Tried 4 Different Rentals at the Range
« on: April 25, 2019, 10:06:18 PM »
I was out of town for the first part of the week at a training class.  The class got out early in the day and I was bored.  So I went to this town?s indoor shooting range and rented 4 different handguns to try them out.  I rented a Walter Q5 Match, A Canik TP9SFX, a CZ P-10, and an internally suppressed Maxim 9.  I bought 50 rounds and a separate target for each one - so I?d get a fair feeling for each one.  I was pleasantly surprised by the results. They do kind of look at you funny when you walk in with eyes and ears, then say you want 4 guns plus ammo. LOL

I absolutely hated the Maxim 9.  It Failed to eject many times, and the trigger was the absolute worst trigger I can ever remember trying to shoot with.  Then the fact that at 15 yds the sight was off by a good 8? didn?t help it much either.  It was quieter, but was really a crummy feeling weapon.  Granted - It?s a rental, and there is absolutely no telling what kind and how much abuse it?s had to endure.  No chance of me ever considering the purchase of one of these.

The Canik TP9SFX felt like it was just plain old worn out.  The trigger wasn?t nearly as crisp as even the bone stock TP9SA or SFs that I own.  The sights were off on this one too, but only like 4? at 15 yds. Again, the rental thing.  It did function flawlessly and was pretty accurate (repeatable) - even at 20 yds.  Fun gun.  I bet a ?new? one would be a fine range toy.  I?ll wait for my TSO for that position in my lineup.

The Walter Q5 Match shot very nice.  To me, it felt exactly the same as a S&W M&P with all the performance center work done.  I shot this gun quite well.  10, 15, 20 yds and the grouping never really opened up.  All 50 rounds within a 3? circle.  I could end up with one of these.

The CZ P-10 was the smallest and lightest weapon of the bunch, and the biggest surprise.  The trigger was crisp and reset good.  The factory stippling on the grip is pretty aggressive, but it?s not going to slip from your grasp anytime soon. The recoil impulse was pretty short and sharp, but it?s not like it was unexpected.  It?s a pretty light weapon. I pretty much shot identical groups with it as I did with the Walther, with one exception...  I kept shooting faster and faster.  It felt good and pretty darn natural to shoot fast, and it was still accurate.  I?m betting a little more trigger time with it would probably improve my shooting with it.  I?ll probably end up with one of these too. LOL

I know, it?s a sickness. Hahahahaha - or at least that?s what my wife says!

The P-10 is a gun that just suddenly grows on you. I carried nothing but hammer fired guns, swore I'd never use a striker fired...then I tried a P-10C. Now we have three.

I would like to shoot a P-07 and P-10 back to back to decide between the 2 of them.  The more I shoot my Springfield XD-E, the less I like it.  It would do the job in a defensive situation, but I know better is available and just as easy to conceal.

MadDuner:  I've shot them together at the range. Gotta say  the P10 felt better than many of the other strikers I tried, but I'm an old geezer and still partial to a hammer. My Brother in law, who's a longtime Glock fan, liked my P07 and really loved the P10. We both shot better groups with the CZs than with his 19, and he's had that quite a while.
I've tried the XD-E and wasn't too impressed with it either. After a CZ, the next comfortable pistol was an H&K P30, although it had a funky trigger.

I too am a hammer fan.  I want a DA/SA hammer fired gun for carry, even if I do have to spend money to make it better.  Old school I guess.  I am just not that comfortable with the idea of carrying striker concealed.  Going to be looking for a P-07 in FDE with Tritium sights....and sending Cajun some money for upgraded parts.

Hi MadDuner.  Setting some aside for those parts is never a bad idea, BUT !!! My P07 was rough out of box, improved with some polishing and break-in, and still has some room for improvement.  My Wife's ODG P07 not only came with tritium, but Has a trigger IMHO that is worthy of competition OOB !!!  I had planned on working on hers before receiving it, but will put some more time into mine instead. Since I'm in NJ and can't carry, I'll live without the parts until I relocate.
At 70, I've noticed a little downward creep sneaking in to my DA shots, but not enough to  give up my hammer yet (I'm not a fanatic). I may have made a CZ convert out of my Brother in Law though, cause he asked if I could show him how to convert the P07 to a safety model.
