Like almost everything else, of course, your red dot or laser of choice, and whether to use one at all, is definitely a matter of personal preference.
For "home defense" purposes, I use a Viridian laser/light combination that is picatinny rail mounted. The benefit, in my opinion, is that target acquisition is generally quicker through a laser, because of course there is no sight alignment process, and you could begin firing from any imaginable position. The light I intended as a strobe for disorientation or just a light for generally being able to see in the dark. With either a laser or a light, obviously they both point back to your location as well when you employ them. You have to weigh what you feel to be most important. For my and my wife's operation in the worst case scenario, ie. awoken from sleep in the middle of the night, I went with the easiest and quickest method of target acquisition.
For a red dot, I use a Vortex Venom. I like their price point, and I like the size/MOA of the dot. I've had no issue with mine and have shot it in a variety of conditions.
I have used a crimson trace grip laser on a Glock before, and I definitely found it to be useful when you get used to it. The zeroing isn't terribly precise (in my experience), it's good enough for home/personal defense options.
