.357 Couger revolver
« on: November 09, 2019, 04:50:35 PM »
I had a Couger built a little while back, and figured our younger folks might never even have heard of these - a Colt Python barrel and Ruger frame = Couger. It all started when I saw a new 4" Python barrel for sale on eBay...

Background: This was a somewhat popular "thing" starting in the early 80s for police pistol competition - apparently the Colt Pythons were cleaning up in shoots, but 1) not everybody could afford them or even find them and 2) Pythons need specialized tune-ups to keep them in time. Enter Bill Davis from California who put these together - accurate and robust. Smolts (aka Smythons)  became popular, too - S&W frame, Python barrel.

Start:

Finish:

Range time:

The DA trigger is typical Ruger - the weight is all over the place during the pull - but SA is 4lbs exactly and almost perfectly crisp (I can feel a tiny *snick* feeling just before it fires, so I can actually "stage" it).

The barrel stays where it should and the revolver shoots tiny groups at 7 yards. Yep, I'm happy - good-to-go. I also bought the Dec 1979 Guns magazine (which first brought the Couger to the world), took photos and made a PDF of the article for historical purposes if anyone's interested:

I wanted a 4" Smolt. Never actually tried to follow through with it I just thought they looked really COOL! Haven't thought about these in years it's not like they use to give Python barrels away and badly removed barrels go for around $400 now. What a half way decent Python barrel goes for these day I dont want to know. Very nice Couger.
