Title: Couldn't be more happy. New 805 PS1
Post by: Brenfan on January 30, 2019, 11:25:13 AM
I have about 200 rounds thru her. And she has been flawless. I cant get over just how smooth and how soft she shoots!
She really stays on target.  Honestly, it's very hard to put this ole gal down.
I have no gripes with her whatsoever.  But, I'm easy to please I reckon. I dont have an A.R. I've ever only owned just one. A little Sig M400 Enhanced.  It was a real shooter though. But, this CZ is just in a different league imo.  If I could do anything to this Bren, it would be to smooth out the trigger pull just a bit. Now, dont get me wrong, she is wonderful outta the box. It's just I'm a bit of a trigger snob.  However, I've heard taking apart the Bren trigger and putting it back is difficult at best.
That's just a wish though. Certainly not something that I cant live without.
Wanna thank y'all for letting me share.  Here's a pic.

Image link doesn't work, but I know what you're talking about.

My Bren 805 S1 is a joy to shoot!

Thank you.
As for the image. That's strange.
The pic is huge on my screen.
I'm using imgur with the bb code.
I tried direct link but, it wouldn't work.
Maybe only I can see it?

Thank you.
Honestly, I like it so much, I may very well get another - a black one.
It reminds me of my Springfield M1A Scout, in that it has a certain "magic" to it.  That may sound silly, and even may be so, but theres no doubt that shes just extremely well made ( imo, anyways ) and performs flawlessly.
Yeah, I like the 805 PS1 a lot lol.

It's not that difficult to take the trigger group apart for polishing, though it can be a bit tricky for some. With a good polish, the pull is super smooth. Pulling the trigger makes me giggle every time.

I did a small write-up on taking the trigger group apart in case you want to give it a try. https://czfirearms.us/index.php?topic=82712.0  (sorry, no pictures).

A question / advice if you dont mind.
Was thinking about putting a Trijicon MRO, the one with 1/3 co-witness.
Is this overkill? And, also, will I need anything else? Will it be the right height?  And, anyone that maybe has an MRO on their Bren, please feel free to chime in.  Thanx.

Something strange just happened.
I had a mag with 20 rounds in that I wanted to finish off.
I just cleaned the Bren 2 days ago.
The 1st shot nothing. Not even a light primer strike.
So, I just put it in my pocket. The next 5 shots ok. Then another misfire, with no light primer strike whatsoever.  The rest of the rounds went off fine.  So, I had the two rounds that did not go off, and loaded them back up and they went bang bang. Fired just fine.
What do yall think?
I called cz and they think it's the ammo.

False start on me lol?
I really apologize for jumping the gun fellas-
I just ran 2 30rd mags back to back and she was absolutely perfect.
Ran smooth as silk. In both semi and rapid fire.
FYI, the misfires were with Federal and the last 2 mags were Winny.
Just indulge me guys, I love this rifle so much lol, I hit the panick button prolly when I shouldn't have.

Everyone wants a dependable rifle, but Does your life depend on it? The misfires would certainly get my attention. I?d keep an eye on it. If it was a duty weapon that you carried daily I?d carry something else til you get it figured out. If it?s a gun that you enjoy but it?s in a safe until you go to the range I certainly wouldn?t lose any sleep over it.

Ah, that's more info than I had originally. Might see if you need some lube inside or if the firing pin has any gunk in it; is it really dirty ammo?

Why not? If you can afford it, and want it, then go for it. I can'r speak to co-witness, can only say the Bushnell TRS-32, ( I am cheap), co-witnesses quite well.

Thanx guys, I'm definitely gonna keep an eye on her.
As for the MRO, I got to thinking and really it does feel like overkill.
Especially for me anywyas. I just shoot for fun.
I'm really interested in the Bushnell mentioned.
Seeing as the bren was designed for 50 meters, what would be the preferred moa? 1, 2 , 5?
I'm woefully ignorant on red dots. I've never owned one before.

Up to 320 rounds and just continues to impress.
This is one heckuva well built rifle imo.

Brenfan,

There are lots of choices to consider for your optics strategy.

1. Red dot sight
2. Red dot sight plus magnifier (two separately mounted devices)
3. Illuminated scope with fixed magnification
4. Illuminated scope with variable magnification

They all have their pros/cons (Size, weight, field of view, reticle choices, distortion, co-witness ability, battery life, price, shooters eye sight etc).  Unless you are doing purely CQB of <=50m then a device with some type of magnification may be worth considering.  Arguably a red dot scope with low magnification is more flexible for a range of shooting scenarios.  Below is a link to an article with a pretty good set of examples:

I honestly cannot put this rifle down lol.
Its prolly the best firearm I've ever bought save my M1A Scout and a Sig P229 Sport.  Just so darn smooth and soft.

