Title: What is the best 9mm pistol full size and compact?

As the subject line says what is the best 9mm pistol in full size and compact?
Why?

Left that kinda wide op-en, didn't ya? :)  Every answer will be subjective, of course, and ever evolving. For instance, right now my favorite full size 9mm pistol is the SP-01 Phantom, love it, great pistol. Compact 9mm dodges between two different pistols, at this moment, the classic CZ PCR, (still think it was/is one of the best CCW pistols produced), and the new CZ P-10C. Of course, I am a little biased.  8)

All anybody will have an opinion on - will be based upon what they already bought, or shot.
Then everybody looks for something different or likes something different.
I won't be able to come up with a definitive answer until I buy and shoot every 9mm pistol ever made....
So it's gonna be a while.  I could use some help in funding my research though. LOL

I have

four striker fired full sized pistols - none of them make it to a the best category.  A combination of poor groups and reliability issues.

two striker fired compact pistols - one is okay, the other one doesn't make the grade

seven full sized hammer fired pistols - the P09 9MM is, without a doubt, the most accurate center fire semi-auto I've ever shot.

five compact hammer fired pistols - it's a toss up between the P07 .40 S&W and my wife's CZ 75 Compact.  I've not shot her compact much but she makes very small groups with it.

All the full sized and compact hammer fired guns are extremely reliable.

All the full sized hammer fired guns feel great in my hand, too.  Same for the hammer fired Compacts.

Some of the striker fired guns fit my hand, too.  One doesn't.

Fit, feel, accuracy, reliability - CZ P09 and CZ P07 for me.  I really like my Compact CZ 85 clone - but it is not as accurate as the P07.

I dont have many compacts.
The full size that goes to the range with me every time is my P-09.
I guess I should get a P-07

Sig 226 & Glock 19

Hard to argue with those two.  I will say the CZ-75 has a place at the table, without doubt.  Consideration for the Browning Hi Power and HK USP series should be made.  Personally, as far as striker fired pistols are concerned, I have been running a Beretta APX for the last year and it has been absolutely flawless and dead accurate.  I bought a second one just to have.  Superbly ergonomic.  But, it hasn’t the length of service to be labeled anything but having great potential, IMO.

No such thing as the "BEST". They all have their quirks and they will all fail at some point. The best one is the one that fits YOU and YOU operate the best. Otherwise it's just competing opinions.

But like was said..... Everybody has an opinion about why THEY like something better.

I'll play!

*   Full size - CZ 75 Sport II, 6" (if unavailable, then the CZ Custom Shop CTS)
*   Compact - CZ Compact SDP (from CZ Custom of course)

Yes I know that I have champagne taste on a beer Budget... That is why I own neither of these.

Full size:  Beretta 92A1
Why: Heavy but almost no recoil, reliable, DA/SA, long sight radius, good stock trigger, upgraded to combat sights

Compact: Shield for now, maybe the CZ 75D Compact once I actually get it to the range.
Why Shield: Thin but good capacity (I’ve added +1 Magguts to my carry mags for 18), polished trigger has helped groups, Talon grips, light.

Favorite full size 75B and P-09

Favorite compact P-07 followed by the heavy Sig P239 and P-10C

Favorite trainer and share gun P-226 SSE and standard P-226

"Best" is what I'm shooting well on any given day.   That varies.  :) :)

My opinion:  the full size CZ  75 Shadow "versions" tuned to your shooting, ammo and trigger pull preferences.  No firing pin interrupt for easiest trigger tuning and the larger diameter bbl to stabilize recoil.
These versions can shoot accurately easier than others.  It also can swing and shoot very fast and accurate follow-on shots easier than most.   More aftermarket parts options.

I think people are conflating the question of 'the best' with 'my favorite'. Two different things, although the results might be similar.

Can't disagree...but...

without scientific testing, all we have is our own personal perspective of 'Best'.

I'd suggest your entries are based on just that, unless you're SAAMI, CIP, or UL. ;D

Well, my only single CZ to this point - has me looking way better at shooting than any of my other handguns.  It appears to me to be the best all around DA/SA full sized carry gun in my possession.  The recoil management is superb. I can only compare it to guns I own, or have shot to this point. I cannot wait to find one that shoots better than this one!  Before I got this CZ - I would have said my Sig 226.  I slow fire my Springfield 5.25 best at distances when compared with the others, but I wouldn't carry it daily.

I have a few compact and sub-compact guns, but didn't mention them because they probably aren't the best.... Just the best I have at this point.  Not even sure any of them would rate a "favorite."

But yes, the question is way to wide open for interpretation....so I qualified my choice.

Never said it wasn't subjective - opinion based - just not the same as 'a favorite pistol'.

I have a favorite pistol, but I would not say it is the 'best'.

