Title: Here is a 9mm round that I picked off the ground at a 2-gun shoot - what is it?
Post by: Dan_69GTX on July 23, 2018, 09:27:26 PM
I found this on the ground when picking up brass.  I've no idea who made it and what it is - any idea?  It is aluminum and ?? - whatever it is, is non magnetic and not brass...so I'm guessing stainless.  I'll grind on it after I take it apart to see if it sparks.

Hmm, somewhere recently I vaguely remember reading something about a two-piece 9mm Luger case.  If it was here on the forum,  someone else may fill us in.
Weird.

It's a neat concept. I think they would be excellent for reloading. But the cost is what prevents me from using them. They're just too expensive IMO.

They require a special set of dies for reloading which the manufacturer only sells and the cases also require lubrication before resizing even though the special dies are carbide.
Looks like an interesting design if nothing else but I don't think I'll be dumping my gazillion brass cases anytime soon.

Thanks for the info!

Wow, whoever shot them did a GREAT job at picking up their "brass".

I'd never shoot them at a competition or range.  I'd never find most of them.  One time a guy had his rifle brass marked and it was near impossible to find only "his" brass.

Yup. I agree - I'll stick with the "free" brass I can get at the range or from other folks I shoot with - none of them reload.  I've tried to get a few to, but they said it is too cheap to buy commercial ammo and not worry about it.  I can't convince them to try different brands to see what shoots best in their gun, yet they complain when they miss.....oh well....   I've even showed them pics of my targets with my different loads as well as before reloading and different brands I tried so they can see the group size difference.

Very interesting.

It's really too bad they don't make all of them this way - just to make picking up the cases with a magnet possible.  I'm old - and do not like getting down to pick up my brass. LOL

I have several of these cases that I picked up from the manufacturer at their booth at the SHOT Show.  The base is stainless steel, and it takes their proprietary dies to load them, or you'll pull the case apart during sizing.  They're pushing them towards the military as a way to make the cases lighter, and they're also pushing them towards the domestic markets as being reloadable dozens of times.  I forget the number of reloads they claim to have gotten, but the number 40 sticks in my mind.

I get so many 9x19 brass now when I buy the brass from our range that most of it goes to recycling, so I doubt I'll be investing in the dies to load those two piece cases during this lifetime......

Hope this helps.

Fred

Can't use a magnet to pick them up - they are non magnetic.

Yes sir.
I caught that.
I meant that they need to make some that CAN be picked up with a magnet - and still be reloaded.
I think that would be worth something to me personally.

A-ha, my bad.

Yes, a magnet to pick up reloadable cases would be awesome.

They're interesting, but they're the classic solution looking for a problem.

Oh now it's a 2 piece case seamed close to the base of the round. What could possibly go wrong with that? (facetious)

I'm glad you guys pointed out that they are not magnetic - I was thinking about trying them out until I caught that.  I used to scoff at the old farts complaining about picking up brass, but yeah, now picking up only my cases with a magnet would be a big seller to me.

I use a nut-picker to pick up brass.  No ferrous metal required.

Use a Pick Stick for picking up brass.  Costco sells them in two packs, and Harbor Freight sells them.  Here's one type:  https://pikstik.com/  There are many other variations of them, some cheaper, some more..........

The cases in question are magnetic.  I just tested them and a magnet will pick them up.

Hope this helps.

Interesting!

The cases you have are magnetic.

The cases I've found are NOT magnetic.
