Magazine spring life in rounds
« on: September 02, 2019, 04:16:37 PM »
I'm wondering how many rounds is the average life of the standard pistol magazine spring (15-17rounds)?
I have 4 magazines per gun, which I put into rotation, so I shot already about 600 rounds per mag.
I noticed that springs are significant weaker now, I can load magazine quickly not using any auto-loader, just with my thumbs. Not a big deal, even my wife can load them :) But springs work well - no jams or FTF.

Just wondering how long would it take to cause problems? 1000 rounds per mag, 2000 ????

I have mags that have fired 5000 rounds each and still function as new. I've had mags that started malfunctioning in less than 500 rounds.
The constant compression and decompression is what mainly weakens springs over time.I keep no less than 10 mags (usually more) on hand for every gun I own and dedicate a few of those for range use only.
One thing I learned early on was as with most things you get what you pay for.Quality mags are worth the money. The cheap stuff will prove that out in a hurry.

I have 10 mags for my CZ SP-01, but it seams like I am always using the same one, my number 5 (all my magazines are numbered).
I could safely say that #5 has at least 5000 rounds through it. Still going strong, and for what it's worth, I never keep them loaded. I manually load as I shoot, it gives me time to reflect on my last 15 shots while I reload my magazine for the next training round, and I always load 15 rounds in them, just a habit.

Wow! That's impressive. 5000 rounds per mag is a lot.
I bought 3 Wolf magazine springs packs for some of my handguns (just in case if I need to replace springs), now I see that I might never use them :)

I shoot 2000-3000 rounds in 9mm every year, but with more guns in rotation - each gun has lower stress now (and same goes to mags).
And my gun range has stupid law - no more than 10 rounds loaded (even if I bring 30 rounds mag), so the stress on spring is even lower.

Springs might go a long way, but the follower will eventually need to be replace.
Here are 2 with high counts. I think the notch is form during reloads.
