Title: Can you rest your strong thumb on the decocker lever on a P-09 when you shoot?
Post by: Mifune326 on January 23, 2018, 12:58:53 AM
I just picked up my new (leftover model from late 2014!)  P-09 today!   So happy!   As an old 1911 shooter, I like to rest my strong thumb on the safety lever when I shoot.   My new P-09 has the safety levers installed, and I can kind of get away with resting my thumb on the lever.   However, I'd really like to install the decocker.   Does anyone shoot with their strong thumb on the decocker lever and had success doing so, or does the pistol decock to DA under recoil when you do so?

Thanks!

Chris

Sounds like a recipe for an occasional accidental decocking for sure. Lol
It takes a fair amount of travel to decock though so who knows.

Given the amount of travel required, you?d really have to be trying hard to decock, I?d say.

Of course, the best way to find out is s to try it ;-)

Well, I guess I'll just have to give it a try! ;D

Thank you for your quick replies and the info!

Also, the lever pivots at the rear... which is where your thumb would rest. My off hand and strong side thumb are generally all over that lever when shooting and I've never decocked accidentally.

If you don't go out of your way to decock it, it simply wont.

Another old 1911 shooter here that shoots them pretty much the same way.

You shouldn't have any issues. I use a very high ride grip and put my strong thumb on top of the decocker. The pivot point on it is at a point that you shouldn't inadvertently activate the decocker. I've got fairly large hands (wear XL-XXL gloves) and I have not once decocked my P07 by accident, only when I meant to do it.

Excellent info!  Thank you everyone.  I'll definitely switch it out and give it a shot.  Based on what everyone has said, I don't think i'll have any issues.  This forum is awesome, best forum going.  Thanks all!

As a 1918 sized thumb safety shooter, I don't think there is enough meat on the P-09 to rest your thumb on.

Flick the bleep thing off and shoot, there's no time to rest! O0

I agree Angel, there's not a whole lot of real estate on the safety lever to rest your thumb on.  I'd prefer the decocker so I'm gonna give that a go.   Put a quick 100 rounds through my new P-09 today and absolutely love it.  Very accurate and extremely ergonomic (I have large hands but went with the Medium backstrap) just like my 75B Omega and P-10c.   This one might be my favorite though.  Big and heavy enough to soften the recoil.  It's a winner.  Love it!
