When did CZ 75's start being used for competition?
« on: December 01, 2019, 11:17:57 AM »
Lately CZ seems to be the big choice for competitors' pistols, especially with the Shadow 2 and Accu-shadow models. But like everything, things have to start out small. Were there some high level competitors that used CZ 75 variants to win championships? I remember hearing that Angus Hobdell and Adam Tyc used SP-01's to win championships back in 2005, but that is all I can think of.

Shooting competitions have been going n internationally for quite a bit longer than domestically.  I don’t know exactly how long but CZ has several championships in IPSC which I believe is the more predominant competition in other countries. CZ is really flexing their competition models n the US and CZ is used by probably 50% of people shooting majors in production division.  The 2011 is the most popular model in the US in the most popular divisions though, CZ making a huge move in limited next year with the Dan Wesson DWX

There was a USPSA newsletter last year that showed what gear/equipment was used in the nationals. It was mostly CZs and 1911s. Also ammo was a lot of Precision Delta. It was really cool with pie charts and graphs etc... I do like being different, but there's advantages to riding the same bus.
When I decided to try racegunning, I did some research and knew nothing about CZ, that really opened my eyes..

The competition shooting market has always been a niche but profitable (high yield) market. We're now seeing increasing numbers of major manufactures producing competition-ready pistols for different  IPSC/USPSA divisions (and IDPA in the US).

Interestingly, I do recall Tanfoglio already being well-represented in that market segment back in the days before anyone really saw that many CZs.

According to Wikipedia (take it for what its worth), the first CZUB team was started in 1992. Although it seems CZ really got serious starting in 1998 (with the ST), then 2005 (with the TS, and SP-01), and later 2009 (the Czechmate). Of course this would lead to the SP-01 Shadow and then the Shadow 2.

Given the relative popularity of Tanfos in ISPC (especially in Europe) at the time, it's not surprising that CZ (a larger company with more resources who actually designed the platform) would want a piece of that market as well.

I have been shooting the SP01 Shadow in USPSA and IDPA from 2009 until 2015 (then kids happened). In 2010 I would typically find one other person shooting a CZ at the local club (matches are @80-120 people, 30-40 in Production) and maybe a few more Shadows at Area Events. When I took my sabbatical in 2015 there were maybe 25% shooting Shadows. No clue how popular they are now. I'm hoping to find out in 2021 when the kids are a little older and the cancer gets kicked the f%ck out. These Shadow 2's I have in the safe need used.

I remember working a match back in 2010 and a pit-mate was chatting it up about a gun he tried. Something about a CZ Shadow. He said he wasn't a trigger snob but once he tried that gun he realized he had to have it.

I had never looked at a CZ. The playing field was dominated with Glock, M&P and your occasional Sig with a broken firing pin, maybe some Springfield XD's. No one used CZ.

Things have certainly changed in 10 years.
