I am purchasing a walking around rifle. Looking hard at the standard rifle in .223 Most of the reviews are for the varmint rifle. How does the shorter, lighter version compare as to accuracy?

I do not have a 527 in a varmint rifle, but a couple of standard types, one .22 hornet, the other 6.5 Grendel. For two or 3 shots I think you will be happy with accuracy, especially for a "walking around rifle" which will be much handier. I have a Remington 700 varmint in .223 and it's a bear to carry. Shooting from field positions, standing, kneeling, sitting( not at a bench) I think you would be better with the standard, off a bench the varmint because it is simply heavier and less subject to movement, plus the barrel will vibrate less or more consistently upon firing, and be more consistant when hot, not so much a problem in field shooting.

I've got a Varmint in .223 - it isn't a walk around rifle but is much less "Varmint" than my brother's Howa (Weatherby) in .223 which is much heavier. If I was buying today I'd opt for the American as a more versatile rifle and, by all reports, just as accurate as the Varmint.
p.s. the CZ adjustable trigger is heaven sent. The Howa trigger out of the box is among the worst I have felt in 50+ years of shooting. The Howa is, none the less, very accurate and a fraction of the cost of the CZ locally.

"Walking around...." in what type of environment. I too have a 527 Carbine, ended up with the 7.62x39 caliber after a lot of listening/reading and really thinking about what niche I wanted it fill in my collection. I'm sure you will be happy with the shorter and lighter version.....accuracy will not be affected they are just awesome rifles. ;)

I've got both the American and the Varmint models in .223Rem. The American shoots every bit as well with factory ammo as the Varmint. I don't take the Varmint out much any more simply because it is heavier and not as convenient to poke it out of a truck window (sometimes the need to do that arises on a ranch.).
