Irons plus red dot for P-07, P-09 (nearsighted)
« on: December 24, 2019, 07:53:09 AM »
Back when Vinny was inspiring us all with his in depth red dot posts, I had my P-01 carry gun's slide milled for a Shield dot and had disastrous results (machine work and TWO defective dots). Just gave up and sold the gun cheap at a pawn shop.  Money down the drain.

Two years later the eyes aren't any better, and I'm getting tired of competing with my PCCs.  Plus, my pistol collection of CZs and .45s were just collecting dust as I began to tire of shooting inside 10 yards for anything close to a satisfying experience.

During a recent Steel Challenge match, one of the competitors had a P-09 with a dot (and I don't remember which one) and let me give it a go.  I took my time on the stage and found I could find the dot and shoot accurately even at the furthest targets, just not quickly since I was low on the learning curve.  Inspired, I sent my SP-01 Tactical slide to Primary Machine for a Holosun 507c cut (I think they use the Trijicon pattern) and am waiting to get that back.  I'm sure it will be a couple of more weeks. Note I didn't opt for a back up site, and can't remember if it was an option.

Here's the question: is it even worth considering the back up sight cuts if my aging eyes can't see them in the first place?  Beyond 10 yards my dual fiber optic P-01 is useless even outside with lots of light.  Inside 10 yards I'm fine. So for defensive in the house scenarios, I can get by with my house guns and irons (my bedside gun has a laser that's sighted in for 10 yards too).

But this is about competitive distances out to 25 yards. I'm going to get either my P-09 or my P-07 cut for a back up competition gun after I get fluent with the SP-01, but I'm curious what other nearsighted folks that shoot with their distance glasses think..

Sounds like this is primarily a range/comp. pistol? If so, I'd leave the irons off, especially with aging eyes. You'll find the experience much more enjoyable without the clutter of irons.

Yeah, range only for the SP-01 Tactical and probably the P-09 which I'll send to PA once I get the Tactical slide back.

As for the two home defense/carry guns (P-01, P-07), I'm not sure if the value is there.  Interestingly, I've seen new courses pop up for defensive pistols with RDSs

I agree, for a competition gun back up iron sites (BUIS) is not needed nor desired.  For EDC/HD use, my sample size of one has them.

You'll be surprised at what you can hit with the dot turned off and w/o a rear sight, just looking through the glass. I'm not saying you'll be shooting golf balls at 25yds, but for self defense distance it's workable.
I didn't install iron sights on my P-10c even though I had it milled for them. Originally my intent was to train without using them, rely on the dot and add the BUIS later. Over a year later and I haven't bothered.

For my competition guns, I removed all the iron sights. They’re just distractions. After so much practice, you’ll be surprised to find your index even without the dot turned on.
