Sight Question #1,245,987

I'm sure thru the history of the forum there has to be at least that many questions on replacement sights.  And I've probably read nearly all of the recent ones. What I haven't seen is a question about the roll pins in the aftermarket sights. Well, yeah, questions about the pin, but not these: How many of the aftermarket sights have a hole for the front sight roll pin? Which ones are they? And is the pin really needed?

I ask because the Meps on CGW specifically say they do not have a cut out for the pin. And I don't see a cutout on the Trijicon Bright and Tough. The only set I can actually see a cutout for the roll pin is on the Dawson sets. Can't tell on the TruGlo Pro or Tritium Pro, as they mostly show the G*lock versions.

The TFX Pros have the cutout for the roll pin.

Thanks! That's encouraging. I don't know why I didn't see the notch before. After reading your post I went to Amz and checked them out - closer. Sure enough, there's the cutout. And I can see the cutout on the Tritium Pro, which is what I was leaning towards.

Meprolight I bought from CGW didn't have cutout. I spoke with tech (I didn't remember name, it might be Dave) and he clearly explained that there was no cutout because it was easy to make one during installation and that way this could be done precisely.
BTW - installation was easy (actually done by gunsmith for me but I saw the whole process) and pin sit tight, exactly where it should be after making cutout.

I read something like that on the CGW site about their Meps not having the cutout. In fact, it says "DO NOT use a drill bit to cut the front sight retention pin groove." Hmm, how are they doing the groove thang, then, if not drilling it out? Might call them on Monday and see what they say. Really, seems a toss up between the Meps 17775 and the TruGlo Tritium Pro (not TFX). And the TGs show a pin groove. Uh, does that make them groovier than the Meprolights?

Yes, most definitely the pin is needed. If you leave it out you will lose your front sight and barrel bushing while shooting. The bushing has a slot that the pin fits to hold it in place. Ask me how I know.

"DO NOT use a drill bit to cut the front sight retention pin groove." That means you can scratch the slide. When I spoke with CGW, their guy told me to insert sight, mark the point you need groove, remove the sight and make cutout with the file. It made sense for me.. however I asked my gunsmith to do this. Imagine what... he slid sight into the slide, took small drill  and made the hole for pin  . All was tight and perfect ! No scratches on the firearm.

I used ML17775 Front Sight only, leaving factory rear sight. Total cost $58 with installation
