Plans for my 457 Scout
« on: November 16, 2019, 11:17:48 AM »
Got a decent deal on a 457 Scout and though it is a "youth" model I bought it with some mods in mind.

My plans:
1 - Strip the Beechwood stock and stain it either "Dark Red Mahogany" or "Antique Cherry Red" both water based stains(you can use alcohol instead of water) that you mix up to your desired strength. I will test on some scrap wood to see which I prefer.

2 - Prior to staining, there are areas on the stock that need tweaked and detailed IMO. In what I consider a corner cutting attempt, only the RH side of the stock has a flute cut at the point of the comb (just lazy IMO). I will cut a flute on the LH side and detail the one on the RH side as well. I plan on moving the point of the comb back a bit just to have a more detailed and refined look.
The area behind the pistol grip is thick, clunky and has no detail at all. I will refine that area and plan on filing a line between the area where the grip meets the body of the buttstock (think of an older double barrel shotgun buttstock).

3 - I will add an Ebony grip cap and forend tip.

4 - I would like to checker the forend but fear that the beechwood would absorb the stain too much in the checkered area. I might inlet a slab of Ebony into the forend and checker that. Sounds interesting to me but would be a good bit of work...but I think it would look very sharp.

5 - I will fit a "red" 1" recoil pad...not for the recoil of a .22 of course but just to add an inch to the 12" LOP.

6 - I MIGHT make a "flash hider" to use in place of the threaded muzzel thread protector. I looked at those I could find on line but they all seemed to be too big of a diameter and would look "tacked on" IMO...so I might turn something on the lathe but the stock is my first concern.

7 - Fit an aperature sight (Skinner seems like it might be a possible).

I will document this project with still photos and my plan is start  a YouTube channel to document several firearms and metal working projects I have waiting in the wings. I'll see how that goes as it will be a new experience for me and one I would not want to be ashamed to upload. I have seen some horribly produced YouTube vids and I don't want to produce another ones of those...I would hope I could produce one that would not look too amateurish.

I am off work from early Dec. to the end of the year so that is when I plan to get started on this job...

I will post the stills and a link to the YouTube. I'm not promising the YouTube but the stills will be posted for sure...God willing !

Sounds like more work than it really is...except for the checkered forend Ebony inlay...that part may not happen.

Sounds good, I’ll look forward to what you come up with for this little guy.

My Scout is pretty basic for mods so far.
Scoped it so I pulled the iron sights and added a new bolt knob.
Mine actually has a decent looking stock so I’m ok in that regard but I’d also thought of making a spacer to help the LOP out a bit.

Congrats on your new Scout, I’m sure you’ll enjoy it.

That really does sound like a lot of work! Will keep watching for updates on progress. I recently purchased a 452 Scout and I really can’t say enough good about it, it’s perfect for a bolt action .22

Here’s a new GA article on your rifle

Thank you for that link ! I had searched for "CZ 457 Scout reviews" and did not come up with that one...it is the best and most thorough that I have read, most just parrot what is on CZ's web site.

Yes, I am really looking forward to jumping into this job but I do want to document it (and some others I have in mind) via both video and still photography. Currently I am researching lights and microphones to help me produce acceptable videos. I have an older Sony HandiCam that I know is not the greatest but lots of well done YouTube videos are done with only a cell phone. I have fooled around some and I think the HandiCam will be more than adequate. Lighting seems to be an art in itself, but like I said I am only after acceptable results not impeccably professional ones. Plus I do not want to spend a ton of money on lights and a mike...there are plenty of YT vids. that help in selecting those items.

One other thing I want to change on the Scout is that cocking indicator. Sorry but it just looks so cheesy to me. I know that plastic is a cost cutting measure for parts that do not require metal but I am old school and wish it was anodized aluminum. I do not know (or care to learn) how to anodize aluminum but I have worked extensively with sterling silver and I think I will replace the red plastic indicator with one made from silver. I know it won't show up as well as the red plastic but...I don't care!

9 Dec. is my last work day of this year so I should be able to start in earnest shortly after that date.

Thanks for the encouragement and link !

Update #1
So I started my vacation last Tuesday, my video lights were ordered 7 Dec., shipped last Monday the 9th and they have not arrived yet. I will not start working on the stock until I am able to document it via video. Lights are due to be delivered tomorrow by 8:00 PM.

11 days for Amazon to deliver a package is just about unheard of these days...It has delayed my job but I hope to start on the stock tomorrow. Assuming the lights arrive early enough.

2 things I found out about the Scout that you may already know but surprised me some.

1- The stock is pillar bedded from the factory, at least mine is.
I took  the rifle to the indoor range yesterday just to get a baseline of how it shot before I did anything. I didn't keep any targets or measure any groups but it grouped well albeit at 50'.
So this evening I removed the factory rear sight since I am going to use the Skinner aperature sight. I removed the stock so I could hold the barreled action in the vice, the stock screws were not very tight which surprised me a bit. Looking at the stock inletting I found, to my surprise, that the action rested on pillars.

2 - The factory rear sight screws are metric. I guess this shouldn't have surprised me but it did. I assumed they were 6-48 when they are actually 3.5x0.6. When I ordered my sight from Skinner I also ordered two plug screws to fill the factory holes. When the man on the phone asked me what size screws I needed I sorta hesitated and he said they were most likely 6-48. I agreed and that is what they sent...they don't fit.

Staining the stock, what I found out via research: Beechwood is not the easiest wood to stain. I have never been a stainer of wood, preferring the natural look of a quality hardwood vs a stained wood. However I WILL be staining this stock red-ish as I mentioned in my original post. I purchased the aniline dyes and further research suggested using the aniline dye followed by a thin sealing coat of #1 cut of shellac follow that with a Gel wiping stain.
I have shellac flakes and alcohol to make the #1 cut, I purchased the gel stain. So I'm ready to take the plunge. My concern is getting below the factory "walnut" stain. I will be rasping/filing below much of it but the areas that I will only be sanding give me some concern. I hope sanding alone in those areas will take me below the factory stain so my red stain will be even without any walnut stain darkening some areas up.

I will most likely not do the Ebony inlay for the forend checkering but will do the Ebony forend tip and grip cap.

I did read that though Beechwood is difficult to stain that it is easy to Ebonize (make it black w/o using stain or paint). I have ebonized oak before (using vinegar in which you put nails in and let it eat away at the nails for a few days, wipe that on oak and it gets black but the grain still shows through nicely...that is "ebonizing"). I don't want to do that to this stock. That would look too tactical IMO and would be stupid to do when using Ebony forend tip and grip cap... Plans may change but I hope not!

Look for still photos to be posted late this week and Lord knows when I will have a Video edited to my satisfaction that I am comfortable posting on YouTube...The video creation/editing will be the hardest part of this job.

2nd Update:
STILL waiting on FedEx delivery of my video lights. Just got off a 50+ minute phone call...mostly on hold...I'm not even going there.

Anyway I did get the sterling silver cocking indicator made and just finished the flash hider today. Photos attached.

I hope to start the wood work next week...

Forgive the GIANT images (Right Click and pick "view image")

The sterling silver cocking indicator:

The Flash Hider:

The disassembled bolt with both indicators:

The cocking indicator is only sterling silver on the thin part, the thicker part is steel.

The Flash hider is aluminum and currently only painted. I hope some day to have either an anodizing set-up or more likely a small powder coating set-up.

Wood still next week...well maybe the week after.

Happy Holiday to all and may there be a CZ under your tree !!

Nice project and write up - any chance you could size your pictures so they fit on the page without scrolling? Thanks
