Anyone loading 300WM?
« on: January 26, 2022, 05:38:35 PM »
I'm seeing that CZ makes a 550 and Ultimate Hunting Rifle that come in 300WM. Anyone here loading 300WM? Are you using a progressive or single-stage? I just picked up an R700 and have a Dillons 650XL. Unfortunately Dillons is backordered on 300WM dies.

I recommend going single stage for your 300 Win Mag.

What are you going to use it for??

What loads do have in mind??

I'm new to the caliber, and bolt action rifles/precision shooting in general. The firearm is an R700 on a McMillan A4 chassis - a beefed up M40A3 as used in the military. The idea for this build is tactical applications - a bug-out rifle that shoots great on paper at long distances. My time on the press making different loads will be an intimate experience in reloading, and ultimately I want to become a better handloader from it. I will also take it out hunting big game every few years.

I chose 300WM because it is flat shooting, and the minor advantages a .338 Lapua would offer are not advantageous to me, yet. I also am not currently in the market for an anti-material rifle (50BMG).

I opted for the A4 stock and not a lighter hunting stock because if the military can lug it around day in and day out, so can I. 2lbs vs 0.6lbs is negligible. I do like the idea of the heavier stock for recoil reduction, and the A4 has a beefy rubber butt. A similar concept is fiberglass and carbon fiber motorcycle helmets - the former is better at quieting wind buffeting, whereas the latter is less strain on the neck.

Depending on the game, you should be able to find a long range target load that works just as well on game.

For long range shooting, 1000yds,  I'd look at bullet weights starting in the 190gr or there about. A reasonably high ballistic coefficient is nice for those long shots.

My experience shooting game has been white-tailed deer up to about 300 pounds. Nosler ballistic tips and partitions were my choice, usually in the 150 to 165 gr weight..

I used alot of IMR 4350, IMR 4831 and H4831SC.

With heavy 190gr bullets...you may want to check out even slower burning powders like H1000 and RE25

The rifle I used the most was a Ruger #1 Medium Sporter, aslo used a Rem 700 Sendero.

I started loading for 300PRC last year. It is almost same as 300WM.
What questsions do you have? I run 7828SSC and N565 with 225 or 230 gn bullets. I've shot out to 600 with it, but 1k and more are planned next year.
SnipersHide might be better for topics.

I'm picking up 100 brass casings. I want something I can shoot targets with, I have access to a 1000yd range. I don't need anything match grade. Is there a powder that would work for both .308 and 300WM?

I'm thinking a powder for 308 and 300 win mag would be a stretch.