After looking and studying, I dont think a prism optic is whatbI need.
That being said, I'm about 99% sure I'll get a Vortex Strikefire 2.
I considered the Spark 2 as well. But, seems the Strikefire will co-witness and has a large field of view for easy acquisition.

Well, went ahead and ordered one ( Strikefire 2 ) thru Amazon.
I looked on GB, but couldn't find a take a shot.
Had to pay tax, but will be here Tuesday latest, maybe Monday.
Plus, Amazon has a good return policy in case something is wrong, like previously owned or what not. I'm really looking forward to it.
Btw, just ran 20rds of the 62gr green tip penetrators and, they fed perfectly!
That 340rds with no end in sight lol....
So, total on the Strikefire 2 was $191 & some change.

Btw, I got the one with both red and green dot.
I didnt realize there were two versions.  At first I ordered the big red dot, but once I saw a video of one that had both, I canceled that order in favor of the res and green dot version. This also included a free hat.

Even though the new version will probably hit the US in rifle form soon I couldn't be happier with my 805.  I swapped the Aimpoint off my AR onto the Bren; it's now my primary HD/zombie gun. 8)

I know just what you mean.
I would MUCH rather have my PS1 than the new 2 version. I love how little recoil she has. Shes built like a tank and as smooth as silk.
If anything, I'll pick up another ps1 before they are gone.

How would you know? Have you fired the Bren 2 yet? It supposed to be much better than the 805 in every way. It will be like the 6 million dollar man, better, stronger , faster.

Because of my personal preference of course.
The 2 is lighter and has more recoil. And from a video review the trigger is not as good as the 1.
I hope this helps.
Also, the recoil I mentioned was confirmed on a video review.
As I stated before, I like the extra weight and low recoil of the 1.

Recoil? It?s a 5.56, there is hardly any recoil to begin with. I love how everyone talks about recoil with a 5.56. To me it?s like shooting a 22.

I also heard the oposite as far as recoil goes for the Bren 2. They said it was smoother shooting and faster so I assume that means pretty tame recoil. I am on the first responder list to get one and will post feedback when I get it. Will be going on my SBR list as well.

Just got a notice from UPS that my Strikefire 2 will be here tomorrow!
I'll keep yall posted.
However, my Bren being FDE, I just noticed that Optics Planet actually has an FDE version! It's called an OPMOD. So, if I really like this Strikefire, which I think I will, I may go ahead and put the one I have coming, the black version on my M1A Scout, and order the OPMOD version from Optics Planet for the Bren.  To have a matching optic, would be pretty slick I think.

Obviously I'd love to get the new version when it comes out but that might not be in the cards for me.  The original 805 is at the top end of what I'm able/willing to spend on a firearm, and I only got it because I found one for $1300.  It's unlikely that I'll be dropping $1900 for an S2.

Just for fun, I will take the contrarian position.

I predict the 805 vs Bren 2 will be like comparing the 3rd generation, all-steel, pistol designs like the S&W 5906 Tactical or Beretta M9A3 with the latest polymer models.

There are modest arguments to be made about lower weight and lower production cost but ultimately they don't feel as nice to shoot or last as long.

I actually see the variation of models as a benefit over time.  Something for everyone and it will make for a happy, healthy and energetic Bren XXX community.

Yeah, I never once said I was against the Bren 2.
You know they will be great.
But, I like the 1 for the reasons you just mentioned.
That's a great analogy.  I'm also a big fan of all steel pistols too.
Just like the old Smith's you mention and Sigs and CZ's.

Here's a question fellas.
After how many rounds do yall clean your Bren?
I do after every session. Which I usually fire no less than 60 rounds.
Usually I'll fire 120 rounds. Of course, I've only fired 340 rounds total.
Do yall clean after every session or just as an example after every hundred or couple hundred rounds?
Thanx!

I think it?s personal preference. I have had week long schools where I have shot 1K rounds thru a DI gun without cleaning, and without a single malfunction. So a piston gun such as the 805, you could probably go longer without issue. Again, is it a safe queen? Or a daily carry that your life depends on?Most people clean way more than what is necessary. Some people love cleaning their guns. I will clean the first few times after I get a new gun to get comfortable with disassembling the weapon.

