Title: Custom Wood Grips??
Post by: Sumdumguy on January 19, 2019, 07:58:38 PM
I recently purchased a Rami and LOVE it, but not so much the rubber grips.

Does anyone know of any active makers of custom wood grips? I've emailed Hakan, Esmeralda and Marschal to no avail. Heck, at this point I'd buy some second hand if I could find them.

This gun deserves a suit, not cargo pants. ;)

Thanks for any help.

I have a couple of sets custom made for me by Hakan and I could probably part with one. If you want a set send me PM.
Dennis Marschalko is hard to reach in Hungary Esmeralda does not make RAMI grips and CZ custom lists some on their web site but I have never seen them on a pistol.

Altamount announced that they are going to be making wood CZ grips soon. I have no experience with Altamount grips.

I prefer wood grips also. Finding good ones for CZ's is difficult.

You could try GRIPS4U:- http://grips4u.net/category/pistol-grips/ . They have a couple of styles for both the RAMI and the RAMI BD on their website.

Yea, I've looked at them. Didn't really care for their scales.

Thanks.

I would order from them, but they don't offer them smooth.

To each their own but why would you want them smooth?

Those look sweet how is the actual feel? Do they have enough texture?

So I can send them to be engraved.

FWIW...a few thoughts after having lived w. wood grios for a while...:
1)  I initially bought wood grips because I flat-out love the look.  Nothing more than that.
2)  I have larger hands and the slightly extra grip thickness helps to fit the RAMI to me a bit better.
3)  For EDC, clothing doesn't get caught as easily on the wood panels as it does on the rubber pieces.
4)  I do have to sacrifice a fair amount of grip stickiness when it comes to shooting.  This is pretty-much a non-issue for causual range outings but can be noticable when competing.

YMMV...just my $.02US...

W. the caveats in the thoightsI just posted, they feel great.  Texture could be a little more coarse but isn't too bad.

Thanks for the reply

This is my carry gun. I'm dressing it up and making it more comfortable for daily carry.

I don't do any competition.

Thanks for the kind words.

I have still not found a maker yet :( I did go ahead and buy a couple slabs of nice curly Koa, now if I could only find an artisan to transform them...

On top of that, the engraver I wanted to use doesn't make Rami grips and won't carve something they didn't make...

Frack!

Good news!

I have a set of grips on the way from Marschal!

It's all coming together, now to find an engraver.

Good for you! What type of wood did you choose? He does very nice work. Hopefully, the plain grips won’t take as long as to get to you as checkered and logo ones. My last set for the CZ 75 took nearly four months in the summer of 2018. These are zebra wood done with a red finish that happened to be ready for shipping.

Nice looking grips! I love the shape he uses.

I ended up getting Sapele, smooth and flat with red lacquer.

I'm going to see about sending him some wood in the future for another set. I have this bookmatched curly Koa sitting here waiting to be beautified. Depending on what kind of engraving work he can do, he may be the engraver aswell.

Marschal... Sapele on the SMC and Padauk on the Mark II. Both are oil finished. I don’t know about the Hungarian postal system but customs can be a PITA in some of these countries with sending parcels. Good luck with your projects.

Oh my, that padauk looks great! I waffled over that and Sapele.

I may have chose wrong lol.

How often do you oil them?

Title: Re: Custom Wood Grips??
Post by: Psyop96 on January 23, 2019, 08:13:44 AM
Since I can be away for a few months at a time, they don’t get oiled often but that hasn’t seem to be an issue. The Padauk’s redness has since toned down over time into a brownish red.

A pity that Brian Glas is no longer making grips. He made me a set from Desert Ironwood for my RAMI BD. I suggest that you search some of the older posts for images. https://web.archive.org/web/20151116172400/http://gripsbyglas.com/images/48-Ironwood.jpg

Nice! I've looked at/Googled older post and images and it seems anyone that made them is no longer doing it.

Yep, unfortunately that's the problem with most of the makers.

Making it harder for me to get rid of my money...

Anyone know a good engraver in the states?

For those of you that have not tried any of these after market grips, please remember that any wood grips (except for Hakan's and only if you ask for it) will add to the width of the frame, which is already wide. Grips from Dennis Marschal are gorgeous, but add substantial width and so do the wood grips from Gripsforyou.net.

If you are still looking for an engraver, I can recommend Ken Smith https://www.facebook.com/kennethsmithengraving/

Long time ago he engraved my Seecamp and not only did a wonderful job, but also was very reasonably priced.

Update: I have went from no scales to having 3 different sets, 2 of which are being made currently.

I purchased a cheap set on ebay to hold down the fort(they aren't bad) and I'm waiting on the Marschals.

I also have another set being made, but I'll hold off on those details until I know if the maker wants to be publicized. I'm most excited about these.

I am glad you are finally getting what you really want, and that is most important.

I have grips from Hakan and Dennis Marshalko and Grips4you and I love them all, but at the end of the day, Rami is my EDC and all those grips that make the pistol really nice looking (aka barbecue) are just too wide for my rather small hand - so it is back to the factory set.
Having said that, hand made grips by a custom grip maker are always nice to see and admire.

Hiya, sounds like the ebay grips will do the trick till your Marschals get delivered. Once they arrive open on a surface that prevents losing any washers or screws from ending up in carpet. Keep a screwdriver in your range bag while you break in the grips to tighten up as soon as a shimy occurs. The shape of rami grips should hold up well. Hope you show em off after they arrive. Be well.

Still waiting, but I think the Marschal set will be finished soon.

I'm dying to see the other set in Koa, they will probably end up being the ones.

Here's to the wait! 🍻

Ladies and gentlemen... Behold!
(https://i.ibb.co/Wf2Rmb5/20190413-152113.jpg) (https://ibb.co/0rGzHg2)

They finally came and I couldn't be happier.

On a less pleasant note, I still haven't heard back from Marschal. I have emailed them multiple times on both emails I have for them and heard nothing.
Disappointing.

Nice, but a bit too light for my taste. IMHO RAMI looks a lot better with darker grips.
Enjoy your grips and be patient with Dennis. Sometimes he is just very busy

I wish someone made nice thin wood grips.  Like someone said back up the thread, all these wood grips good great but they add to the thickness of the rami, and I have small hands.  There use to be thin wood grips available for 1911's.  I have some on my 1911 but that was years ago that I bought them and I don't remember who I got them from, or if they still make them.
