Title: SP-01 Tactical slide milling recommendations
Post by: boss281 on November 03, 2019, 11:44:46 AM
A while back my P-01 red dot solution wasn't working for me so I sold everything. My eyesight is degrading over time (near sighted requiring prescriptions for distance) and a red dot on my rifles is much more natural that on a pistol.

That said I want to try competing with pistol.  I have an SP-10 Tactical that I improved with CGWs parts, and picked up a spare SP-01 slide cheap for milling. I'm not worried about having back up irons on the gun so it's ok to mill out the dovetail for the red dot mount.

Hope everyone has been well, I did a lot of traveling before fully retiring and now want to get back into the game.

John

Send it to CZ Customs for their plate system. It will allow you to mount any Red Dot you want.

+1  Yes! CZC did an excellent job milling my SP-01 Tac for a DPPro, and my P-01 Compact for a bit smaller Venom. The DPP is a superb optic, it's a bit tank-like but IMHO it works great on the SP-01 but a wee bit large for a compact. I have extra plates, so I could swap 'em at a later date. RMR/Holosun, SIG, whatever.
In the rapidly changing world of electronics; the option to mount a different optic IMHO is a plus. I understand CGW also offers multi plate option, and they did a great job mounting an RMR on my little RAMI BD.

Vinny, those are nice. I seem to recall you pioneering some of the mini red dot mounting solutions a while back. I tried and failed on my P-01, and sold it, and got another that I took apart and added the Cajun Gun Works kit for internals.

But my eyes aren't getting better, and I need to be able to see to compete. A red dot is my only solution unless I just shoot Pistol Caliber Carbine division for the rest of my life...

My SP-01 Tactical's slide is on its way to CGW for milling and installation of a plate for Trijicon's RMR/SRO.

I have been using a 3.25 MOA RMR Type 2 on a FNX-9 -- milled by Parker Mountain - with great success.  It really aids my aging eyes.  My ability to resolve the Point of Aim is much better with the RMR than with iron sights, particularly beyond 20 feet and out to about 50 feet -- ranges I haven't been able to shoot at accurately for quite a few years.   It also highlights how critical trigger press is, as the red dot moves around a lot if I don't do my job.  This carries over to better trigger press (and grip) with other pistols with iron sights.

I am going without the Trijicon base plate that has a rear (elevated) iron sight; I will use the one that CGW makes for the RMR/SRO.  I will keep the stock front sight on the pistol, but presume it will be below my viewing angle through the RMR (it will be removed if it is in the way).   I don't anticipate using this pistol in a SD role and can live without iron sights to back up the red dot sight.

Eventually, I plan to get a SRO -- because, with my RMR on the SP-01 Tactical, the FNX-9 now is without a red dot sight of its own.

Any experiences with CGW's setup are of interest to me.  I have developed a lot of confidence in them from three or four instances of their work on my CZ's or selling me parts (that always seem to work).

The RMR plate should also fit the Holosun 507c. I haven't tried one yet but I hear very positive reviews.  Would like to see some images of the CGW setup when you get it back! Thanks,  Vinny

Thanks for the tip on the Holosun 507c, which currently has a much lower price point than the SRO.

I really like the red dot sights -- they make a big difference.

Pictures to follow -- I think I have about a 4-5 week wait time.

On Holosun, I have it and I’m slightly disappointed with it.
The window and 2 moa dot are too small IMO if you use it for sport. I would recommend Larger window MRDS like cmore, SRO or DPP with bigger dot