When I saw this question, my first thought was: there's a hole with no bottom.

I'll jump in feet first anyway.  For me, the best full size 9mm is a Beretta M9A1G with factory night sights and a Streamlight TLR-1s installed. This pistol was an over run from a special order placed by a police department. Compact, for me, is a CZ PCR with the CGW Defensive carry package installed by CGW.

All that being said my without a doubt favorite 9mm pistol is my Dan Wesson V-Bob, not a terribly practical carry piece but accurate, fun to shoot, and looks good too.

After 21 years of shooting and carrying nothing but Glocks I walked away this year and discovered the DA/SA safety and advantage of the CZ P-07 and CZ 75 SP-01 Phantom.  I still have one striker-fired auto the SIG P320 in 9mm--I can convert this single weapon into the Compact Carry (17-rnd mag) or the Compact (15-rnd mag).  But my choice is anything in DA/SA CZ...  8)

As the subject line says what is the best 9mm pistol in full size and compact?
Why?

This question has no single answer. The best full size 9mm depends on the intended application, as well as the individual using it. the Glock 17 is an incredibly reliable and accurate firearm, however I'd never buy one because it doesn't fit my hand well. The CZ 75BD is an amazing gun, but it's heavy, and if someone isn't used to DA/SA hammer fired guns, it could be an issue. The same goes for the various compact 9mm's. There is no "best" 9mm.

That being said, there *are* 9mm's that are probably best avoided due to reliability issues. But I won't get into badmouthing any particular manufacturers/models here as it isn't productive.

I'm going to join everybody saying that 'best' is incredibly subjective.

For example, the PPQ is universally regarded as an outstanding pistol, but I am the outlier that finds the grip rather uncomfortable. The way the backstrap is shaped, the gun recoils right into the first joint on my thumb, and leaves me bruised after a while.

Despite obviously being a CZ fan, I sold my RAMI because it just didn't feel quite right in my hand or while carrying.

I've bought and sold, carried and shot a lot of CZs over the years starting with my first 75B.  Experience has been with the CZ-75, the CZ-75B, the CZ-75D PCR, the CZ-75 Compact, the CZ-85, the CZ-83, the P07, the P09, not to mention several CZ rifles and shotguns.  I guess I'm kind of a fan boy except that I tend not to hang on to any gun very long.

As an Army officer, I've twice been asked to commission new officers and in both cases, the presentation pistol I gave was a CZ-75B.  These days my favorite pistol is the CZ-75 Compact.  The one I shoot well and don't find too onerous to carry.  I guess that makes the 75B and the 75 Compact the best ones for me.

Full sized comment:

For hammer fired SA/DA it hard to beat the CZ75 series although they did it with the CZ85 combat model.

For the striker fired types best I've tried yet is a Walther PPQ

I had that same problem with the Ruger American Pistol.
It would take the hide right off that first joint.
I sanded the corner almost completely off the thing and it still wasn't enough.
Traded it for a Canik TP-9SF.

Very subjective subject.
My HK VP9SK is hard to beat for concealed carry. Quality weapon that is accurate, reliable, easy to conceal and shoot and is also ambidextrous.
There are others out there but this one has to be on or near the top.
On the full size I guess it depends on what you want to do with it: duty weapon, carry weapon or range toy. It also depends on your physical
composition (ie hand size, finger reach, etc.). CZ 75's go on the list without saying. I also have shot and liked G17 and G19, FN 509, Sig P226
and P229 and I also like the P320 even with its well documented issue. Good quality 1911's are also right there. All these weapons are quality firearms that will do the job.

This is straight opinion, but for me, the Glock 34 and Glock 19 are it.

Those are what work for me.

It caused me great pain to admit this to myself, as I sort of cut my teeth on shooting the CZ75 family.  But the shot timer and targets do not lie; I shoot Glocks better.

YMMV

What does best mean anyway?  To me it means it lasts...and lasts.  I agree with the 226, it was on my side for 25 years.  Gluck tells all adopting agencies that they recommend their product be replaced after 5 years in a holster.  Gaston also admitted in court testimony that it only costs him $64 and change to make one.  That doesnt sound "best" to me.

I think people are conflating the question of 'the best' with 'my favorite'. Two different things, although the results might be similar.

con·flate

verb

gerund or present participle: conflating

combine (two or more texts, ideas, etc.) into one.
"the urban crisis conflates a number of different economic and social issues"

synonyms: mix, blend, fuse, unite, integrate

Well Said.
So to avoid CONFLATING the issue of best 9mm; may I suggest we consider each 'manual of arms' type of pistol separately. Some examples:

Best Striker Fired 9mm (Glocks, HK VP-9, CZ P-10); Best DA/SA de-cocker (Sigs, CZ's), Best SAO Manual Safety (1911), Best Decocker with Safety (FNHFNXTactical,Beretta, S&W), Best DAO (Sig, S&W,Kahr), etc. Otherwise, we're talking about best type of action, not best gun.  Just Say'in.  ::)

Well... not exactly.

