Shadow 2 or CGW 75 SP-01?
« on: January 17, 2019, 06:47:08 PM »
For some time now I have been shopping for my first CZ handgun,..something to shoot steel for accuracy and speed with my son and some friends.  My first concern is accuracy with speed second.

I thought I had decided on a 75 SP-01 and I would send it to CGW for the works but today at the local gun shop I handled a Shadow 2 (blue) and I really liked it!

If I am going to spend $1200 would I be better off buying the 75 SP-01 from CGW for $1038 or just pick up the Shadow 2 for $1149?  With shipping and transfer fees they will end up almost the same price.

Thanks for the advice! :)

Didn't you say in your other thread you didn't want a Shadow? Either way, it comes down to which is more comfortable for you. I always prefer a Shadow for range use/competition.

You'll only be sorry when your reaching for your wallet. It passes when you open the box. The Shadow 2 has noticeably different ergos, I like it a lot. You can always throw a few Cajun parts at it later. [emoji48]

I have a SP01 that is Cajunized, an Accu-Shadow and a Shadow 2.  The Shadow 2 is technically my son's gun for USPSA but since he is 18 now and I bought the gun it is technically mine.  I have only shot about 500 rounds through it.  He has about 5k through it and it has only had springs changed.

I prefer in this order: Accu-Shadow, SP01 and then Shadow 2.  The slightly smaller grip radius of the first two guns are just more comfortable.  I feel that I transition with them better because of the few less ounces.

For your buy the Shadow 2 is probably your best buy with resale value taken into consideration.  I picked up my SP01 lightly used for $700 so quite a value drop from the price tag at CGW.

I have a Shadow 2, fully Cajunized, and an SP-01 Tactical that's fully Cajunized as well. The main differences are the grip, firing pin block, and sight radius.

The sight radius really isn't worth thinking about.

The grip is more of a personal preference but I really enjoy the more aggressive and fatter grip on the Shadow 2. The first time I shot a Shadow 2 it was a very familiar feeling. Almost like picking up a gun I had previously owned. That was the initial thing that sold me on the gun before I bought it. It just feels amazing.

Without the firing pin block on the Shadow 2 you can get a really nice trigger pull. A hand fit disconnector or even the drop-in CGW part makes the Shadow 2 one of the finest guns I've ever owned or shot. My fully Cajunized SP-01 is a totally different feel with longer reset and more take up but still in a class above the rest.

For what you want to do I would say get the Shadow 2 and Cajunize it.

I have large hands, I am 6' 5" and 260lbs., and the Shadow 2 was comfortable in my hand.  The Shadow 2 is a large/heavy gun compared to the SP-01 and both are large/heavy compared to the Sig 320 I am currently shooting.

I am not sure if I will get tired of how large/heavy the Shadow 2 is compared to my Sig 320 and the SP-01 is a good compromise between the two.

Maybe I should buy them both?:)

Lol!

That's the tricky part. How deep down that rabbit hole do you want to go? I've spent roughly $1700 a piece on my Shadow 2 and SP-01 Tactical. The Shadow 2 is faster for me but I'm a little more accurate with the SP-01 running a CZ Custom stainless, threaded, hand-fit barrel. I wouldn't sell either one and picking a favorite isn't an option. I love them both. Time and money well spent.

I vote for both too!  Seriously, I saw a Shadow 2 in the case at a shop Saturday but came back Sunday to handle it.  Dry fired it once and had it boxed up.  I shot a friends SP01 and it felt like a 97 in the ergonomics and trigger.  The ergonomics of the frame and the smoothness of the trigger make the price tag well worth it to me.

lets see if this makes sense to me...

heavier is better for pairs since the weight helps get the sights back on same target
bull barrels also help put the weight up front for same reason and help lock up

but a bit lighter is better for transitions

little baby targets at distance benefit from a light trigger so you don't have as much time to pull off target - and a longer sight radius.

steel matches tends to be a bit more transition focused,  full of small targets - and dont have any DA rules.

that said.. on a 1200 budget for a steel gun ide get a S2 and put a 6.5mm x 0.09" dawson front sight.. and sao TS style trigger and tune the hell out of the trigger to sub 2#
later on look for a s2 upper w/ optic

up that to 1500 and ide be thinking a TSO in 9mm
and later on mess with frame mounted optic

or dont tell the wife and order a tuned SAO A01 SD

100% down to which feels best for you. They're quite different ergonomically, and the S2 is a fair amount heavier.

SP-01 with CGW Pro Kit will be a much better trigger than the stock Shadow 2. And even IF you decided to do the CGW Pro Kit on the S2, it will only marginally be better due to a slightly shorter reset.
