SB Tactical CZPDW brace
« on: May 27, 2019, 01:09:24 PM »
I bought this from an online company (which was a great experience) to complete my FDE K conversion as I waited for the factory Micro to be released. I received the unit and installed it. The brace itself rattles and does not fit tight into the mount. I contacted SB Tactical and sent a video and they said it was too much loose movement. I sent it to them and they sent a replacement. Same issue. So I researched and found a lot of buyers having the same complaint. I also found that the issue is the mount itself as the tunnels for the brace arms are a hair too big. This causes me to think that maybe this was the part of the factory Micro that delayed it's release.
So I contacted SBT again and they sent out a replacement brace with steel arms. Same issue. Then they sent me a mount to try and it turned out to be, what I believed, a T&E unit or a malfunctioned return as it was soooo loose on the gun even with the set screw tightened. It has what appears to be pitting on the bottom and was re-blued to cover up a scratch. And it still had the same issue anyway. I contacted them on 5-11-2019 and have not received a response. SB Tactical tried to correct it so I give credit for that. It doesn't appear to be their portion which is the brace, it is the Manticore Arms mount.
I have two thoughts. 1) why didn't SBT test the replacement product and parts before sending them to me knowing the issue? 2) SBT stated that this brace is the exact same as the factory Micro so how is there no looseness in my factory Micro's brace?

I would not recommend buying one of these braces until or if CZ-USA offers it. It is disappointing but I have an idea on correcting it.

I don't mind having to modify some things but when you're spending money with top name companies I expect the fit and finish to be top notch! This is not the first year production Scorpion, there's no reason these shouldn't be perfected by now. I hope you can modify it to get it to work but again, you shouldn't have to.

This is getting a little discouraging as it seems like a lot of aftermarket products (even some stock ones) are not well thought out for the Scorpion. As you said why didn't they test the products before they sent them back out to you? Also, what possessed Magpul to make a 2 piece grip, one that doesn't have a storage area and a terrible fit?

Who at CZ thought that charging handle was a good idea along with the right side safety selector? ??? I mean the first time you hold the gun you can feel it digging into your hand along with that knuckle grating charging handle. Now add in the horrible stock trigger and grip, for $800 ish these things should've been addressed by CZ a few years ago. I can build a AR-9 pistol with better components a lot cheaper and with a lifetime warranty. Don't get me wrong I like the Scorpion and it's a fun addition to my collection but I can't see myself adding any more to my collection like my AR's which are never ending.

With that said I'd like to thank HBI as all the parts I received from them were top notch! The charging handle and Theta shoe fit perfect and the trigger spring kit makes a world of difference for very little money. All the time they take to make their videos and even re-make the trigger spring install with the color coated parts. That really helps show what's going on and where everything goes.

I don't understand CZ's stubbornness on the scorpion's grip and safety either. But I am curious what issue you have with its charging handle. I guess it could be slightly bigger.

It's way to small so you're using more force to pull it back and charge it. The larger one make a huge difference, very little effort now. With the stock one you're constantly scraping your index finger and thumb against the side. It only took 2 pulls to realize this was going in the trash! ;D

I went with the ProStock handle rather than the extended one. For me I don't want the handle sticking way out and the ProStock works perfect.  Ymmv

Thanks for your reply. I will look in to the ProStock handle. I already ordered the HBI trigger spring and a grip, but I don't feel the small charging handle is that urgent for me, since pulling it is not something I have to do under stress.

I'm sure you've seen this video but in case you haven't this is the best, detailed video on installing the trigger spring kit. Have patience when installing that darn trigger spring as it's worthy of a few four letter words.  ;D

I got the PDW and the side folding brace and I actually prefer the PDW as the length of pull is a bit longer when fully extended and you can get your face a bit lower on it when shooting with a co witnessed setup.  Mine doesn't rattle when collapsed but when extended there is up and down play.  I put a 9mm o-ring just in front of the screw at the end of the rails but there is still play on the other side of the mount.  its definitely the mount holes but not bad enough for me to switch back to the side folder.  The worst thing about the PDW for me is that the Apex safety set dont work with it.  You cannot put the Evo in safe with the PDW brace collapsed when using the Apex safety.   That blows.

Thanks for the tip. I got the kit last Friday, and I installed it yesterday after watching the video a few times. The trigger return spring is a little difficult to install. One thing I red-necked is to use a sturdy shoebox as my replacement for the vise and jaws. I just pushed the trigger into the box and the whole assembly just stayed there during the installation. Since it only takes a few pounds to press the trigger return spring, the shoebox worked.

I was a little disappointed in the FDE Apex grip though. Its color does not match the scorpion's and it did not go in at first. I had to file it a little bit to put it on. I expect this from some knock-off from ebay, but not from Apex.

I dont know why color matching is so difficult for companies to figure out.  Mayne they just are taking FN approach and think that "in the ballpark" is good enough.  The SB tactical folding brace doesnt match either
