CZ 85C hammer (main) spring qustions
« on: February 14, 2019, 04:28:37 PM »
Currently my stock 85C has an average SA pull of around 3 lbs 15 ounces.
Its a range gun and I only shoot SA. Therefore the DA is not important to me. The action is smooth and crisp so no complaints.

I wanted to start (experiment) with replacing the stock hammer spring with a 15 pound spring to see if it reduces the SA pull a bit.
I have read that the #15 spring is the only weight that does not require an extended firing pin etc..
Only CGW recommends simultaneously replacing the firing pin spring with a 'reduced power' spring to accommodate the #15 hammer spring. Other vendors have no such caveat.

I only shoot 115g and 124 g factory fmj ball ammo. No reloads.
Blazer, Am Eagle, Sellior Bellot, Freedom Muinitions.

I also use the Kadet 2 with good factory ammo. So, I don't want to compromise the Kadet function. I assume the Kadet firing pin spring is already 'reduced' compared to the 9mm FP factory set up.

Would I be needing the reduced 9mm FP spring?  Would a #15 hammer spring compromise the Kadet 2 ?

I don't want to get complicated right now with "mods".
The trigger pull is quite decent but if the #15 hammer spring can reduce it a bit, that seems like an easy step.

Thanks for opinions.

A 15 lb hammer spring 'might' compromise the Kadet function.

A 17 will be fine.

I believe stock is about 20. I might be incorrect in that belief.
I had the right to remain silent...

but not the ability.

I recently bought an Short Reset System kit from Cajun for my 75B SA.  I shoot it with a Kadet kit most of the
time, so the hammer spring they provided was a 15# (Gold) spring.  They told me that's the lightest they
recommend for the Kadet.  Haven't put it in yet though.

Thanks Painter and Canthelpit, yes the stock hammer spring is around 18 to 20 lbs. Most claim it is 20 Lbs.

So, the 17 might be a safe bet to include the Kadet.  Without the Kadet, the 15# was the min acceptable without the need of other changes.

I will try to ask on the kadet forum for some user experience.

Any other opinions welcome !

Since you said its a range gun go with 15 and try it out.  Better that A SD shoot everything, but if you are getting good primer indentations with your preferred ammo all is good.  Cajuns 3 spring kit and hardened fp retaing pin is worth the simple pin punch removal to get there IMO.  Ahhh, you have the non B version so no need for the FPB spring replacement.

I put the 15# spring in this morning.  I'll report back after I head to the range.

Update... I spoke to one of the gunsmiths at CGW today and he told me that the Kadet was made to operate with the factory hammer spring weight.

So I ordered the Race hammer kit, pins, misc.  and the sear spacer.

Thanks.

Gotta love the 85 Combat !

Did I misunderstand several previous threads/posts where people stated a lighter hammer spring is effective at reducing (some amount) the DA trigger pull, but doesn't have much effect on the SA trigger pull.

SA trigger pull is better addressed with hammers, lighter trigger return and firing pin block springs (if your pistol has a firing pin block) and some polishing/smoothing of the right internal surfaces.

Maybe I've misunderstood along the way.
I just keep wasting time and money on other brands trying to find/make one shoot like my P07 and P09.  What is wrong with me?

M1A4Me, yeas I think you got it right.
I also researched and found conflicting info but basically the lighter hammer spring alone and perhaps associated lighter firing pin and extended firing pin seems to help primarily the DA pull.

The SA is better addressed as you cited.
The CGW race hammer and adjustable sear kit alone will reduce SA creep and pull weight according to their gunsmith.

Add the other spring changes and polishing, the sum addresses either one or both even more so.

After reading some of these posts, I put the stock spring back in.  I've got a steels match in a week and can't
risk problems with light strikes.  Maybe later...

I can tell you from experience that the CGW race hammer (it's worth buying the adjustable sear, too, if your gun is a model with the thumb safety - Oh, 85 with no firing pin block, so you might have to buy the spacer, too.) will definitely give you a nice crisp trigger pull that will feel lighter than it measures out at.

We've installed two of them (CZ75 SA and a CZ75 Compact converted to SAO) and those hammers make a huge difference.

I have not used one from CZ Custom but folks who have say those are great hammers, too.

Well today I got all my ducks lined up and did another review and read to get the methods straight.
I disassembled the 85C enough for the hammer swap.
About 1 to 1.5 hours, slowly, taking notes, bagging and labeling parts, drawings and pictures.

Later in the afternoon after a break, I got the itch to continue.

I removed the disconnector (disco)  from the original hammer and then went ahead and installed the disco and new strut onto the new race hammer.

I was lucky to have found a small heavy vice I had bought and forgotten.
Perfect for presssing.

The strut pin went in after starting it by using the vice.

The disco pin was easier and I did the entire install with a punch and hammer.

I used a 40 pound steel dumbell standing on its flat end as a hard platform/bench.
Then I used a metal billet that had a hole on its face and on its side.
That was my flat platform for shimming and taping the hammer onto for the pin work... another 1 hour and a bit more..

Next is the sear cage, sear swap etc.
and polishing some parts then reassemble.

Thanks Cajun Gun Works for the nice parts. !! :)

update, done.  got insignificant to no SA creep and about 8 ounces off the SA pull, so far...need to test after some use...
UPDATE 3-23-19 after 100 rounds I retested SA pull and it looks like the  CGW hammer has reduced the trigger pull by around 1 lb. 7.3 oz. from pre-hammer base line.