Best should be thought of as "most suitable for a given person and purpose." Those details are often omitted, though, making discussions like this somewhat maddening. ;-)

Ideally one would state how a pistol is to be used and any relevant circumstances, mitigating factors or other details that would affect choice and then we could discuss the merits more pragmatically.  The best competition pistol is not the best backup gun, etc, etc... :)

That said, I personally am currently only working with pistols intended for self defense and am quite sold on the hammer-fired polymer P-series guns for this particular application. The only downside at the moment is that there isn't a subcompact offering for those who like or need to go small.

I'm with s0nspark on this one regarding why I haven't replied to this thread until now.  My favorite carry gun right now is the Rami, but it is playing the role of a full size gun, carried most often OWB at 3:30 to 4:00.  As far as range time fun is concerned, my current favorite by far is the CZ75 Matte Stainless.  I just don't carry it for SD often.

I don't think I have a clear favorite for subcompact SD carry.  For the pocket, Beretta Nano gets the nod.  Sometimes, the even  lighter .40 Charter Pitbull rides in the pocket, but more often as a lighter alternative to the Rami or PCR, etc. OWB on the hip.  I like the way it rides higher with holster combo and the nature of the revolver's ergos.  When my hips are acting up, it doesn't wear me down as much.  I carry almost always, even when relaxing in the domicile.  Bellyband works great in pajamas.  The pocket holsters work great in the robe's pocket, too.

Full-sized: CZ 75B SA
Compact: SIG P229 or SP-01 Compact

In general, anything besides a polymer-framed, striker-fired pistol. A little over a year ago I got rid of three striker guns (PPQ, Shield, XDm Compact) because I was much less accurate with them than any of my steel-framed, hammer-fired CZs. I kept a VP9.

I hadn't shot any gun from September until about two weeks ago when I went to the range with my son. I shot my 75B SA, SP-01 Compact, and Rami as well as I had during the summer. I then shot my VP9, which I hadn't shot in over a year. At 10 yards on the same paper target I had already been using I couldn't tell where my shots with the VP9 were landing. They sure wen't landing anywhere near the 1" circle I was aiming at.

I think the metal-framed CZs fit my hand "naturally." Obviously I've lost whatever accuracy skill I had with the VP9 when I used to shoot it regularly. I don't see much point in keeping the VP9 anymore.

OK, For those of us that like DA/SA Handguns.....Here's my suggestion for BEST 9mm Compact in the DA/SA category.  The new (not even on their website yet-probably SHOT SHOW official intro) Sig 229 Legion RX. A time-proven platform with the latest technological advancements. RDS sight system, co-witness night sights, Short Reset Trigger, Custom G10 molded grips, extended beaver-tail for high hand hold, undercut trigger guard, reduced size decock lever and slide release, etc. On my digital scale...32.0 oz with magazine. I don't buy into all the 'Legion' hoopla, but it IS one helluva handgun. Sold my 2nd to last striker a VP-9, and I just got #409  ;D

How does how much anything cost to make determine if it is good or not?

I do not see a correlation.

I have not read all 4 pages yet and I rarely become involved in the "best and why" threads.

I will tell you my favorites

full size  -   CZ SP-01 Tac because in my hands and with my eyes the one I own performs admirably, never fails and makes holes where I think holes should be made.
compact  -  Sig 229 I also love the P-01 but the Sig has a feel to it that makes me smile. The P-01 is hard to beat if you like the steel frame, hammer fire gun and is as close to shooting the SP-01 as far as the setuo and manipulation of the gun go. But the Sig has the smile factor for me.
Subcompact carry gun......Kahr CW9 - accurate, inexpensive and easy to conceal. A real great carry weapon.

Thank you for your time today.

Fine choices!
+1 Have to say, we're about on the same page. All DA 1st round.
I've ditched all but one striker, and that (Glock 17 MOS) will undoubtedly fall by the wayside soon, as I'm liking my P-07 with RDS more and more. Love my SP-01 Tac Full-size, and P-01 compact, but just picked up a Sig P229 RX.

I wanted a pocket micro-carry 9mm but my LGS didn't have a Kahr PM9 to try, so I ended up with the Sig 290rs. No regrets, but I'm sure I would have liked the Kahr too. For carry or HD I prefer DA/SA or DAO to striker or SA/safety.

You don't ?
Interesting.
How about recommended life span of 5 years for these guns in hands of law enforcement ? Any correlation there ?

if the life span is longer then 5 years for a FN or a H&K or a 9mm 1911 with the exact same guidelines, then maybe yes.........without details, again no correlation .....none.

there are too many variables to "in the hands of law enforcement" to tell anyone anything.

