USPSA gear help - fat guy
« on: July 27, 2019, 01:25:03 PM »
Pretty self explanatory title. I'm looking at getting into USPSA production division with a CZ p09. I'd like to be able to order the holster and have it be usable with my current leather belt until I see what I like and can buy a "real" belt later. I'd like the holster to be something that pushes the grip away from my side since, well, muffin top exists. And same for magazine carriers. Hopefully I can find some options that are "off the shelf" so I can have them in hand by mid August when the next local match happens. Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Edit - I'd like to use Shooks Custom, as I already have an IWB and am very happy with it, but he's not currently taking orders + I have zero idea on the attachment options

Just use what you got until you are ready to get the belt with holster, holster hanger and pouches.

Go shoot that match and look at what the more experienced shooters are using.

Be sure that you have at least 5 mags to shoot Production.   (4 behind your hip bone and 5th mag in your gun)
A-1 Dinsintegrating Pistol
Illudium Q36 Explosive Space Modulator

BladeTech's drop/offset is okay for starting out.  Their Tek-Lok attachment is pretty solid and is easy to setup for multiple belts.  You're pretty much stuck with a vertical draw angle though unless you want 15 degrees of fore/aft cant.  I started with this setup on my CCW belt.

Once I switched to a double layer competition belt, I didn't need the outward angle due to the much stiffer nylon belt.  I ended up getting a RedHill Tactical holster on a BOSS hanger.

If it were my money, I'd get a RedHill Tactical holster with the Bladetech/BOSS/Springer/RHT mounting pattern and the BladeTech drop offset with Tek-Lok.  The RedHill holsters are double thick kydex and much more solid than even 0.80" thick single layer.  The holster will be compatible with most hangers if you upgrade in the future.

If worst comes to worst price wise (aware of size problems myself) 2 rigid belts added together work great if your size make it pricey.  IE may not be cheapest but idea Feebay one.

first pic for the look and second for the best price on Feebay

Why use 911 when it's faster to use 1911 or 9mm?

You’ve already been given some good ideas.

To meet your requirement of something you can attach to your existing belt (assume it’ll be threaded thru your belt loops) and your stature, I second the recommendation of a Bladetech kydex holster with their dropped-offset bracket and either the Sting-ray belt attachment or a Tek-lok.  You can either thread the belt thru the Sting-ray or clip it on with the Tek-lok.  Sting-ray will be more secure, but the Tek-loks are easier to take on and off.

Or bite the bullet and go with the BOSS hanger + kydex holster such as the Bladetech.  The BOSS allows you to adjust the height and offset(by using different length spacers).  The BOSS hanger is becoming pretty popular even if you opt to shoot a different division. I use the BOSS for 3 different divisions that I shoot (it’d be 4 if I needed a holster for PCC...).

USPSA changed their rules for offset in 2018, although for Prod division it’s only a 1/8” increase, for a total of 2 1/8” as measured from the inside of the belt to the gun.  There is an allowance the Range Master can grant due to “anatomical considerations” and the rulebook acknowledges not all competitors will be able to comply.  For Limited, L10, and Open you can go up to 3 3/8” offset.

For mag pouches, there are some that use a tek-lok or clip for easy-on/off, but most of those will not have any offset to move it away from your body.  The same 2 1/8” rule applies to mags.

As far as belt, the ones that you see most often at USPSA matches are the two-layer belts made by CR Speed or DAA.  The inner belt threads thru your belt loops and the outer (more stiff) belt attaches via velcro.  Your holster and mag pouches are attached to the outer.  I have both, and the DAA is probably stiffer than CR Speed.   When ordering, order 4” larger than you current pant size (I wear 34” pants and use a 38” belt).
