Jericho 941 450 SMC conversion
« on: August 13, 2019, 01:10:32 AM »
Hello, I'm new to the forum, but I have been creeping around for awhile. I've recently purchased a Jericho 941 in 45 ACP, I have intentions of putting down feral hogs with it, and feel like the 450 SMC would be my best bet to ensure a good clean kill at any angle I happen to find convenient. I'm sorry if this has been asked before, I tried the search function with no results. My question is what would be the best spring/buffer setup to minimize the wear to the Jericho 941? I am interested in the DMP recoil reduction system, but unsure of which springs I should upgrade them to ( if that's even possible.) To the best of my knowledge, the 941 was designed around the 41 AE which had a chamber pressure of 38500 which is somewhat comparable to the 10mm, so the 450 SMC (chamber pressure around 32000) shouldn't destroy the gun, right? If there's anything that you guys know of I could do to minimize recoil and damage to the frame I'd love you hear your opinions. Thanks!

Along the same lines, I converted my older .45 Witness to .45 Super with a Sprinco 10mm Witness Recoil Spring Guide Rod and an 18 lb Wolff Recoil Spring.
It worked well, but I've only put about 200 rounds through it. Also note, I used Starline .45 Super Brass.
Also note that I developed my conversion for discrete carry in Bear Country.
My Feral Hog Medicine of choice is a Rifle chambered in .30/06 with Federal 165 grain softpoints, FWIW.

.45 Super:  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.45_Super

From Wikipedia: The .450 SMC is a variant of the .45 Super with a smaller primer pocket, which can support higher pressure, and therefore velocity, because the case is stronger due to having more brass in the web area.

Thank you, this is the information I was looking for. Your 300.06 is undoubtedly a better option for hunting, I was mainly going to use this gun for hikes, or rides when taking a rifle wouldn't be convenient as grabbing a pistol. We've had a huge boom in the hog population recently and I just want to be as prepared as possible. Have you tried running any regular 45 acp through your setup? Any jams or failures? If not I'm thinking I could make a very useful truck gun for the trails, or quick trips to town with only a mag swap.

No to both.  I usually drop back to the old Guide Rod and a 16 lb Recoil Spring when shooting regular .45 ACP.

No problems at all feeding the Remington Surplus 185 grain JHP's that were loaded to .45 Super.
They have a very rounded profile.

Also, the 200 grain Berry's Flat Points I load for regular USPSA/IPSC Match loads feed very well.

One thing to note is that comparing chamber pressure does not give a complete picure of whether or not a cartridge will be safe.

The 450SMC, and .45 auto etc. Have relatively low chamber pressure because they have a relatively large internal case volume. While you can be confident the chamber itself can contain the pressure, you dont know if the slide will remain locked to the barrel when firing.

That is determined more by the rearward thrust from the case, which needs to be overcome by the mass of the slide and the pressure from the recoil and hammer springs long enough for chamber pressure to get back down to  around 0.
A decent proxy of rearward thrust is the raw energy of the round. 450 SMC will be 700-800 ftlbs which is double a .45 Auto or .40 or 9mm+P. Thats a big jump between what you are asking the gun to do and what it was designed and tested for.
On the other hand a Witness uses the same weight slide for 9mm-10mm, and my 10mm Witness does great with maxed out 10mm loads. I have a heavy Wolff recoil spring and a heavy hammer spring.

Just wanted to throw all that out there. Im not saying it wouldnt be safe, but at the very least I would also get a stronger hammer spring and inspect carefully for split case necks or case bulges and other pressure signs.
