A local pawn/gun store I was in today had a model 612 pump shotgun(guy at the store said it was a new gun). It was the home defense version with 18.5? barrel (no pistol grip). The gun had a price tag of $399 out the door. I?m a little worried about the fact that the gun was only in production for two years before being discontinued, so figured I would ask here if the gun is a quality choice for home protection. Is the price fair? And is the gun reliable? Or should I stick to a good old Remington 870 or Mossberg 500?

I bought one of these 4 years ago, have shot the snot out of it and it hasn't batted an eye (so far). Mostly CQ rapid practice with cheap bird shot but a fair amount of sessions with #4 buck (which is what stays in it, cruiser ready by the night stand) as well as several 25-40 yrd runs with rifled slugs.
$399 is high IMO - I won't say what I paid for mine brand new from Bud's; it'd make you weep but... that was then and this is now.
