Title: Poor man's "hardwood" grips
Post by: ireallydontknow on February 08, 2018, 11:33:36 AM
Just wanted to confirm with ya'll that Pachmayr laminate grips CAN be dyed with Fiebings leather dye. All the threads from other forums seem to say that laminate won't hold dye, but no one seems to have tried it before. Here I used the Chocolate brown color applied with a Qtip to both sides of the grip. Initially, I thought it would seep through easier from the back, but it seems that the outside holds the dye just as easily. No prep work needed. The cool thing is that once it is dry, it appears to be gun solvent proof. Drying took only 5 minutes as the dye is alcohol based. I have tried RemOil, Ballistol, and Hoppes #9 and the dye is not coming off. However, rubbing alcohol does seem to take dye off as well as whatever finish is on the surface.

Below is a comparison of the grips with and without dye. It isn't full on brown, but it does take the edge off of that garish red tone.

For $10 after rebate, I have to say these grips look pretty nice now. I might just keep these instead of getting the CGW aluminum ones.
