S&W 586 L-comp photos added
« on: August 21, 2015, 06:21:02 PM »
I have a chance to pick up a new S&W 586 L-comp in trade for a S&W 627 Pro. I haven't shot the 627 in several months, I prefer my Match Champion and 686+. I haven't tried a Smith Performance Center comp revolver before. Does anyone have any experience with this model? I have and shoot a 686+ with a 3 inch barrel and like it, just wondering if the comp is worthwhile.

From a value perspective, I think it's a good deal, assuming its in good shape. Like you I have a 686+ and a 627 pro ( that I shoot in USPSA) .  If I was offered the trade, I'd probably do it, as the L frame is my favorite S&W wheel gun. Besides, I always wanted one of the factory ported versions.

On the S&W forum, lots of positive feedback on the L, K and F comps.

I'm very happy with the L-Comp, accurate and super smooth in DA or SA mode. Shot 125 rounds of Magnum ammo and 100 of 38 Special. Best defense ammo so far is Black Hills 125gr 357 HP and Buffalo Bore 158gr LSWCHP +P 38Special. Was very happy with the accuracy from my hand loaded 180gr Keith style magnum loads, recoil was stout, as expected, but no worse than from a 4 inch GP100.

Going on a hog hunt Saturday night/Sunday morning. Taking my 7.62x39 CZ527 Carbine and the L-Comp. The revolver will be loaded with my 180gr Keith bullet load, haven't run them over chronograph from the L-Comp, but I get 1320fps out of my 6 inch GP100.

Good luck & give us a report on your hunt. I got a hog years ago using a Ruger Redhawk.

I know the thread is old but .... what did you think of the Banana grips. I have been looking for something for my 686 3" but cant decide between the boot grips, Retro Tactical or Banana by Ahrends.

I carry it often and am heavily leaning toward the Banana. I dont love finger grooves and I think I might miss a place to put my pinky if I went with the Boot grips. I am currently using the Hogue Rubber bantam which function great but I would like something nicer.

I tried the VZ but for some reason they didnt let me get my hand up high enough and I liked the look of the Altamont that came on the gun but they werent cut back far enough to allow use of a speedloader.

So .. the search continues.
