CZ Shadow Target 2 vs CZ Bull Shadow Optic Ready
« on: February 27, 2019, 09:12:23 PM »
Looking for a bit of advise here. I'm currently looking for a CZ to eventually shoot in USPSA Carry Optics. Here's my challenge, I have smaller hands and shorter fingers than most. I have handled the Shadow Target 2 at my local gun shop and the Target 2 fits my hand extremely well. However, I don't think the Shadow Target 2 is legal in USPSA. I recently found out that the CZ 75 Bull Shadow is legal in USPSA and noticed that there is a CZ75 Bull Shadow that is optic ready with the short reach trigger.

So, my questions are,

1) Will the Bull Shadow have the same feel as the Target 2?

2) Do all Shadow Target 2's have the short reach trigger installed?

3) Does the Bull Shadow optic ready come milled with plates?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hey Steelerfan.  I think I can help with at least one question, maybe 2.

Here is the CZ 75 SP01 Shadow Target II: https://oakhillguns.com/pistol/cz-usa/cz-usa-75-sp-01-shadow-target-ii-9mm.html

Here is the CZ 75 SP01 Shadow Target: https://oakhillguns.com/pistol/cz-usa/cz-75-sp01-custom-shadow-target-9mm.html

I don't believe either of these "stock" custom shop guns come with the Short Reach.  They do come with Short Reset.  Short Reach would need to be additional custom work done by a shop (cz custom, cajun gun works, also seen the name Matt Mink being mentioned I think), or you can buy parts and put them in, to achieve the reach reduction.  I know this is legal in production, but not sure about carry optics.  But am sure you already know since that is what you want to do.

As far as the Target II not being legal, that I am not sure, but I have a thought on that.  The CZ 75 SP01 Shadow Target is on the list.  It has same specs as Shadow Target II, except on the original Target, the slide has additional milling to get the very low sight.  If that version is legal then I would think the Target II must also be, unless there aren't 2,000 of them yet?  Maybe uspsa is lumping the Target and Target II all into one line of production list when they say "CZ 75 SP01 Shadow Target"?
I actually find the production list a little confusing when I think about it sometimes for these cz custom guns.  For instance, there are so many cz custom models that are really just CZ 75 SP01 Shadows Customs with tiny differences (but all of those differences seem to be legal changes for production rules).  So on the list they have the regular sp01 shadow custom in black and duo tone, also have the sp01 shadow target, sp01 accu shadow, and on.  To me, these are all sp01 shadow customs with same trigger job and almost all parts, except one has bushing, target models have same or almost same sight with different milling requirements for slide, and there are a couple color choices.  If uspsa requires that at least 2,000 of each be made to be on list, I think that is weird.  They are all sp01 shadow customs.  Maybe I am crazy or overthinking the production list.

I think the grips stock triggers should be the same.. the big difference is extra barrel weight helps reduce muzzle flip.. I know a bunch of guys we shoot with run 5" tungsten sleeved Akai 2011s and Tanfo Stock 2s.. there must be a reason.

Thanks guys, I think if I built a shadow custom and added the short reach trigger I'll be around the price of the 75 bull shadow. So considering that I would probably go with the bull shadow with the extra weight out front. But there is a camp that thinks that the added weight increases split times on the swing.

Anyone shooting these two pistols in competition that could add their thoughts.

I can't say, maybe CZ custom or a person with both a CZ 75 Bull Shadow and CZ 75 SP01 Shadow Custom (target or otherwise) can answer the question about weight up front.

However, the SP01 Shadow Customs have the full dust cover with rail (weight up front) and the 75 Bull Shadow has a heavier barrel but no full dust cover.  Which one has "more weight up front"?  Who knows.

You can get a $1,200 SP01 Shadow Custom from Oak Hill, once they get back in stock, and then get $100 worth of parts for the reach reduction.  This is significantly cheaper than a Bull Shadow.  Even if you can't do the reach reduction work (ie. putting in the parts) and have to get a custom shop to do it, i think you will still be a few hundred dollars cheaper than Bull Shadow.

Ive got a bull shadow upper that rides on both my sp01 frame and a 75 sa frame than came with a CTS upper..  the sp01 BS shoots great and shoots like my shadow 2 and TSO - very soft and easy to shoot well and on the move - but there is something special about the short dust cover 75 SA frame with the BS and CTS uppers.  a hair more snappy perhaps but the sights just are quicker to settle.