I feel the same way. I like getting comfy with disassembling and reassembling.  I also like to clean it too. Most times anyways.
Thanx again Joe.

The addition of the Vortex Strikefire 2 has been soooooo much fun.
I can see putting thousands upon thousands more rounds thru this ole gal no problem.

Ah, the addiction is deep within this one...good, good...*rubs hands together*...gooooood.... ;D

Clean it whenever you want, best way to get to know the inner workings of the rifle, really. Mine just runs so well that I often forget, and will suddenly think, "wait, I just put another couple hundred rounds down range, when was the last time I cleaned this rifle?"
This is usually when I can hear ever so faintly a highly enraged Czech Army Sergeant yelling at me. Fortunately I don't speak Czech so I ignore him...

Lol, well played!
But, yes, they run so darn good!  By far the smoothest running semi auto rifle I've ever shot. Which ain't saying much, but I gotta feelin the Bren may be the smoothest running semi auto period.

A good CHF Barrel should be good for 20K rounds.

If the barrel can't easily be replaced, I'd be careful what ammo you use. Using an exclusive diet of Wolf/Barnaul Russian .223 took my 2 MOA 5.56 AK barrel to 7 MOA in around 7000 rounds. It seemed to happen suddenly somewhere around the 7000 round mark.

There's an old US Army study from the 60s or so I've read that specifically tested 7.62 barrel life with 4 different configurations involving 1. copper vs steel bullet jackets and 2. low flame temp ball powder vs higher flame temp stick powder. The longest lasting combination was the use of copper jacketed bullets and the cooler burning ball propellant. Steel jacketed bullets failed due to accuracy loss or keyholing rounds, while the copper jacketed failed due to passing under the test's velocity loss threshold- which to me likely means it would still have useful accuracy. The hotter burning stick powder killed the barrel faster no matter what jacket material was used, however.

Andrew Tuohy did a test for Lucky Gunner  (https://www.luckygunner.com/labs/brass-vs-steel-cased-ammo/ (https://www.luckygunner.com/labs/brass-vs-steel-cased-ammo/))  using American made vs Russian made ammo with several different barrels, which seemed to support the previous army study's results regarding bullet jacket material, but can only hint at what contribution the Russian powder may have given to shortened barrel life.

I now only shoot loads using copper jacketed bullets and ball powder in anything that has a rare, expensive, or otherwise hard to replace barrel.

Thank you for that information!

It has also been reported that the older Russian style ammo is more acidic requiring a water wash of the barrel soon after shooting.
In addition, steel cased ammo has been implicated in premature ejector failures as the cases are harder than brass.

Like you that's why I only shoot the best ammo and ignore the "on sale" or gun show reloads.

Thanx fellas. Good info.
What I've been using and, what I plan to use is Winny white box 55gr and Federal 55gr as well as American Eagle 55gr also, American Eagle/Lake City 62gr Green Tip. Does that sound ok?

Just a note: I never had an issue with rust or anything like that after shooting Russian ammo. Nothing that would make me think there was anything acidic. I lived in a very humid climate at the time as well and none of it ever bothered the rifle with signs of corrosion.

Brenfan, all of those loads should be ok. Lighter commercial loads extend barrel life too.

Don't worry too much. By the time you've shot a barrel out with those light US commercial loads, you'll probably be in a position to pay someone to custom make you a new barrel or three.  ;)

Just 1 question, and please excuse my ignorance.
Is what I'm shooting/what I mentioned, is that light commercial loads?

Anyone running a suppressor? If so, how do you like it?
Any tips or pointers or suggestions appreciated!
I'm seriously considering one.

So, just bought a new Vortex Prism from a member from another forum. $150 shipped.
It's just amazing what you can get from Vortex, for the money, especially when you consider the warranty Vortex has.
This Prism scope is awesome....I'll post some pics later. It just came in this a.m.

Thank you sir.
I really love both, the red dot and the prism.
Just need to figure where to put each.
Between my Bren and M1A Scout.

Perhaps she'd like to play in the rain? My Scorpion didn't mind.

Good point. Normally, I would. And, I'm sure she wouldn't mind either.
But, man, it was a real mess here. Very, very muddy.
We live on the NC Tennessee line and the State of Tennessee declared a State of Emergency, its rained so much.
Yup, it's just been a mess.
However, that was until we had a lot of wind and a couple sunny days. Its amazing how quickly strong winds can dry things up.