How does that 5 years compare to in the hands of Military or in the hands of competitors or in the hands of range employees or in the hands of old guys that live up the street?

Round count is significant to me, when I am going to determine quality of a handgun and endorse its longevity.
Ammo type is significant in the same. Cost to produce it is insignificant if efficiencies or volume or both together are the reason for the low cost. If inferior product or procedures are the reason, it may be a very significant point. without knowing this however it is mute.

How it compares to other brands and other styles given the same circumstances is significant. A statistic alone has impact appeal, but is meaningless and sometimes incorrect without parameters and validation.

I probably shoot my hand gun more times in a summer then most handgun owners do in 3 years. So a gun with parts that fail in 5 years the way I shoot is to be expected.

I just don't resent a specific brand and back up my emotion with statistics that are leading and without a comparison baseline .

I only seek to explain my thought process.

Beretta 92fs and CZ75 PCR.
Because I said so.

Top 3, in my opinion, in no particular order:

Full size:
H&K USP
SIG P226
CZ 75 (B/BD)

Compact:
H&K P2000
SIG P228 (/M11A1)
CZ 75C (/PCR)

Why? All are excellently designed and engineered, have proven track records in the hands of world militaries and police forces, and demonstrate excellent handling and reliability.

I'm a little surprised to see so many G19 votes and not more for the P10C... Especially on a CZ forum. :)

Best should be thought of as "most suitable for a given person and purpose." Those details are often omitted, though, making discussions like this somewhat maddening. ;-)

That's right, and for me those are :
Range :  CZ 75 SP-01 or Canik P120
Full size carry : Glock 17
Compact carry : Ruger LC9s

Same here... but it is a relatively new pistol.

Once I vetted my P-10C, I sold all of my other striker-fired guns. Mag compatibility with my P-07s was a small factor, but the main motivator was that I just no longer had any interest in other striker-fired guns. *shrug*

I'm in agreement with s0nspark. I like it more than the G19, it's just too new for me to completely trust it. Once the kinks are worked out, I think it'll be a fine firearm. It'll take a few production runs before that happens though.

For range target shooting: SIG P210, Compact CZ SP01 Compact
For range fun shooting: CZ Shadow 1 or 2, CZ SP01 Compact or Semi-Compact
For IPSC competition: CZ Shadow 2, Compact CZ SP01 Compact
For concealed carry: Ed Brown 1911, CZ SP01 Compact or Sphinx Subcompact
For open carry: CZ Shadow 2, CZ SP01 Compact

I don't hardly shoot my G-19 or Sigs anymore because I like CZs better. When they limit how many pistols I can possess, I will dump my Sigs and the Glock in favor of keeping CZs.

Yep. Mine is a range/teaching gun... I'm personally still not to the point of trusting it for self-defense. My P-07s handle that role perfectly, however, so I'm not really even expecting that of the P-10C. It may rise to the level where I'd feel comfortable recommending it to someone else for that role, though. So far I have been pretty impressed, first gen teething issues notwithstanding.

Same here. For all the teething issues that Glocks had at first (and arguably still have *cough*), they became the most popular pistol in America. I don't think the P-10C will reach that level, but I see it as a formidable alternative. It fixes everything that I don't like about Glocks.
Striker-fired guns just don't do anything for me though. I prefer a hammer.

Compact? A SIG P239, especially if you (unfortunately) live in a state with magazine capacity limitations.
FYI... P10C is available in 10rd capacity.

And it isn't approved for sale in California, a state with magazine capacity limitations.
Yeah NY has similar limits. Luckily I was able to get one here.

No such thing as the "BEST". They all have their quirks and they will all fail at some point. The best one is the one that fits YOU and YOU operate the best. Otherwise it's just competing opinions.

I am going to jump in this camp I think.

A lot will depend on ergonomic fit to the user and as far as compacts, how compact it is and does it fit the size/concealibility need and still be shootable.

My P07 is a nice size compact.  I shoot it pretty good.  My MK40 Kahr is smaller, very accurate, more concealable but is a handful to shoot in that size.   (The 9mm would have been a better choice but I still shoot the thing very well due to the sweet trigger).

The CZ beats the Glocks hands down in ergonomics but both the P07 and the G22 have a bit of trigger reach issues.

Full size 9mm that fits me best; the Browning BDM, the disco’d high power sized DA with the slides made by SIG.  (breach blocks welded into steel sheet metal slides).

I don’t carry the BDM much and my concern is there is no factory support likely to be found with them.

My current two:

Full size- M9A3 (I know it's bulky compared to my M&P 9, but it's just so smoooooth)
Compact- Does subcompact count? I use a M&P shield for EDC.
