get close to the screen between the tables so the empties can bounce off it and fall near me).  There are two holes not with the other 11 and those are my fault.  I called the one straight down (knew it would be low when the hammer dropped) and the one low/left was me chasing a bumble bee that flew across the front of the target (sort of a reflex from years ago).

After seeing what this pistol will do, I wouldn't change it to .357 SIG if it was cheap and easy to do so.

This next picture was the P09 9MM.  I shot the first two shots, couldn't figure out why I only had one hole.  Couldn't figure out how I missed the whole darn target.  Shot the third shot and the hole was enough bigger to see that it was now a 3 shot hole.  Then I got the shakes and really struggled to force myself to take the next shot.  Took several tries as it just would not get "good enough" to squeeze the trigger.  Never steady enough, never lined up just right, never "good enough" to squeeze the trigger.  I don't think I took a picture of the whole 20 shot group as it was ugly after I gave up and just started squeezing the trigger.  I've never just fallen apart like that before.  I just took too much time thinking about how awesome that group was going to be and that can be a bad thing.

Both targets were offhand and 12 yds. with iron sights and both were the first trip to the range with each pistol.  Now, with the RMR on the P09 those 115 grain hollow points strike POA, exactly.

How can you not like a gun that shoots well?  Regardless of the caliber.

I tend to be a "Variety is the Spice of Life" kinda guy.

I'm currently shooting:
.22 LR
.32 ACP
.32 S&W Long
.32-20
.380
9mm
.38 S&W
.38 Short Colt
.38 Special
.357 Magnum
.40 S&W
.45 Colt

The most attention these days goes to .22, .38 Special, and .40 S&W.

The only handguns/calibers that have gone down the road were a .327 Blackhawk and a .223 Encore.  The .327 was a 3 or 4" Blackhawk that would have been amazing if it was a 6-7" Single Six and the Encore just didn't get used and I needed to get baseball gear for a 12 and 7 year old.

I am a big fan of the .45. Something about the push of the recoil that appeals to me. If they ever instituted a nationwide mag limit I might just go back to carrying my Commander.

I have two 1911 .45's and a Glock 21 .45 so I Like .45's

I have 5 S&W .38/.357 so I like them too

I have three .41 magnums so I say I like that one also.
Oooh the 41 Mag! That's a nifty cartridge I haven't seen mentioned yet.

In my original post I forgot one of my absolute favorites the 22TCM9R shot out of my CZ clone the Rock Island Mapp which uses CZ 75 mags just a blast to shoot.
I didn't realize that they offered their CZ clone chambered in 22TCM9R. How is that to shoot? What's recoil like? Do you reload, and if so, how are costs and how is it dealing with the necked cartridge? Accuracy?

I was an early adopter of the comprimise round, .40 S&W and still like it today.  A bit more secure financially, I also love 9mm (all my CZs are nines!) and 45 Auto. I will eventually rid myself of .380.

For varmints, I shoot more .22 WMR than .22LR now a days, though back in the beginning, I excercied my Marlin model 60 with a whole lot of .22LR love.  It seemed to do just fine on varmints, too, but I tend to grab the Single Six with the WMR cylinder installed as my "go to" for that purpose.

All my handguns are 9 mm except one. 44 mag.
This way I have no confusion when it comes to ammo.

I'm fairly consertive

.22 LR
5.7x28
.32 ACP
7.62x25
.380
9mm
.38 Special
.357 Magnum
.40 S&W
.45 Colt

I've had a few others but I cut back ...  I liked the 10mm & 44mag but I'm mostly a paper puncher and they don't do anything any better than the others I've got so they were the first to go and I can see the 5.7x28, .32 ACP, 7.62x25, .380, 38 Special, & 40 S&W fading away in a few years

The Mapp clone from Rock Island is an absolute blast mild recoil ,it 's like shooting a 22 I could shoot it all day!. Now when you shoot other people want to know what kind of hand cannon you are shooting because of the noise and large flash. I always wear my electronic hearing gear when I shoot it . I use it out to 100 yards too. When I bought it I payed $410.00 ,know Buds has one on sale in the other handgun section for about $380.00. It will use CZ 75 and Mecgar mags I usually use Mecgar 19 rounders. One last thing everyone will want try it. The last time I bought ammo it ran me $360.00 for a 1000 rounds so it's like shooting 45 ACP cost wise. Still I love best fun gun that you can own ,everyone in your house easily be able to hit the target with it.

I once tried to consolidate to the 9mm, 5.56/.223, and .22lr cartridges.  That didn't last long.

Current:

.357 Magnum may make a return soon.

For me it?s in this priority based on use

45 acp- S&W 625; DW spc cdr, S&W 1911e series
38 spl- GP 100 WC II, S&W 627
44 spc believe it or not. Love it in my S&W M24-3 snub nose N frame.

I once tried to consolidate to the 9mm, 5.56/.223, and .22lr cartridges.  That didn't last long.

Current:

  • .22 lr
  • .22 WMR
  • 9mm Luger
  • .40 S&W
  • .45 ACP
  • .38 Special / .38 Special +P
  • .44 Remington Magnum

.357 Magnum may make a return soon.

Although I fully understand the logic of consolidation, it seems like that takes some of the fun away.

Handgun cartridges -

.22LR (one requires Standard Velocity)
7.65 Browning (aka .32 ACP)
7.65x21 (aka .30 Luger)
7.63x25 (aka .30 Mauser)
7.62x25 (Tokarev)
.38 S&W
.38 S&W Special
.357 Magnum
9x17 (aka .380)
9x18 (Makarov)
9x19 (Parabellum / Luger)
.40 S&W
.44 magnum
.45 ACP
.45 Colt

(I guess that means I still need 10mm Auto, .327 Federal and .454 Casull)

Long before I started shooting 9mm, I shot .45 ACP. I suspect that is the case for most guys who were actively shooting in the early 90s, shooting USPSA.

I shot a 1911, and a Glock 21 heavily during that time period, plus my work guns were .45s.

Also, I was always a .44 mag fan on the revolver side. In fact the .44 magnum is the first revolver I bought for myself when I became old enough, and I have never been without one since then.

These days I shoot more considerably 9mm than 45, but still consider the .45 a favorite. The 9mm is just simply practical for my applications.

It is pretty hard to go wrong with a basic 9mm service auto, a 5" .44 Magnum, and a 1911 .45.

All that said, I also shoot a fair bit of .38 Special, since I always have a J Frame in my pocket.

Well, I applaud your 'thought' of consolidating ammo to 3 or 4 solid choices. I like to shoot a LOT, so I've weaned my collection down to 22LR(HV), 9mm, 45ACP and 357Magnum. All these calibers are readily available at competitive bulk pricing, so I can mix 'em up and shoot 400-500 rounds a week without the wife noticing I'm denting the charge card.  O0
Meanwhile....I've been lusting after a Henry lever-action in 357Mag to accompany my S&W 627-5 8-round 357 revolver. Yeah, I know, a 44Magnum Henry would be even sweeter, but I love the versatility of my 357 S&W Revolver.

.45 ACP, I got a H&K UMP Clone with a Osprey Silencer on it and love how smooth and quiet it shoots!

In no particular order

.22 LR
.380 ACP
.38 Special/.38 Special +P
.357 Magnum
.45 ACP
.45 Super

However, mostly I shoot 9mm and .45 ACP these days, and mostly 9mm.

44 Mag and Special shoot an 11mm bullet and The Spanish Army fielded an 11mm rifle (AKA 11mm Mauser and 43 Spanish) at one time.

45 acp and I liked the feel of the 22 tcm, not particularly the ballistic performance.
