Title: Anyone loading 7.62x39mm in heavier bullets?
Post by: OldManMontgomery on April 15, 2019, 01:35:38 AM
Having a CZ small action bolt rifle in 7.62x39mm, i find I am free of the gas operating system.  I am also understanding the lockup of the bolt gun is stronger than the locking set up of the gas guns.

So Im working with 150 grain bullets and have achieved nearly 2300 fps without the usual signs of high pressure.  (Bolt opening and extraction being sticky, excessively flattened primers and such.)  My idea is to develop a deer suitable round in a fairly light and easy to carry rifle.  So far, I am sticking with iron sights to avoid the weight of a scope.  I may have to rethink that idea later.

Anyone get a similar wild hair?

Some random thoughts for you...

? One issue is that these European "7.62" barrels will be closer to 0.312" than the typical American 0.308". These larger dia bullets are available for reloading, but are typically the much more blunt-nosed bullets for 30-30, rather than the elegant boat tailed spitzers you might be thinking about. Slug your bore to be sure.

? Armoredman is casting his own bullets for 7.62x39 and you'll want to talk to him.

? My son started out to reload this caliber and quickly found out the hardest and most expensive component to find was Boxer primed brass.
