FO front sight for 5.5mm rear P-01
« on: January 11, 2020, 09:30:01 AM »
Orderding a Dawson FO front sight that needs to match the 5.5mm factory. If I remember correctly CZ measures from the bottom to the top and Dawson measures only the exposed portion.

Once converted to inches, is the correct amount to subtract from the Dawson .065?

Pistol is a P-01 and rear sight is CZC short tactical if anyone knows the exact height needed. Per the above calculation around .150-.155?

How about contacting CGW, since they sell/list a Dawson P01 and showing them the rear model your looking at?

Or why do you want a Dawson, specifically, over a CZC fiber optic front, that they should be able to tell you which they sell that works with your rear choice?

CGW sells specific sights to match their rear sight. They get these from Dawson, so may as well go to the source.

The CZC sights are all .125 and too wide. Prefer a more narrow front sight, say .090 or .100

CGW, does sell one to match the 5.5 front sight thank you and I stand corrected. It's measuring from the base like CZ does and converted from 5.5 mm to .215".

https://cajungunworks.com/product/050-390-correct-oem-fo-front-sight/

If memory serves me correctly subtracting .065" from the overall height will give you the correct Dawson measurement or very close. In this case it would be .150"

Ordered and on the way from CGW.

The P01 would have a standard dovetail depth of 0.085.  The shadows and SP01 variants have a 0.060 deep dovetail.

https://dawsonprecision.com/sights/cz-sights/

This would translate to a 0.130 tall front sight post.   The oem height dawson sight that cgw sells is 0.125 tall.  Should work great.

Cheers,
Toby

The Dawson 050-390 FO front sight which is compatible with the factory rear sight is sold by Dawson and CGW:
https://dawsonprecision.com/dawson-precision-cz-75b-85-combat-fiber-optic-front-sights/  (choose 050-390)
https://cajungunworks.com/product/050-390-correct-oem-fo-front-sight/

CZZ front sights are not pre-drilled.

-Dawson measures their sights from the top of the slide in inches. (excluding the dovetail)
-CGW measures the entire height including the dovetail in inches
-CZC measures the entire height including the dovetail in MM.

This is ludicrous, and good to know. thanks. Do they all use the same dovetail? I guess that is about a dozen cans of worms based on the model maybe. I'm only familiar with the steel guns.

Well, a follow up to ordering the CGW .125 sight that is supposedly compatible for the P-01 and the CZC short tactical rear sight that's regulated for a 5.5 front sight. I can tell you that at least in my pistol it's too short. At 10 yards  it's printing about 2-2 1/2" high. I'm having to use a 6 o'clock hold and even then it's too high for a 1" orange dot.

I've checked my empty bags of previous sights ordered from Dawson for this pistol. I now remember that .150 was the ticket and shot POA at 10 yards. At the time I was using a factory rear regulated for a 5.5 front. The math may be correct for other pistols but not for this P-01. YMMV

I've had the same experience with ez drift cgw sight set.  It shot way high in my sp01.

I have since stopped buying sight sets and now put the rear sight I want on the gun first.   I then go out and shoot it with various weight bullets I intend on shooting and use the calculator to calculate the front sight height needed.  It takes longer and cost a few dollars more (shipping, etc...) but the gun will shoot poa every time.

Cheers,
Toby

That is an excellent recommendation tdogg. That way you get the rear sight you want and get the perfect height front sight on the first try. Gotta like the practical, common sense approach.........and you get more range time in the process!

There are two options from Dawson Precision. One is for the P-01 and the other is for the SP-01. Both will work fine, however there are some differences.

The P-01 version is slightly longer extending back towards the rear sight past the vertical dovetail. Additionally it has a set screw. The smallest width shown is .100.

The SP-01 version is shorter being more flush with the dovetail and creating a slightly longer sight radius. There is no set screw. There are also options for a .090 width.

Neither version requires the hole  to be drilled for the front sight pin.

Wound up with the SP-01 version .155T x .090W for my P-01. Really like this width that allows more daylight for precision shooting. Shot it for the first time yesterday and it's dead nuts on for a 1" circle at 10 yards.

As always your mileage may vary, but hope this information will be useful. I also admit to being anal about having a pistol that shoots to POA/POI.

We have .100 wide (2.75mm) sights. Have had for about 8 years.   https://czcustom.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=2.75+&cat=
