Was the CZ-75 designed for commercial use or military?
« on: February 18, 2019, 09:16:04 AM »
Okay, so I originally thought that the CZ-75 was designed for military use. And that seems to be a common thought in the community. For instance, this web page below has this to say about the CZ (along with the Hi power)- "Both were conceptualized for military use." That would make some sense.

Of course, the 75 wasn't for the Czech military as they were using pistols chambered in 9x18 or 7.62x25 Tokarev. The 9mm chambering was definitely aimed at the west and the 75 had to be developed in secret. One of the forum members, Braing2ad pointed this out:

KEEP in mind that the CZ 75 was a commercial product.  The Czech military didn?t use them and no east block countries did either.

So what was the 75 designed for- military or commercial use?

It was intended for export, not domestic use. The goal was to bring foreign, hard currency behind the Iron Curtain.

The market would be military and police. Since it couldn't be sold in the US at the time due to restrictions on Warsaw Pact imports, the civilian market was not a prime concern.

The P-35 or Hi power was an attempt to get a pre WW II French military contract. One of the French contract conditions was magazine capacity. John Browning but mostly Dieudonn Saive went to work on the magazine and pistol. The French didn't pick up the contract though so the pistol went into commercial production. The CZ 75 couldn't be imported into the U.S. at the time (1975) and unless they came into the states thru U.S. service members serving in Europe or thru Canada they didn't come in. They were more than a little rare at the time. The hope was for sales in the CHICOM countries, China-Communist Asia-Africa and  Central and South America. Then the wall came down and CZ discovered the U.S.A.. After that there was no looking back.

I have a CZ 75, 75BD,  Sig 226 and 220 (9mm) and P6, a Beretta 92Fs and over a dozen S&W full size and Carry 9mms. None are close to the  CZ75 action. The CZs have far and away the best triggers and natural pointing feel of any of the others. I have a used SP-01Phantom on the way but I don't think the trigger unless I customize it will match the CZ75 pre B.
CZ75- CZBD- CZ Sp01Phantom- CZ 70- CZ 27- CZ 24
